The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here. We’ve got a pretty quiet start to the forecast period for Little Avalon, but there’s a window of proper surf building toward the end of the week and into the weekend. Let’s break it down.

Right now, we’re looking at a few days of flat to tiny conditions. From Tuesday 14 July right through to Friday 17 July, there’s barely a ripple – the combined swell energy is down in the weak zone (0 to 29 units), so you can leave the board in the car. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.

Things start to stir on Saturday 18 July. The morning brings a small ESE swell at 4 ft with a short 6-second period and weak energy (125 units). The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not great. By the afternoon, the swell picks up a tad to 4 ft, period stretches to 7 seconds, and energy climbs to 156 units, but it’s still only surfable, not special.

Now, Sunday 19 July morning is the standout. This is where it gets interesting. A clean, 6 ft east swell running at 10 seconds rolls in, with combined energy hitting 618 units – moderate to strong. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the south, making for clean, well-shaped waves. This is a proper session for advanced surfers at Little Avalon (reef). The swell direction from the east is a good match for the optimum NE direction, and with that long period, the waves will have real push and form. Just be aware, crowds are often here, so expect company.

The afternoon of Sunday 19 July drops off a bit with a cross-shore breeze and marginal conditions. Monday 20 July stays similar with cross-on winds, nothing to get excited about. Tuesday 21 July morning sees a clean 5 ft ENE swell, 10-second period, and 406 units of energy – another good window with light offshore winds from the west. Wednesday 22 July morning repeats the theme: 5 ft, 10 seconds, clean offshore SW wind. These are solid, workable days.

After that, the swell tapers through the rest of the week – Thursday 23 July to Saturday 25 July – with heights dropping to 3-5 ft and energy falling back to moderate levels (240-459 units). Winds are mixed, mostly cross or cross-on, so it’s not going to be epic. The best of the second week is Sunday 26 July: a clean 4 ft east swell, 10-second period, light offshore wind from the west or south-southwest, and 249 units of energy. It’s smaller, but clean and fun.

From Monday 27 July onward, the wind picks up strong (25 mph from the south-southwest), and the swell drops to under 3 ft, with energy falling to weak levels. Conditions get messy. By Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 July, the swell is small and the wind is gusty – not worth chasing.

So, the clear best on offer is Sunday 19 July morning – that’s your call. Tuesday 21 July and Wednesday 22 July mornings are also good, clean options. The rest is mostly small and marginal.

Rusty.
