Table - best surf conditions forecast for Little Avalon over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get straight into it, looking at what Little Avalon has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
We've got a bit of a slow start, but there's a real pulse of energy coming through later on. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so you won't need a thick suit.
The first few days are a write-off. From Sunday the 12th right through to Thursday the 16th, it's mostly flat or tiny, crummy junk. The swell that does show is weak and short-period, with a combined energy reading of just 113 to 4, so not worth paddling out for. The wind is a cross-offshore, but there's just no power behind it.
Things start to get a little interesting on Friday the 17th. The swell kicks up to 6ft from the East, with a period of 9 seconds and a moderate energy level of 455. The wind is a cross-offshore, but it's still labeled as marginal. It's a start, but not the one to get excited about.
Saturday the 18th is the first real pick of the early period. The swell is holding at 6ft from the East, with a period of 8 seconds, but the energy is building with a reading of 422. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, which is going to keep things pretty clean. It's a good solid day for a session, and it's not too big for most.
The standout window, and the one you’ve been waiting for, hits on Sunday the 19th. This is the big one. We’re looking at a solid 8ft to 10ft of East swell, with a long 11-second period. The combined energy shoots up to 1613, which is a very strong pulse. The morning is the pick, with a light offshore SSW breeze at 10 km/h, meaning the faces will be glassy and clean. However, this is serious swell. At 8ft to 10ft, it's only for the experienced crew. The long period from the East means it will be walling up, but at a reef like Little Avalon, that's a beautiful thing. This is the best on offer, hands down.
Monday the 20th sees the swell easing but still pumping at 8ft from the East. The wind shifts to a cross and then onshore, so the quality dips a bit compared to Sunday.
The second week has some more good swell, but it's a bit less certain. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd both have 6ft to 6ft of East swell with a clean cross-offshore wind in the morning. The energy is still solid, with readings of 888 and 912 respectively. The standout here is the 13-second period on Wednesday the 22nd, which will give you some real power and shape. That's a good morning session before the wind turns onshore.
After that, the swell drops off through the 23rd and 24th, with the energy fading to 408 and then picking up slightly to 542 on the 24th. The wind stays mostly cross-off, but the size drops. By the 26th and 27th, we're back down to small, ordinary waves, with a fresh breeze on the 26th making it a bit of a mess.
So, to sum it up: the early week is a washout, but there's a couple of good sessions coming. The absolute standout is the morning of Sunday the 19th for the experienced crew. For the rest of us, Saturday the 18th and the mornings of Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd are your best bets for a clean, fun wave.
Rusty.
