The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here with the imperial rundown. Honestly, for the next 16 days at Wamberal Beach, you’re gonna have to grind through some rough patches, but there’s one golden window. Water temp is about average for the season, so nothing crazy.
Starting Thursday 16 July, it’s a mess. Solid 7ft swell from the south, but it’s short-period at 8 seconds and the wind is cross-off from the SSW at 30 km/h. Combined energy is moderate (599) but the surf is marginal. Thursday arvo gets worse: 8ft from the SSE, cross-on wind, poor conditions (637 energy). Friday 17 and Saturday 18 are small—under 4ft—with onshore winds. Sunday 19 July picks up to 6ft from the east with an 11-second period, but the wind stays cross-on from the SE, keeping it rough. Energy is strong (875) but it’s not clean.
Here’s your standout: Monday 20 July morning. Swell drops to 5ft from the east, still a 10-second period, but the wind turns offshore from the southwest at just 5 km/h. Glassy, clean conditions and the forecast is “very good surf.” Energy is moderate (570). That’s the session for beginners and intermediates—the 5ft is fun, not too heavy. Monday morning is the pick.
Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 July mornings offer small clean waves around 3–4ft with light offshore winds, but nothing to write home about.
From Thursday 23 July onward, it gets skinny. Waves drop under 3ft most days, with periods around 8–9 seconds. Energy gets weak, down to 47–147. There are some glassy moments—like Friday 24 July afternoon with 2ft and glassy, and Monday 27 July afternoon—but it’s tiny. Even a long-period 17-second groundswell on Tuesday 28 July morning only gives 1ft waves. The last few days are blown out by strong winds and small, poor surf.
So bottom line: the first week is rough, but Monday 20 July morning is your clear winner. After that, don’t expect much for over a week. Keep checking the forecast, but Monday is the day.
Rusty.
