The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Centreville Beach. We’ve got a 16-day window here, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for any kind of decent surf. The water is sitting at 55°F and that’s a bit colder than what we usually get for this time of year, so you’ll want a good wetsuit.
The first real chance of anything even worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Thursday afternoon, the 20th of August. We’ve got a small 3ft SSW swell sneaking in with a 14-second period, so there’s a bit of energy in the water (518). The wind is light from the NNW, which is offshore for this spot, so it’ll be clean. But honestly, it’s marginal at best – the kind of day you go for a paddle, not a proper session.
Friday the 21st looks similar, with a bit of swell in the morning (2ft SW, 14s) and clean conditions, but again, it’s barely a ripple. The rest of the forecast is a write-off. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the start of September, we’ve got a solid stretch of poor surf. The wind swings cross-onshore and picks up, turning the surface into a mess. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3ft, and the period drops off. Not much to get excited about there.
Then, out of the blue, we get a glimmer right at the end. On the 4th of September, a Friday morning, there’s a 7ft WNW swell rolling in. That’s a solid size, and the combined energy jumps right up to 1861 – that’s some proper grunt. The wind is light from the NNW, so it’ll be offshore and clean. But at 7ft, this is getting into expert-only territory. It’s still a long way out, so we can’t lock it in, but it’s the only thing on the whole forecast that looks like it’ll actually break proper. The afternoon that day sees the swell drop a bit, but there’s a long-period SSW swell (18s, 1609 energy) that could offer some clean lines if the wind holds.
Bottom line: we’ve got almost two weeks of flat, choppy, and unfriendly conditions. The only standout is that Friday morning, 4th September, for the big boys. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
