Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, mate, Rusty here with the long-range look for Little Avalon. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty slim for a proper paddle. There's only one real standout window we can get excited about, but it's a fair way off.
First up, for the rest of this week and through the weekend, don't get your hopes up. Swell's tiny and generally weak, with very ordinary conditions. There's a brief moment on Tuesday the 7th morning where a long-period, 14-second groundswell from the ESE bumps the energy up a notch (121), but it’s still only about 2ft. The wind is light offshore out of the SW for that session, so it’d be clean, but you're basically fighting for scraps. It's a reef break for advanced surfers only, and it's been inconsistent before, so manage expectations. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
After that, we're looking at a proper dry spell. From Wednesday afternoon the 8th through to Thursday the 16th, there’s virtually nothing on the cards. The combined wave energy drops right off to single or low double digits most days. The wind is light to moderate from various directions, often cross-off or directly offshore, but there's just no swell to work with. It’s a real blank run for a solid eight days.
Now for the only real bright spot on the horizon. Mark your calendars for the morning of Saturday the 18th of July. A pulse of about 5ft swell from the E at a short 7-second period looks to roll in, pushing the energy levels up to a solid 332 – that's a moderate punch for this spot. Crucially, we've got a SW offshore wind blowing at about 12 mph, which should keep things clean with a bit of texture, and the forecast says "expect good surf conditions". This is a reef setup, so that short-period swell might not have the perfect shape of a long-period groundswell, but the size and clean wind should make it the best we've seen all period. This is definitely for advanced surfers only, as 5ft over a reef can be a handful.
So that's it. A whole lot of waiting for one morning that looks genuinely promising. Keep an eye on things before then, but don't be surprised if the line-up stays empty.
Rusty.
