Table - best surf conditions forecast for Venice Pier over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Venice Pier.
Honestly, straight up, this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a 16-day window that’s almost a total write-off for quality paddle surfing. The first real sniff of anything you’d call surfable doesn’t even show up until Friday, July 9th, and even then it’s a marginal call. You’re looking at a gap of a couple of days with nothing recommended right at the start.
The story for the whole period is small, weak, onshore wind-affected swell. The wave energy is pitiful, with values like 464 (weak) dropping all the way down to 112 (weak) by the second week. The swell direction is coming from the SSW and SW, but the problem is the wind is almost always on it or cross-onshore, keeping it choppy and messy. The period is long, bouncing between 15 and 19 seconds, so it’s a long-period groundswell, but with no size and bad wind, that doesn’t mean a thing for a beach break like this. At 3ft, it’s too small for anyone having fun.
The one day that stands out—and I mean barely—is Friday, July 17th in the morning. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, with a light westerly breeze just tickling the water. The swell is still tiny, only 1ft from the SW, but the wave energy bumps up a little to 159 (weak). The report calls it "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." That’s about as good as it gets here. For a beginner on a foamie, that glassy morning might actually be fun, but it’s not a stand-out by any stretch for anyone else. The water is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year at 67°F.
After that, it’s back to the same story: small, weak, and onshore. There’s a slight uptick in energy on the morning of Saturday, July 18th (366 – weak), but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not worth getting excited about.
For the whole 16 days, there’s no real stand-out session. The best you get is that glassy morning on the 17th, and that’s a “maybe” for a beginner. For everyone else, leave the board in the car and save the energy. The setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer given the persistent onshore wind and weak swell.
Rusty.
