The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Camel Rock. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s a real gem hiding in the second week if you’ve got the patience.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, to be honest. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are just poor. We’re looking at messy, cross-onshore winds and weak, short-period swell that’s just not worth the paddle out. The combined energy is weak, sitting around 334 to 467 (moderate energy), and it’s just not clean. You’d be fighting chop for nothing.
Friday the 17th through the weekend is still marginal. The swell picks up a little, with some longer-period energy coming through on the 17th and 18th, but the wind is still working against us. The combined energy gets into the 800s to 1000s (moderate to strong energy), but it’s not clean. Saturday morning the 18th actually has a moment of offshore wind, but the swell is small at 3ft from the WNW, and the wave comment says “marginal.” It’s a tease.
Then we get to Sunday the 19th afternoon. This is the first real standout. The wind goes glassy – dead calm, 3 mph from the WSW, and the swell is a solid 5ft from the NW. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a bit junky, but when it’s that clean, you take what you can get. The combined energy is 722 (moderate energy). It’s not a world-class wave, but it’ll be the most fun you’ll have all week. This is a beginner-friendly size, so it’s a good one for a cruise.
Now, here’s the real kicker. After a bunch of flat, poor days, we get to Friday the 24th of July afternoon. This is the absolute best on offer. The swell is only 2ft, but it’s from the SW with a very long period of 24 seconds. That’s pure groundswell, and it’s glassy. The combined energy is 678 (moderate energy). For a sandbar like Camel Rock, that long period can make the waves a bit straight, but the glassy conditions will make it look like a million bucks. It’s a rare, clean window.
The following week is a mixed bag. Saturday the 25th morning has a bigger 6ft swell from the NW, but it’s onshore and a bit junky with an 8-second period. That’s getting too big for beginners. Tuesday the 29th morning sees the biggest swell of the whole run at 8ft from the NW, with a 9-second period. The combined energy is 1361 (strong to very strong energy). That’s expert-only territory, and the wind is still cross-onshore, so it’ll be a messy, powerful beast. Not for the faint of heart.
Overall, the run is full of small, choppy days, but lock in Sunday the 19th afternoon for a glassy session, and if you’re patient, Friday the 24th of July afternoon is the real hidden treasure with that long-period glass.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
