The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Little Avalon.
Honestly, it’s a tough outlook for the next week and a half. The ocean is trying to find its rhythm, but there’s a lot of rubbish to sift through before we get anything decent. The wave energy is low for most of the run, and the wind is all over the shop. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, but you’ll need to be patient.
The first couple of days are a write-off. Friday the 21st through to Tuesday the 25th of August are just flat or poor. We’re looking at weak, short-period windswell from the NNE and NE, all under 4ft, with periods sitting at 5-7 seconds. The combined energy is a joke, mostly in the double digits. The wind is a mess – cross-on, onshore, choppy – it’s all bad. There’s nothing to get excited about. You’re better off doing something else.
Then, on Wednesday the 26th of August, the game changes. We get a proper winter swell pushing in from the ENE. Forecast shows 5ft on the morning with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to a solid 229. That’s the real deal. More importantly, the wind is offshore from the SW. That’s a clean, lined-up wave at Little Avalon, and for a reef break this exposed, clean conditions are gold. The water temperature is 64° – about average for this time of year, so the wetsuit is staying on. This is the standout session. The swell is just right for an advanced crew, not too big, not too small, and the wind will make the faces nice and smooth. Get in the water Wednesday morning.
Thursday the 27th starts with a glassy morning, but the swell has dropped a little to 3ft. The energy is down to 125, and it’s surfable, but it’s really just a leftover from the day before. The afternoon gets messy again with a cross-on wind. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are poor again, with the wind turning onshore and the swell dropping below 3ft.
The following week into September is a mixed bag of tiny, weak swell and average wind. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September with a 2ft, 10-second period swell and a clean offshore wind from the WSW, but the energy is only 88. It’s a window for a longboard if you’re desperate, but it’s not a standout.
The real wildcard comes on Saturday the 5th of September. The afternoon shows a bump in swell to 5ft, but the period is a terrible 5 seconds. The energy is 106, and the wind is offshore from the WSW, which is clean. But that short period means it’s just a messy windswell, not the clean groundswell we want. Still, a clean, offshore afternoon with some size is better than a kick in the teeth. Keep an eye on it, but don’t hold your breath.
So, the call is simple. The one true standout is the Wednesday morning session on the 26th of August. That’s your best bet. After that, it’s a lot of waiting. The rest of the 16 days is mostly small, weak, and poorly winded. Don’t bother with the rest unless you’re desperate for a paddle.
Rusty, signing off.
