The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this outlook for Little Avalon is a bit of a tough one. We’ve got a 16-day window, but there’s a real gap at the start. The first few days are a write-off, so don’t bother paddling out until we get past the weekend.
Things start to look a little more interesting from Wednesday the 26th. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – nothing unusual there.
The first real chance to get wet is on Wednesday morning, the 26th. Little Avalon is seeing a 4ft swell from the NE, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is offshore from the SSW at 12 mph, which is a major positive – it’s gonna be clean. The combined energy is moderate (178). It’s a reef break, advanced crew only, and it’s very consistent. Just a heads up, it can get crowded here often. The swell direction is NE, but the optimum is from the NE, so that’s a good match. Not a standout, but it’s the best of a pretty average run.
Thursday the 27th has a drop-off. Morning sees a 3ft swell from the ENE with a light offshore breeze, but the energy is weak (75). It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
Friday morning the 28th is glassy with a 3ft ENE swell, period 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate (111). It’ll be clean, but still just ordinary.
Saturday the 29th morning has a 3ft ENE swell with a light offshore, clean but weak energy (80).
Sunday the 30th morning is similar – 2ft ENE swell, clean, but weak energy (71).
After that, it’s pretty much back to poor conditions for the rest of the run into the first week of September. The swell drops right off to 1ft or 1.0ft, and while the wind is sometimes clean, there’s just no power. The second week is a real struggle, with barely any energy at all. The best call in that second week is probably Saturday the 5th of September afternoon, when it goes glassy with a 2ft NE swell, but the period is a short 4 seconds and the energy is weak (24). It’s a long way off, so don’t bank on it.
Nothing here is a true standout. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. The only real window is that Wednesday the 26th, and even then, it’s just ordinary conditions. For a reef break that’s advanced-only and often crowded, this isn’t the one to get excited about.
Rusty.
