The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s shaking at Little Avalon.
First thing’s first, it’s going to be a long, dry spell out there for the next little while. Don’t bother waxing up just yet, because the first week and a half is just about flat. Things get interesting right at the tail end of the outlook, but you’re going to need some patience.
Right now, heading into Tuesday the 18th of August, the water temp is about 64°F, which is pretty normal for the season. The swell is tiny, about 4ft from the ESE, but it’s weak – a 7-second period and messy cross-onshore breeze. The energy is a poor 129. Just ugly.
Wednesday the 19th morning is the only bright spot in the early days. Glassy conditions with a small 3ft ESE swell (combined energy 166), but it’s still a short-period wave at 7 seconds. You *could* surf it, but it’s nothing to write home about.
Then the taps turn off. From Thursday the 20th right through to Tuesday the 1st of September, the swell drops to nothing – mostly under 3ft, and often way smaller. The energy numbers are in the basement, mostly between 8 and 79. Wind is onshore, offshore, cross-shore – just a mess, and the waves aren't there anyway.
But hold on. Wednesday morning the 2nd of September is a whole different story. A clean 6ft swell from the SE, a solid 10-second period, and light winds make for a setup that finally has some life. The combined energy hits 675 – that’s proper power. Little Avalon is an advanced reef break, and while the direction isn't dead-on optimal, clean waves of this size are a real treat. This is the only true standout in the whole 16-day window, but remember, it’s over a week out, so keep your fingers crossed.
So, the long and short of it: it’s a flat spell until that Wednesday morning on the 2nd of September. That one’s got some promise.
Rusty.
