The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got a honest look at what’s coming our way for Centreville Beach over the next couple of weeks. Let’s get straight into it.

Right off the bat, I gotta tell ya, the first week is a tough one. We’re looking at a real dry spell here. From Tuesday the 18th all the way through to the morning of Saturday the 22nd, there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, mostly knee-high stuff around 1 ft to 3 ft, and the wind is stuck in that annoying cross-on position from the NNW or N at 9 to 12 mph. It’s choppy, messy, and honestly a bit depressing for a surfer. The combined energy is mostly moderate but the quality just isn’t there.

Then, on the morning of Sunday the 23rd, we finally see a pulse of energy. Swell jumps up to 7 ft from the NW, but the period is only 8 seconds – short period, windswell stuff. Wind is light and onshore from the NW at 6 mph, which is better than what we’ve had, but it’s still a bit raw. The combined energy is moderate (841). It’s still labelled as a marginal day, so don’t get your hopes too high. It’s the best we’ve seen, but it’s not classic.

After that, it drops right back down into the doldrums. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th offer tiny 2 ft swell from the SW with longer periods around 16-18 seconds. That’s more like a groundswell, but the size is way too small to do much with. Wind is light though, sometimes onshore or light cross-on, so if you’re desperate, you might find a tiny clean ripple. The afternoon of the 24th has combined energy of 550 (moderate), and the afternoon of the 25th hits 569 (moderate), so there’s some grunt in the water, just no height to ride.

The best option, and I mean the only real stand-out in the whole 16-day window, is the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. Swell hits 7 ft from the NW, period 8 seconds – again, short period, but the size will get your heart going. Combined energy is strong at 809. Wind is a gentle 9 mph from the N, but it’s cross-on, so expect some chop. This size is edging into expert territory (over 8 ft is for the pros, so 7 ft is a solid step up). It’s still a marginal call, but it’s the biggest, gruntiest day we’ve got.

Through the end of the month and into the start of September, it’s more of the same – small, messy, and inconsistent. The morning of Sunday the 30th of August has 6 ft from the NW with light cross-on winds, combined energy of 780 (moderate to strong), but still short period (7 seconds) and marginal quality. The 2nd of September morning has a tiny 2 ft SW swell with a very long period of 17 seconds, but it’s not enough to surf.

For what it’s worth, the water temperature is sitting at 55°F, which is about 3°F colder than normal for this time of year. It’s a bit nippier than usual, so bring the 5/4.

Overall, for the next 16 days, don’t hold your breath. The morning of the 27th is your best shot, but even that’s a gamble with the cross-on wind and short period. The rest is a write-off. Let’s hope the long-range charts change their tune.

Rusty.
