The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s look at what’s on offer at Amaralina over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, you’re looking at a pretty rough run for quite a while. The first solid week through to the morning of Monday the 20th is just a write-off – strong, cross-onshore winds, lumpy, messy, and poor surf. There’s a decent amount of swell energy in the water at times, but it’s completely wasted. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday morning, the 20th of July. The wind goes glassy, and the swell is 5ft from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate. The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions,” and it’s the only time in the whole period that gets a score worth mentioning. But it’s rain showers, and the wind is glassy, so it’ll be clean. After that, we’re back into choppy, cross-onshore junk for days.
There’s a brief window on Saturday the 25th morning. The swell drops to 3ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, and the wind is light cross-off (NER) so it’s clean. The combined energy is weak. And again on Sunday the 26th morning, the wind goes offshore (NNE) with 3ft ESE swell, period 8 seconds, and the energy is still weak. Both are “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Small, clean, but not exciting.
The real standout is that Monday morning, the 20th. It’s the only time the conditions actually line up with glassy wind and a surfable wave height. If you’re a beginner, that 5ft is fine – not too big. For more experienced surfers, it’s small but at least clean. Crowds are possible at Amaralina (the “sometimes” crowd note), so local knowledge helps.
After that, the forecast goes quiet again with poor surf and onshore winds through the end of the month. Honestly, there’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations after the 26th. So, if you’re keen, circle Monday the 20th and maybe the weekend mornings of the 25th and 26th, but keep expectations low.
Rusty.
