The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the same forecast in feet and miles per hour.
It’s been a slow start, but there’s some good windows comin’. The first few days are a bit of a write-off with small, messy surf, but from Monday the 20th we start to see some life. The real standout is shaping up for the end of the month, but let’s take it day by day.
Sunday the 19th is a washout. The wind is onshore from the SE at 9 mph, making it choppy and bumpy, with a 7 ft E swell but it’s just not clean. Wave energy is moderate (1037). Best to leave the board in the car.
Monday the 20th morning is where it starts to get interesting. The wind drops right out, goin’ glassy from the SW at only 3 mph. That’s a major positive. The swell is 6 ft from the E with a period of 11 seconds, and the energy is moderate (832). That’s clean surf, perfect for a beginner session at Wamberal Beach. The water temp is about average for the time of year at 65°F, no drama there. Monday afternoon the wind shifts and puts a bit of a cross-on ripple on it, so get out early.
Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd are small and weak. Swell drops to 4 ft and 3 ft, and the wind is either cross or cross-off, so the waves are there but ordinary. Not worth rushin’ for.
Thursday the 23rd is tiny with a 2 ft swell, but the wind is offshore from the W at 12 mph, so it’s clean. Not much to work with though.
Now, Friday the 24th is a nice little session. The wind is offshore from the W at 9 mph in the morning, then goes glassy in the afternoon. Swell is 5 ft from the S, period 9 seconds, and the energy is moderate (400). It’s a good, clean, fun day for the beginner crowd.
Saturday the 25th is even better. The wind is offshore from the W at 16 mph in the afternoon, and the swell is 4 ft from the S but with a longer period of 13 seconds, giving it more push. The combined energy is moderate (569). That’s a very good session on offer – clean, lined up waves.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th keep the good run goin’. The wind stays offshore, and the swell hangs around 5 ft to 7 ft from the S. Monday gets a bit of a fresh breeze though, so it’s not as clean but still surfable.
Now, here’s the big one. Tuesday the 28th of July is the standout. The morning is firing. The wind is offshore from the WSW at 6 mph, and the swell is a solid 8 ft from the S with a period of 13 seconds. The combined wave energy jumps right up to 2676 – that’s strong energy. The conditions are listed as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the one to circle. The crowd at Wamberal Beach can be there sometimes, so get there early. The swell direction (S) is a good match for the optimum (SE). This is your best shot at a proper session.
The afternoon of the 28th gets a bit wild. The swell jumps to 12 ft from the SSE with a very long period of 16 seconds, and the energy is massive at 6155. That’s too big for this break, and it’s onshore wind. That’s for the experts only, and even then, it’s a big call.
Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are still solid. The swell is 8 ft and 5 ft, with the wind staying cross-off or offshore. Thursday the 30th afternoon is glassy again, which is a treat.
The first week of August sees the swell ease back, but there’s still some fun stuff. Saturday the 1st of August is a bit messy with some rain showers, but the swell is still 7 ft from the SSE. Sunday the 2nd is smaller and clean with offshore wind.
Then, Monday the 3rd of August is another big one. The morning has offshore wind from the WSW at 3 mph, with a 7 ft SSE swell and a long period of 13 seconds. The energy is strong again at 2036. That’s excellent for experienced surfers. That’s the second real standout, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on the charts.
Bottom line: If you’re a beginner, Monday the 20th and Friday the 24th are your windows. For the experienced crew, Tuesday the 28th of July is the session to aim for, and Monday the 3rd of August is the promising long-range call.
Stay keen, and keep your wetsuit zipped.
