The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down what's headed our way.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with ya – it's a bit of a slow start and most of this run looks pretty average for Camel Rock. The water's sitting at 55°, which is about a degree and a half cooler than usual for this time of year, so you'll want a decent spring suit.
The first real chance to get wet isn't till the late morning of Monday the 19th. We've got a small 5ft swell from the NW, and what's key here is that offshore wind from the WNW. That'll keep the surface clean. The combined energy is moderate at 555. The period's a bit short though, only 7 seconds, so the waves will be a little weak and crumbly – fine for a beginner log session though.
Things turn pretty poor from there for a while. We get a bump in size on the 23rd, a Sunday morning with a 6ft NW swell and offshore WNW wind again (combined energy 576), but it's messy and the wind swings cross-onshore in the arvo. That's the biggest we see, and it's not worth the paddle.
We finally get a proper highlight at the very tail end of the month. On Monday the 31st of August, the afternoon glass-off kicks in. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and we get a solid 15-second period groundswell from the SW at 2ft. The combined energy is 361. Now, that long period means it might stand up a bit straight on the sandbar, but with conditions that clean, you'll find a couple of fun ones. It's a consistent break, so there'll be waves for everyone, though it can get a crowd.
The rest of the first week of September looks like a return to small, choppy NE windswell. Not much to write home about. So, your one true standout is the glassy session on the 31st. The rest of the run? Keep an eye on the forecast, but don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
