The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming up for our local stretch.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for any decent waves. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak swell and wind that’s mostly onshore or cross-onshore, which is just going to keep things messy. The water is way warmer than normal for this time of year, about 3° above average, which is pretty unusual.
We’re talking about Venice Pier here, and the first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 14th through to the end of that week, we’re looking at tiny 1ft swell from the SSW with a weak combined energy reading (around 139). Wind is on it, making for poor conditions. Not worth paddling out.
The weekend of the 18th and 19th sees the swell tick up just a fraction to 2ft, and the energy picks up a bit (hitting 308 on Sunday morning), but it’s still onshore wind. It’s a marginal call at best.
The first real hint of something happens around Thursday the 23rd. The swell starts to build, with the morning showing 3ft from the SSE, a period of 14 seconds, and a combined energy of 572. The wind is cross-shore from the SSE, so it’s not perfect, but it’s a step up. The energy continues to climb into Friday the 24th with 4ft from the S and a solid 746 energy reading, but again, the wind is light cross-onshore.
The best bet in this whole outlook is Saturday morning, July 25th. The swell peaks at 4ft from the S, with a period of 14 seconds and a combined energy of 917 – that’s the most power we’ll see. The wind is light from the S, which is cross-onshore, but it’s light enough that it might stay reasonably clean. The swell is still small enough for beginners, but the energy is there for a fun little wave. After that, the swell backs off again into the last week of July, with onshore winds returning.
So, if you’re keen, keep your eye on that Saturday morning the 25th. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best of a pretty average run. The rest of the time, you’re better off finding something else to do.
Rusty.
