The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Little Avalon is a tough one to write. We're looking at a pretty barren run for the next sixteen days, so don't rush to grab your board just yet.
The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year – nothing unusual there.
The pattern starts now and honestly, the whole first week is a write-off. From Thursday the 20th of August right through, we've got flat, weak, onshore slop. You're looking at tiny swell (1 ft to 4 ft) with a short period of just 6 to 7 seconds, so it's all windswell with no power. The combined swell energy barely nudges into three digits a few times [115], but it's paired with onshore or cross-onshore wind and the wave comment is "poor surf conditions" every single session. Nothing to see here.
This dead spell stretches all the way through to Tuesday the 25th of August. We finally get a tiny glimmer of hope on Wednesday the 26th of August morning, with the wind swinging offshore from the SW at 9 mph and the surf cleaning up. But the swell is only 2 ft at 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak [72]. The call is "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – so you could get a knee-high, clean little ripple, but it's not worth a drive.
Thursday the 27th of August morning keeps that offshore wind, but again we're stuck with 2 ft at 8 seconds and only [41] combined energy.
Now, the standout – and I'm being generous here – is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. The swell bumps up to 5 ft at 8 seconds from the NE, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate [350]. The wind is offshore from the SSW at 16 mph, making it clean. This is the best on offer, but it's still only rated as "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions". The period is short at 8 seconds, so it won't have much push or shape. It's a long way out and not certain, but if I had to pick a time to check the surf, that'd be it.
We then taper off into early September. Tuesday the 1st of September morning gives you glassy conditions with 3 ft at 8 seconds from the ENE. The combined energy is a weak [72] and it's "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is also glassy, but the swell drops to a tiny 2 ft.
Overall, this is a bleak run for Little Avalon. There are no solid groundswells in the mix, only inconsistent short-period windswell and mostly poor wind. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on the bigger, windier days.
Rusty.
