The Lowdown
Alright, mates, let’s talk about what’s happening at Venice Pier. It’s a bit of a quiet stretch coming up, so don’t get your hopes up too high for the next week or so. The water’s sitting at 70°, which is much warmer than we’d usually see for this time of year – that’s a solid 4° above average, so it’ll feel like a bath out there.
We’ve got a long gap to start. From now through the end of August, the surf is pretty poor. You’ll see tiny swell – mostly around 1ft to 2ft – coming from the southwest, with a super-long period around 18 seconds or so. That long period groundswell is normally a good sign for shape, but at a beach break like Venice Pier, it can break a bit straight and the energy is just too weak to do anything with. The combined energy is low, barely cracking 100 to 200 (107 to 247), and winds are mostly onshore or light cross-onshore, making it even messier. There’s nothing to get excited about here.
Early September keeps the same vibe. The first few days of the month are still tiny, with swell under 2ft and poor conditions. The wind stays light but mostly onshore, so the surface is just bumpy. It’s a real drought.
Now, here’s where it gets a little interesting. By the 4th of September, that swell starts to pick up a bit. Friday morning we’re looking at 3ft from the SSW, with a period around 19 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 850, so there’s some substance behind it. Winds are light cross-onshore from the south, which is not ideal but it’s not a total washout. The conditions are still only marginal, but it’s the first real sign of life.
Saturday the 5th of September shapes up as the standout of the whole outlook. The morning brings 4ft from the SSW, period around 17 seconds, and light onshore wind from the SW. The combined energy is strong at 1045, so there’s proper power in the water. It’s still a bit onshore, so the surface won’t be glassy, but given the size and energy, it’s the best we’re going to see. This is a beginner-friendly size – not too big, not too small – but with the wind, it might be a little lumpy. Still, it’s your best bet.
Sunday the 6th of September drops back a bit, with 3ft from the SSW and light cross-shore winds from the SSE. The energy is still moderate (521), but it’s a step down. The whole run is patchy, but that Saturday morning is the one to keep an eye on.
