The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the Venice Pier stretch over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a real slow spell for paddle surfing. For the first ten days, there’s basically nothing doing. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly on it or cross-onshore, and the wave comment keeps calling it "poor surf conditions." We’re looking at a long, dry gap from now until the 22nd of July, with only a tiny flicker of life on the 21st morning, but it’s still just a marginal call.
The water temp right now at Venice Pier is sitting at 69°, which is a whopping 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s seriously warm, almost feels like a bath.
The only real standout in the whole period, and I mean the only one worth getting excited about, is the morning of Thursday, the 23rd of July. That morning, the forecast shows a bit of a pulse. We’re looking at 3ft of swell coming from the South, with a period of 15 seconds. That’s a nice long-period groundswell, so it’ll have some energy and shape to it. The combined energy hits 578 (moderate-strong), which is a decent kick. But the real magic is the wind: it’s glassy. Zero wind. That’s the best you can ask for, making for clean, smooth conditions. The morning session on the 23rd is the only time the wave comment says "expect very good surf conditions." It’s still small, but it’s clean. After that, the wind swings back onshore and the swell backs off again.
For the rest of the run, it’s a waiting game. The swell is tiny, under 3ft, and the period is all over the place. The wind is rarely friendly. The 23rd morning is the window.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on that Thursday morning. Rusty out.
