The Lowdown

Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. We’ve got a real mixed bag coming up at Little Avalon over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s a proper window of quality surf that’ll get the blood pumping, especially for the advanced crew.

Right now, the swell is tiny and the conditions are only ordinary. You’ll see a couple of days of small, weak waves around 1 ft to 2 ft, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 52 to 61, so hardly worth paddling out for. This is the quiet before the storm.

The real action starts to build on Sunday the 19th of July. We’ve got a solid 6 ft to 7 ft groundswell from the ENE, with a period of 11 seconds, giving it some real grunt. The combined energy jumps right up to 1123, which is strong. But, and it’s a big but, the wind is cross-shore, leaving a light cross-chop on the surface. It’s a powerful swell, but it won’t be perfect. The water temp is about average for this time of year.

Now, here’s the standout. Monday morning, the 20th of July. This is the one you wait for. The swell drops slightly to a still-juicy 6 ft from the ENE, with a 10-second period, giving a combined energy of 628 (moderate to strong). The wind goes glassy from the WNW. Glassy. That means absolutely clean, smooth conditions. For a spot like this, that’s a dream. It’s going to be very good surf, and the 6 ft height is a solid size for a reef break, but at that size, it’s bordering on too big for beginners, so bring your A-game. The break is considered “very consistent” so you’ll be getting plenty of waves. Watch out for the crowds though, they’re “often” here.

Tuesday the 21st of July morning is also a good runner-up, with another 5 ft of clean swell and glassy conditions from the NW. The combined energy is 410, still offering good waves.

The surf drops off significantly after Wednesday the 22nd, with a long stretch of poor to flat conditions. There’s a gap of about four days with nothing to get excited about. A couple of small, clean waves pop up on the 26th of July, but the swell is still weak.

Then, a second promising pulse arrives on Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th of July. This is a long-range call, so keep an eye on it. We’re looking at a 5 ft swell from the SE, with a long 12-second period, giving a combined energy of 666 to 704 (strong). The wind is clean, cross-off or gentle offshore, so the conditions should be lined up. This is a solid groundswell and with that long period, the waves will have plenty of power. It’s looking like another very good session for the more experienced surfers.

The rest of the run into August is a complete write-off with tiny, stormy junk. The combined energy is utterly pathetic, dropping to single digits and the wind is either onshore or cross-shore with rain. Not worth a look.

So, to sum it up: The best on offer is Monday morning, the 20th of July, with that 6 ft ENE swell and glassy conditions. The second standout is the pulse on the 27th and 28th of July, which is a longer-range promise. Don’t bother with the rest.

Stay salty and keep your eyes on the horizon.

Rusty.
