The Lowdown

Right, let’s have a look at what’s happening for Quatro Ilhas.

Straight up, I’ve got to be honest with you – this is a painful outlook. The next 16 days are basically a write-off for any proper surf. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak swells and messy conditions. The consistency is listed as “inconsistent”, and the file backs that up. For the first week and a half, the swell is barely registering, with height mostly sitting below 2ft and energy values in the low teens to forties – weak stuff. The wind is all over the place, and when it is offshore, there’s just no wave to ride.

The entire period is plagued by “poor surf conditions” or “very ordinary” ratings. There’s a brief, slight lift on the afternoon of Thursday the 13th of August, where we see a 3ft swell from the SE with a period of 15 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, which usually means better shape, but the energy is moderate and the wind is a light cross-onshore, so it’s not going to be clean. The water temperature is sitting at 66°F, which is about average for the time of year, so at least a wetsuit isn’t going to be a shock.

After that, it’s back to tiny, weak pulses. The weekend of the 15th and 16th is a total dud. There is a faint glimmer on the morning of Tuesday the 18th of August, with a 4ft swell from the S, but the period is a super short 5 seconds, which is basically just wind chop with weak energy. The wind is offshore, which is a positive, but that period is a deal-breaker.

The only real standout, if you can call it that, is the afternoon of Wednesday the 12th of August. The swell is only 2ft from the ESE, but the wind goes glassy, and the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions”. The energy is still weak. For a spot that is sheltered and inconsistent, this is a rare window of clean, tiny surf. It’s not going to be a classic, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your best bet.

Honestly, this is a classic case of a blank run for the area. The whole 16-day window is a struggle. The breaks here just don’t have the exposure to grab the minimal swell that’s around. It’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
