The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it.

Gonna be honest with you, right out of the gate: we’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch here at Ipitanga. The next week and a half is mostly a write-off for any kind of decent surf. The wind is almost constantly cross-onshore or worse, and the wave quality is described as poor day after day. The swell is there at times, with moderate wave energy (readings like 499 and 481 on the 28th), but it’s just not coming together. The wind is ruining it. We’ve got a long gap of pretty much nothing worth paddling out for, from the start of the period right through until early September.

The first real glimmer of something possible doesn’t show up until Friday the 4th of September. It’s still only a “marginal” call, but at least the morning brings a 5ft south swell with a period of 7 seconds and a lighter cross-onshore breeze from the SSE at 6 mph. The combined energy is moderate (389). It’s not going to be pretty, but it might be the most rideable we’ve seen in a while. Still, keep expectations low.

Then, there’s a real standout, but it’s a long way off. On Wednesday the 9th of September, we get a pulse of long-period groundswell from the south. The morning shows a 3ft south swell with a very long period of 17 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 525 (strong wave energy). The wind is still cross-onshore from the NE at 9 mph, which is not ideal, but that kind of period means the waves will have real shape and push. This is the best-looking window in the whole forecast. Because it’s long-period, Ipitanga, being a beach break, might see those waves standing up a bit too straight, but if you get a peak, it’ll be worth it. The afternoon energy is even higher at 659, but the wind gets stronger from the east at 16 mph, making it choppier. Hit the morning if you can. This is a promising call, but we’re over a week out, so don’t book the day off just yet.

Water temp is sitting around 79°F, which is about average for this time of year.

For now, it’s a waiting game. A lot of flat, windy, or choppy days ahead. But that south groundswell on the 9th is something to keep an eye on.

Rusty.
