The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

The first few days of this outlook are a bit of a write-off, with tiny swell and poor conditions. We’re looking at a dry spell from now through the 7th of August, with nothing really worth paddling out for. The action doesn’t really start to build until the 8th, and then we’ve got a real mixed bag.

The standout window is the morning of Saturday the 8th. It’s not huge, but it’s clean. Caves Point is looking at a 4ft S swell with a 9-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 216. What makes this one special is the glass conditions – zero wind, clean as a whistle. For a point break like this, that’s a dream. The wind is offshore from the NNW, and the swell direction from the S is right in the sweet spot. Expect a few others out, but with that clarity, it’ll be worth the fight.

The next real highlight is the morning of Tuesday the 11th. The swell jumps up to 4ft from the S, with a nice 11-second period, giving it some real grunt. The combined energy is strong at 392. The wind is a light NNW cross-off, keeping the face clean. This is a proper groundswell pulse, and for a point break, that longer period will wrap in beautifully. Not as glassy as the 8th, but a bigger, more powerful wave.

After that, things get weird. The 14th and 15th of August see a massive spike in swell, but it’s a problem. We’re looking at 12ft to 15ft S swell – that’s a lot of water. The combined energy readings are monstrous (3812, 7533). This is way too big for Caves Point, even for the experienced crew. The wind is cross-shore, making it messy. Honestly, this looks more like a kiteboarding setup than a paddle surf session.

The 17th of August finally brings it back into the realm of the possible. The morning has a 10ft SE swell, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is still very strong at 1522. The wind is a light N cross-off, keeping it clean. This is excellent surf, but only for experienced surfers – that size is no joke. It’s the only real window for the big-wave hunters in the second week.

Water temps are about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.

Rusty, signing off.
