The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Camel Rock has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water’s sitting at a pretty typical temperature for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
Right now, we’re looking at a bit of a slow start. The surf on offer is pretty weak and the conditions are a bit messy. Saturday the 18th has a tiny 3ft swell from the WNW, but that’s a long-period groundswell (16 seconds) with a cross-on breeze. The combined energy is moderate (587), but it’s really just a marginal wave. Not worth getting excited about.
Sunday the 19th shows a bit more size, 6ft from the NW, but the period drops right off to 8 seconds and the wind is onshore or cross-on. The energy picks up a bit (759 to 848), but the quality is poor. Monday the 20th is similar with 5ft to 6ft and cross-shore or cross-on wind. All of it is marginal at best.
Now, here’s a little bright spot. Tuesday the 21st morning. The swell drops to 2ft from the SW, but it’s a 16-second groundswell and the wind goes glassy. That’s clean. The energy is moderate (466) and the conditions are rated as good. It’s small, but it’ll be the most fun you’ll have all week. The afternoon stays clean with a light cross-offshore breeze and 2ft swell. That’s the standout for the first week.
After that, Wednesday the 22nd through Friday the 24th is mostly poor to marginal again, with a building NW swell up to 6ft. The wind is cross-on, and the period is short. The energy gets strong on Friday the 24th afternoon (1001), but it’s a choppy mess.
Looking further ahead, the second week is a bit of a mixed bag. From Saturday the 25th through to the end of the month, we see a long-period SW groundswell (18 to 21 seconds) pushing through, but the size is mostly 2ft to 4ft. The wind stays cross-on or cross, so it’s not clean. The energy is moderate to strong (767 to 1188), but the conditions are marginal. A long-period SW groundswell like that can be a bit tricky on a sandbar, often breaking a bit too straight. It’s not a standout.
By Wednesday the 30th of July, the swell jumps up to 8ft from the NW with a short period (9 seconds). That’s big, and with a cross-on wind, it’s going to be a messy, powerful wave. Only for the experts, and even then, it’s not clean. The energy is very strong (1247 to 1431). This continues into the start of August, with 7ft to 7ft NW swell, but the wind is onshore or cross-on. It’s heavy, but rough.
Overall, the best bet is Tuesday the 21st for a clean, small session on the glassy morning. Everything else is a fight with the wind or just too big and messy. There’s a long gap of poor conditions from the 22nd through the 24th, and then again from the 25th onwards it’s mostly marginal.
Rusty.
