The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for our local sandbar.
Right off the bat, the water is sitting at 70°, which is a full three degrees warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual, like bathwater.
We’ve got a long stretch ahead, but the first few days are a bit of a write-off. Thursday the 16th through Saturday the 18th, we’re looking at weak, messy little 1ft to 2ft waves from the southwest. The wind is cross-onshore or onshore, and the combined energy is low (126 to 275). It’s just not worth paddling out for. Sunday the 19th, we see a little bump up to 3ft in the morning, coming from the south, and the energy starts to climb (547). Still, it’s marginal, with a light cross-onshore breeze. That’s the start of a pattern, but it’s not epic.
The real standout rolls around on Friday the 24th. The morning session at Venice Pier is looking like the best bet in the whole 16-day window. We’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the south, with a period of 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’ll be a little bumpy but still fun. The combined energy hits 841, which is moderate and building. This is the one to circle on your calendar.
After that, the swell hangs around through the 25th and 26th, but it gets smaller and the wind shifts onshore. The 25th has a long 21-second period from the south-southwest, but it’s only 2ft and the wind is onshore, so it’s a bit of a tease. Into the 27th and 28th, we see a few more marginal mornings with 3ft swell and light onshore wind, but nothing that’ll get your heart racing.
The last few days of the month, from the 29th onward, fizzle out again into small, poor surf with cross-onshore winds. It’s a quiet end to July.
So, to sum it up: the first few days are a wash. Hold out for the morning of Friday the 24th for the cleanest, most energetic waves. The rest of the run is a mix of marginal and poor conditions. Keep an eye on it, but don’t expect any fireworks.
Rusty.
