The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for Little Avalon. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and messy surf ahead, with a few brief moments that might be worth a look if you’re desperate. The water’s sitting at about 64°, which is right around normal for this time of year, so at least the temp won’t put you off.
Right now, there’s nothing on offer. The first few days are all small, onshore junk with zero energy. Wednesday the 19th shows a little 4ft swell, but it’s coming from the ESE with a short 10-second period and the wind is straight onshore, making it a complete write-off. Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st are even worse – tiny waves, weak windswell, and messy conditions. Saturday the 22nd has a clean morning with a light offshore SSW breeze, but the swell is only 1ft, so you’d be lucky to get a knee-high ripple. That’s basically a flat day.
We’ve got a real dry spell here. From the 19th right through to the 24th, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The energy readings are all in the double digits, mostly under 100, which is weak and unimpressive. The swell direction is mostly from the east or northeast, and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, churning up the surface.
Then, on Tuesday the 25th, things finally look up – just a little. The morning brings a 5ft NE swell with a 7-second period, and the wind is glassy, dead calm. Combined energy jumps to 200, which is moderate. The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions,” but it’s still a short-period swell, so it’s not going to have much shape. It’s a small window, but if you’re keen, that Tuesday morning might be the best we get. The afternoon stays glassy with a 4ft ENE swell, so you could get a couple of hours in before it fades.
After that, it’s back to square one. Wednesday the 26th gets hammered by a strong breeze from the west, smashing the 3ft NE swell into a cross-offshore mess. The rest of the week into early September is a parade of tiny waves, onshore winds, and poor conditions. The energy readings drop back into the teens and twenties, which is barely surfable.
The only other blip on the radar is Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning shows a 7ft SE swell with an 11-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1168 – that’s strong. But the wind is cross-onshore from the ENE, making it choppy and messy. The wave comment calls it “marginal” at best. That’s a big swell for an advanced reef break like Little Avalon, but the wind is going to ruin it. If you’re an expert and don’t mind a bit of chop, you might get some overhead waves, but it’s not going to be clean.
So, to sum it up: the standout is Tuesday the 25th, with glassy conditions and a small but surfable swell. The rest is a long, frustrating wait. If you’re desperate, the 3rd of September might offer some big, messy waves, but don’t expect much.
