The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half at Camboinhas is a real mixed bag, and you're gonna have to be patient. We're looking at a long stretch of pretty ordinary, small surf before things finally get interesting around the second week of August. The water temp is sitting at a comfortable 73°F, which is about spot on for this time of year, so at least you won't need a thick wetsuit.

The first week is a write-off. From Sunday the 2nd right through to the end of the following week, we've got tiny, weak waves. You'll see some morning action with tiny 2ft swells from the south, but the energy is pathetic, and it's just not worth paddling out for. The wind is light and cross-off in the mornings, which is clean, but there's just no push. Then on Wednesday the 5th, things perk up a little with a 3ft south swell and better energy, but it's still very ordinary. The pattern is the same: small, weak, and uninspiring.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. Hold onto your board, because around Monday the 10th of August, a proper south swell starts to fill in. It's big – we're talking 8ft to 8ft – and the energy is pumping. But, and it's a big but, the wind is not on our side. It's blowing cross-off to cross-onshore, and with that much size, it's going to be a messy, chunky beast. This is strictly for experts only. The swell period is a long 15 seconds, which is a proper groundswell, but it'll be breaking pretty straight and fast on the beach. For most of us, it's a pass.

The real standout, the one you've been waiting for, is the morning of Friday the 14th of August. The swell drops a touch to a solid 6ft from the south, but the wind swings to a beautiful offshore breeze from the east-northeast. The wave energy is still strong, and the 13-second period will give you some beautifully shaped, powerful lines. This is the best session on offer. It's clean, it's punchy, and it's all yours. The morning of Saturday the 15th is also a good one with a 4ft south swell and offshore winds, but it's not the standout.

After that, the swell fades away quickly, and we're back to tiny, weak waves by Sunday the 16th. So, mark your calendar for Friday the 14th – that's your window.

Rusty.
