The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Little Avalon has in store for us.
The next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a real slow start, with nothing worth paddling out for until the end of the week. The first few days are a write-off with poor conditions and no surf at all. It’s not until Friday the 17th that we see a tiny, 3ft wave with a short 5-second period, but the wind is all over the place and the combined energy is only a weak 46, so that’s a skip. Saturday morning the 18th is a little better with 4ft from the east at 7 seconds, but it’s still ordinary.
The real standout window starts to build on Sunday the 19th. We’ve got a solid 7ft swell rolling in from the east with a decent 11-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1026, so there’s plenty of power. The catch is it’s a cross-shore wind, so it’s a bit messy. This is advanced territory; over 8ft is for experts only, but this is in the big, grunty zone for experienced surfers. The water temp is about 65°, which is pretty normal for the time of year, so no surprises there.
But the best of the whole run? That’s Monday morning the 20th. The swell drops slightly to a very manageable 5ft, but it’s still from the east-northeast with a 10-second period, giving a solid 542 units of energy. The wind is dead calm, glassy, zero knots. For a reef break like Little Avalon, that’s as good as it gets. The wind is offshore from the north, and the water will be like a mirror. It’s consistent, clean, and the optimum swell direction from the northeast lines up perfectly. This is the one to circle. The afternoon turns more onshore, so get it early.
The following Thursday morning the 23rd is another good shout. A 6ft east swell at 11 seconds, with a clean cross-off breeze from the west-northwest. That’s a solid, clean wave with 733 units of energy. It’s not quite as glassy as Monday, but it’s still very good. The afternoon of the 23rd even gets a true offshore wind from the west-southwest. That’s a beautiful forecast.
After that, it tails off. The end of July and the start of the last week sees the swell drop back below 3ft and the wind gets messy. There’s a few mornings with a clean cross-off breeze and a small 3ft wave, but it’s not the kind of energy that gets you out of bed. The 27th and 28th mornings are possible for a longboard or a foiler, but it’s not the main event.
To sum it up: the first few days are a total loss. Wait for Sunday the 19th for the bigger grunt, but Monday the 20th morning is the absolute standout. Get there at dawn.
Rusty.
