The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Little Avalon.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a lean stretch. There's no real swell to speak of for the first few days, and the whole window is a bit of a flat spell overall. We're looking at a solid week of very small, weak surf before we even see a glimmer of something rideable, and even then, it's not going to get anyone too excited. The water temp is sitting around 64°F, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.

The first real chance to wet a line comes on Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. The swell is a tiny 3ft from the ESE with a short period of 7 seconds, so it's weak and won't have much push. The combined energy is only 166, which is weak. Normally I'd say give it a miss, but the wind is glassy, a light 3 mph from the north. That'll make the surface of the water as smooth as silk. For a total beginner just looking to splash around, it might be okay, but for anyone who's surfed before, it's pretty ordinary.

The next little window of opportunity is on the 25th of August, Tuesday morning. We get a bit of a shift with a light offshore breeze from the SSW at 9 mph, cleaning up some tiny 2ft waves from the ENE. The period is still short at 7 seconds. The energy is 50 (weak), so it's not much, but it'll be clean. That afternoon also looks tidy with a light cross-offshore wind on similar-sized, weak waves.

Honestly, there just isn't a standout session in this whole 16-day outlook. The swell never gets above 4ft, and that's on a day with terrible onshore wind. The best of a bad bunch, if you're desperate for a paddle, would be the early morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. The wind is a clean offshore from the SW at 6 mph, and we might see a few 2ft lines from the ENE with a marginally better period of 9 seconds (energy 50). It's still small and weak, but it'll be the cleanest and most surfable of the whole period.

Don't bother with the rest of the second week. It's a whole lot of flat, tiny, or blown-out conditions. For a spot that's usually fairly consistent, this is a real quiet run. Sometimes it just goes like that.

Stay tuned, the forecasts can change.

Rusty.
