The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about the coming swell window at Amaralina. This is not a classic stretch for us; the pattern is choppy, small, and mostly cross-shore. If you were hoping for something firing straight away, it’s not happening. We’ve got a long, quiet run ahead.
The water’s sitting at about 79°, which is pretty normal for this time of year – no real anomaly there.
The first real glimpse of something decent doesn’t show up until Friday morning, the 21st of August. That morning brings a light offshore breeze from the NNE, and we get a small, 3ft swell from the ESE with a short 8-second period. The energy is weak at 131, but the wind is light and it’s clean. It’s not pumping – just surfable, ordinary waves. That afternoon the wind swings back to cross-shore and chops it up.
Saturday morning, the 22nd of August, offers another clean window. The swell drops to 3ft from the ESE, period down to 7 seconds, and energy down to 95. It’s small but clean with a light offshore from the north. After that, it’s pretty much all cross-onshore slop and lumpy conditions right through until the end of the month.
There’s a little pulse of longer-period swell on Wednesday morning, the 26th of August – 2ft from the south at 13 seconds, which is a groundswell. The energy jumps to 415, which is moderate, but the height is tiny and the wind is cross-shore. Not really worth paddling out for.
The one morning that actually stands out as the best of the entire forecast is Monday the 31st of August. We get a glassy morning with an easterly swell of 4ft at 7 seconds, and the energy is moderate at 239. The wind is virtually nothing from the ENE – glassy conditions. For Amaralina, that’s as good as it gets in this stretch. The waves will be clean and fun for a beginner-plus spot like this. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so you might have company. The swell direction is from the east, which isn’t the ideal south for this break, but the clean conditions make it work.
After that, the first few days of September are small again with offshore winds but very little size – 2ft to 3ft. Nothing to get excited about. Thursday the 3rd of September has a clean morning but it’s tiny.
To be honest, this is a pretty flat 16-day window for Amaralina. If you’re a beginner or just want a gentle paddle in clean little waves, the mornings of the 21st, 22nd, 31st of August, and the 1st and 2nd of September are your windows. But if you want proper waves, you’re looking at a long wait.
