The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here, looking over the next two weeks at Centreville Beach. It's a tough stretch ahead, gotta be honest with you. For a spot that's exposed to the south-west, the wind is just relentless, stuck in an onshore or cross-onshore groove for the vast majority of the period. The waves that do show up are gonna be chopped up and messy. There's a couple of moments that catch the eye, but patience is the name of the game.

Let's start with the here and now. This Saturday (August 22) and Sunday are basically a write-off. We're looking at tiny 2 ft to 2 ft SSW swells with a long period of 13 to 19 seconds, but it's all being ruined by a solid cross-onshore breeze. Combined energy is struggling into the 100s to mid 400s (138 to 444), which is weak to moderate, but the quality is just "poor." Not worth paddling out.

Monday morning (August 24) things get a little more interesting, but it's still not a standout. We see a pulse of NW swell hitting 5 ft, but the period is a short 8 seconds and the wind is a messy cross-shore. The combined energy bumps to 678, which is moderate, but the wave comment says "marginal surf forecast." It's a maybe, but I wouldn't plan your day around it.

The rest of that week and into the next is a real grind. From Tuesday (August 25) all the way through to Tuesday (September 1), the forecast is dominated by those persistent northerly winds staying cross-onshore. Swells hover around 2 ft to 4 ft from the S/SW, with periods between 16 and 20 seconds. The energy picks up a bit, with values in the 300s to 700s, but every single slot is flagged as "poor surf conditions." It’s just one of those runs.

Now, looking way out at the start of September, there’s a couple of bumps in the swell that might be worth a look for the truly keen and experienced. On Wednesday morning (September 2) and again on Friday morning (September 4), the swell jumps up. We get a 6 ft NW swell on the 2nd and a big 12 ft NW swell on the 4th. That Friday morning number is a beast, with combined energy hitting 2271 – that’s strong to very strong energy. But here's the kicker: both of these pulses are coming from the NW with a short period of 9-10 seconds, and the cross-onshore wind is still forecast to be blowing 12-15 mph. The wave comment for these is still "poor surf conditions." The swell is there, but the wind is going to tear it to pieces. At 12 ft, that's strictly for experts only, and even then, it's going to be a bumpy, challenging mess. Honestly, with that onshore wind and short-period chunk, this setup looks more like a day for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.

The water temperature at Centreville Beach is about average for this time of year, so a spring suit is all you'll need, but the conditions just aren't cooperating.

To sum it up: there is not one single standout session in this whole 16-day window. The best you can hope for is a marginal look on Monday morning (August 24) or maybe one of those NW pulses in early September if you’re a glutton for punishment and a strong paddler. Every other day is dominated by onshore choppy winds and poor-quality surf.

Rusty.
