The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch along Venice Pier is looking pretty flat and blown out for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a long gap of poor surf conditions ahead, so don’t get your hopes up too high.

The pattern starts off with a small, weak swell on Tuesday morning, August 18th, with a 2ft swell from the SSW. The period is 16 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell, but with only 238 units of combined wave energy, it’s feeble. On top of that, the wind is cross-onshore from the SSW at 6 mph, putting a bit of a bump on the face. It’s marginal at best, and honestly, it’s barely worth paddling out for.

Things don’t improve. Wednesday morning, August 19th, offers a similar story: 2ft from the SSW with a 15-second period, but again cross-onshore wind from the S at 3 mph. Combined energy is 261 – still weak. The wave comment says “marginal,” and that’s being kind. For the rest of the week, we’re stuck with onshore winds and tiny swell, dropping to 1.0ft to 2ft. The combined energy dips into the low hundreds, with readings like 104, 125, and 140. This is weak, sloppy stuff.

The weekend of August 22nd-23rd is no better – 1.0ft to 1ft from the SW or SSW, with onshore winds from the WSW at 9 mph. The combined energy creeps up a little on Sunday afternoon to 203, but still with poor conditions. It’s basically a lake out there.

Looking further out, we start to see a slight uptick in wave energy around Tuesday, August 25th, with 313 units of combined energy and a 2ft swell from the SW. The wind is still onshore, though, and the wave comment remains “marginal.” The best-looking window is Saturday, August 29th, where we get a 3ft SSW swell with a 17-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 418 – moderate at last. The morning wind is cross-onshore from the SSW at 6 mph, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Then Sunday, August 30th, morning offers a similar 3ft SSW swell, with cross-shore wind from the SSE at 6 mph, which is a little cleaner. Combined energy is 371. This is the standout of the entire forecast, but it’s still a far cry from epic. The swell direction is SSW, which is close to the optimum SW direction for this spot, helping a bit.

After that, the energy fades again into the first week of September, with poor conditions and tiny swell. Honestly, for a spot like Venice Pier that’s exposed and gets a lot of onshore wind, this is a typical flat spell. If you’re desperate, the mornings of August 29th and 30th are your best bet, but don’t expect much. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during the onshore afternoons.

Signing off, Rusty.
