The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim start. We’ve got a real quiet spell coming up, so don’t bother paddling out for the first few days. The few waves that do show are small, weak, and mostly blown out by onshore winds. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing special there.
The first real chance to get wet looks like Thursday morning, the 27th of August. Little Avalon is a reef break, exposed to the swell, and it’s a very consistent spot. The swell is tiny, only 3 ft from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined swell energy is low (76). But the wind is the big story here – it’s from the south at just 3 mph and glassy. That’s a major positive. It’ll be clean, but the waves are going to be small and weak. It’s a surfable option, but nothing to write home about. The crowds are often here, so expect company.
The outlook doesn’t really improve much after that. We’ve got a few more mornings with glassy conditions, like the 29th of August and the 31st of August, and early on the 2nd of September, but the swell just doesn’t get its act together. It hovers around 2 ft. The best-looking moment in the whole 16 days is actually Tuesday afternoon, the 1st of September. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the NE, with a 10-second period, and the combined energy hits 234 (moderate energy). The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SE at 9 mph. That’s the standout. It’s still only marginal, but it’s the best of a bad lot.
After that, it’s back to small, choppy, or onshore junk. The session on the 4th of September has clean cross-offshore winds, but the swell is a pathetic 2 ft. Not worth the drive.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off for anything fun. The only real window to get a few grovelly ones is that Thursday morning the 27th if you’re desperate, or keep your fingers crossed for the 1st of September. This is a tough stretch. It’s a very consistent break, so it won’t be like this forever, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
