Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for Centreville Beach.
Straight up, this forecast is a tough one. There’s a lot of days where the wind is just ruining what swell there is, leaving it choppy and messy. The water is currently much colder than normal for this time of year at 51°F, which is a shock to the system, about 4°F colder than usual, so you’ll want a thick suit right now.
The first real flicker of something decent doesn’t arrive until Monday the 15th, and even that’s a stretch. The standouts are looking like a brief window on Sunday the 19th. The whole period before that is a write-off for any quality waves, with almost all morning and afternoon sessions getting a “poor” call.
Through the first week, from Saturday the 4th right through to Saturday the 11th, forget it. The swell is there at times – around 5ft to 7ft from the NW – but the wind is either a moderate cross-onshore or just onshore, creating choppy, poor surf. A couple of afternoons on the 6th and 7th get a “marginal” tag, meaning it’s rough but maybe worth a look if you’re desperate, but I wouldn’t get excited. The combined wave energy even hits a very large 1126 on Monday the 6th afternoon, but the 12 mph cross-onshore wind means that power is all wasted as messy, blown-out lumps.
The middle of the week sees some long-period energy. On Tuesday the 16th morning, there’s a 3ft groundswell from the WNW with a period of 19 seconds. That’s a very long period, which could hold some shape, but the 9 mph offshore wind from the NW is a real positive here, so the break might be cleaner than most this run. Still, it’s only a 1 out of 10, so don’t expect a classic.
Now, here’s the one that got my attention. The real, and I mean *only*, highlight is Sunday morning the 19th. The wind drops right out – glassy conditions with a slight air from the NNW at just 3 mph. That’s a major positive. You’ll get clean, smooth faces. The swell is small, 3ft from the WNW with a 15 second period, and the combined energy is moderate at 415, but with glass, you can make the most of it. It’s a true standout for the whole outlook. It’s still a fairly inconsistent break by nature, and crowds are possible here, so get down early if you want a piece. The optimum swell is from the SW, so this WNW isn’t perfect direction, but with that wind, it’ll be the best we get.
After that glassy morning, the wind picks up a little in the afternoon on the 19th to a light cross-onshore, which kills the quality again.
To be honest, if you’re looking at the bigger, choppier days around the 5th and 6th with that 6ft to 7ft NW swell and strong cross-wind over a beach break, you might be better off rigging up a kite than paddling. It’s just not a nice paddle-sesh.
So, in short: wait for Sunday the 19th morning. That’s your one shot at something clean. The rest is a long, frustrating wait.
Rusty.
