The Lowdown

Right, grab a coffee, sit down. Rusty here. This is a tough one to call for Centreville Beach. Looking at the whole 16-day window from 23rd August through to 7th September, the honest truth is there are no good surf options on offer. The wind is a constant problem. It’s almost always from the north, which is cross-onshore for this exposed beach, and that’s going to ruin any chance of clean waves. The combined swell energy is all over the place, but the surf quality is consistently rated as poor. It’s a blank run, I’m afraid.

The first few days, starting Sunday 23rd, we’ve got a long-period 19-second groundswell from the SW, but it’s only 2 ft with a weak 281 energy. That’s a total non-starter with that 12 mph cross-on wind. Monday 24th looks a little better on paper with a 2 ft, 18-second SW swell and energy around 600, but it’s still cross-shore and only marginal at best. The best of a bad bunch might be Tuesday morning 25th, with a light 6 mph wind and a 2 ft swell. But even then, it’s still cross-onshore, so you’re looking at small wind ripples. Not worth getting wet for.

The whole first week is a write-off with that persistent northerly wind. There’s a small bump in swell size on 28th and 29th, with 5 ft and 4 ft, but the wind is 12 mph straight onshore, making it choppy and messy.

As we move into the second week, the swell gets bigger, but the wind gets worse. On Monday 1st September, we see a 5 ft NW swell, but it’s crossed-up by 12 mph north wind. Then on Wednesday 2nd September, we get a 6 ft, 9-second NW swell with moderate energy (827), but again, it’s a 12 mph cross-on wind. It’s just not a paddle-surfing scenario. With that kind of wind and a beach setup, it’s looking more interesting for kite surfing than a traditional surf. By Thursday 3rd September, the swell is 7 ft, but the wind is 16 mph from the north, making it a lumpy, dangerous mess. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s not good.

The last few days of the forecast, 4th to 7th September, see the swell drop back to 2 ft to 3 ft, but the wind is relentless from the north-west at 16 to 19 mph. It’s a long stretch of nothing.

So, to sum it up, there’s nothing to recommend here. The wind is against us for the entire 16 days. It’s a real shame, but it’s a normal blank run for an exposed beach like this when the wind locks in from the north. Keep an eye on the forecasts, as they can change, but for now, I’d leave the boards in the garage.

Rusty.
