The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s doing on with this stretch of coast.

Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a rough one for surfing. We’re looking at Venice Pier (Venice), and the swell just isn’t cooperating. The water temperature is sitting at 71°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, and it feels like bathwater.

We’re starting with the first sniff of a wave on Saturday the 18th, but it’s honestly a write-off. The swell is only 2ft from the SW, and the wind is on it from the same direction. It’s a classic “on-shore” mess, and the wave energy is weak (256). There’s nothing to ride.

Sunday the 19th through to Wednesday the 23rd is more of the same. Swell stays tiny, between 2ft and 2ft, mostly from the SSW or SW. The wind is either onshore or cross-onshore each morning and onshore each afternoon. It’s all poor surf conditions. The score of zilch tells you all you need to know.

Thursday the 24th morning shows a bit of a tease. The swell period jumps to 24 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell – and energy bumps up to moderate (559). But the swell height is still just 2ft from the SSW, and we have a cross-onshore wind from the SSE. It’s marginal, but those long-period lines will be super straight and closey at a beach break like this. Not your best bet.

Friday the 25th morning is probably the closest thing to a stand-out we get. The swell nudges up to 2ft from the SW with a long period of 21 seconds, and the energy is moderate (677). The wind is a light cross-on from the SSW, so it’s not completely blown out. It’s still only a marginal call, but if you’re desperate, that’s your window. Remember, those long-period swells are better for a point or reef, not this straight beach.

From Saturday the 26th all the way through to Sunday the 2nd, it’s a grind. The swell stays under 3ft, the energy dips back to weak to moderate, and the wind is mostly on or cross-onshore. The best you’ll get is a “marginal” rating, and more often than not it’s just “poor.” There’s no real gap with no recommendations, it’s just a long stretch of very average, small, choppy surf.

Honestly, if you’re set on getting wet, the morning of the 25th is your only real shot for a few crumbly, weak lines. Otherwise, the conditions here are looking more suitable for a kite than a paddle.

Rusty.
