Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the Venice Pier stretch over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – the outlook is a tough one for paddle surfing.
We’ve got a real dry spell to start. From now through to the morning of Friday, July 17th, it’s pretty much a write-off. The wave comment keeps telling us “poor surf conditions” with scores that are a flat zero. The energy in the water is there – you can see the combined swell energy values bouncing around between 197 and 515, which is moderate wave energy – but it’s all coming from the SSW. That means the wind is blowing from the same direction, making it a messy onshore or cross-onshore breeze. The swell heights are tiny, mostly 1 ft to 3 ft, and with that wind right on it, it’s just not shaping up. Even though the water temp is a very unusual 68°, much warmer than normal for this time of year, it’s not enough to make up for the lack of any decent surf.
There’s a long gap of nearly two weeks with no real recommendations. The only glimmer comes on the morning of Saturday, July 18th. That is the one standout in this whole period. We’ve got a glassy morning – wind from the SSW at just 3 mph, which is basically nothing. The swell is still small at 2 ft from the SW, with a period of 17 seconds. That’s a nice long period groundswell, which for a beach break like Venice Pier can be tricky, as those long lines tend to close out a bit straight. But with no wind, it’ll be clean and the combined energy is a moderate 323. The wave comment finally says “expect good surf conditions.” It’s a small window, and given it’s so far out, treat it as promising but not guaranteed. Still, that Saturday morning glass-off is your best bet if you want to get wet without fighting the chop.
Honestly, for most of this run, if you’re looking for something to do, the setup at this exposed beach looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, with steady cross-onshore wind and light chop.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on that Saturday morning.
Rusty.
