Alright, groms, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming at Wamberal Beach over the next couple of weeks. This spot is wide open to the ocean, so it grabs everything, but sometimes that's a bit too much of a good thing.
First up, a big southerly pulse hits on Sunday morning, July 5th. We're talking a solid 10-foot south swell with an 11-second period. That's a massive 2304 on the energy scale. The water's at 67°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year. Wind is a clean cross-off from the SSW at 19 mph. That sounds perfect, but 10-foot surf at Wamberal is for experts only—way too big for beginners. If you've got the skills, Sunday morning is the biggest highlight of this first stretch, but it's a proper handful.
That big swell sticks around through Monday and Tuesday, still 8 to 12 feet, with cross-shore winds and some rain. Energy readings stay huge, over 3000 on Tuesday morning. But the wind isn't as clean, so it'll be a fight. Wednesday and Thursday, July 8th and 9th, the swell backs off to 7 to 8 feet, and the wind gets lighter and cleaner. Thursday morning, July 9th, is the real sweet spot: a 7-foot south-east swell, with a light 6 mph cross-off breeze from the SW. The energy is 780, and the conditions are looking "very good." That’s your best bet for the average surfer without getting smashed.
After that, it fades fast. Friday and Saturday (July 10th and 11th) drop to 5 feet and then 4 feet, still okay. By Sunday the 12th, we're down to 3 feet and smaller—a real lull. There's a big gap from Sunday the 12th through Tuesday the 14th with almost nothing; waves of 1 foot or less. Dead flat.
Then the ocean wakes up again. Wednesday the 15th, a new short-period south swell bumps up to 5 feet, with clean offshore winds at 16 mph. Solid, but the real monster comes back on Thursday the 16th. We're looking at a 15-foot south swell with an 11-second period and light wind. Energy reading: 4181. And it gets bigger: Friday the 17th shows a 20-foot south swell, with a 12-second period and light NW wind. That's a staggering 16465 for the energy. This is massive, powerful, long-period groundswell. At a beach break like Wamberal, that long period can make it close out a bit, but for the pros, it's a dream. Way too big for anyone but the absolute heavyweights, and the wind holds clean through to Saturday the 18th with 10 to 12-foot sets. Then by Sunday the 19th, it finally drops back to a manageable 6 feet with light winds, giving the regular crew another clean, smaller window.
So, to cap it off: Thursday morning, July 9th, is the pick for most of you. The huge, expert-only swell from July 16th to 18th is the real standout for the chargers. Expect crowds at Wamberal when it's on. Rusty out.
