The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about your local surf for the next couple of weeks.
It’s gonna be a bit of a mixed bag to start, with a lot of wind and swell that’s just not cooperating. The first few days are pretty rough, with messy cross and cross-onshore winds making a mess of things. The real magic starts to show around Sunday the 23rd, and there’s a couple of standout windows that are worth getting excited about.
The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no need to dig out the thickest rubber.
Our main spot, Prainha do Farol, is a bit inconsistent and can be tricky to get right, but when it lines up, it’s a gem. The best of the early action looks like Sunday morning, the 23rd. We’ve got clean, light offshore winds from the WSW, with a solid 7 ft swell from the S, and a period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 1424, so there’s plenty of push. This is excellent for experienced surfers, but the size and power will be a bit much for beginners.
Then Monday the 24th morning is a real beast. A big 10 ft S swell with a very long 16-second period, and light WSW winds keeping it glassy. The energy is through the roof at 5575, but here’s the catch – it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it might just be too much. The long period swell will be breaking fast and heavy, so point breaks and reef setups would handle it better, but that’s not what we’ve got here.
After that, Tuesday the 25th morning is another good one. The swell drops back to a clean 7 ft from the S, still with a 12-second period and a light cross-off breeze from the NNE. Energy is 1218, and it’s looking excellent for experienced surfers again. Wednesday the 26th morning is a bit smaller, with 4 ft from the SSE and a longer 14-second period, but still with that clean cross-off wind. It’s a smaller, cleaner option.
There’s a big gap after that, with a few days of poor conditions and small swell. The next flash of hope comes on Friday the 28th morning. Swell drops to 3 ft from the SSE, with a 12-second period, and the wind goes glassy from the WNW. The energy is a weak 222, but it’ll be clean and glassy – a good session for a longer board, but nothing to get too excited about.
Looking further out, Wednesday the 2nd of September morning shows a promising pulse. A 8 ft S swell with a short 7-second period, but light offshore winds from the WSW and clean conditions. Energy is 735, and it’s described as “very good.” The short period means it’ll be a bit less powerful and more walled up, but still fun.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is definitely Sunday the 23rd and Tuesday the 25th mornings. The Monday the 24th is a beast for experts only, and the 28th gives a small, glassy session. Keep your eyes on the forecast for that 2nd of September window, but it’s still a way off.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
