Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking at Prainha do Farol.
Right off the bat, the water is a chilly 60° – that’s nearly 6° colder than normal for this time of year, so it’s way colder than usual. Wrap up if you’re heading out.
The next few days are a mixed bag. We kick off Monday, the 6th of July morning with a clean little 2ft south-southeast swell, but it’s got a very long 18-second period. That’s classic groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a solid 711. It’s a bit long-period for a beach break—might break a bit straight—but with a light north wind and clean conditions, it’s worth a paddle on a longboard. That’s the best you’re gonna get early on.
The rest of Monday and Tuesday are rough. Swell bumps up but the wind goes onshore or cross-shore, and the period drops right off. Tuesday morning sees 6ft of short-period slop at 7 seconds – messy. Avoid it.
Wednesday, the morning of the 8th, is a little gem. 4ft from the south-southwest, period up to 9 seconds, and a light north-west offshore breeze. Clean as a whistle, combined energy of 510. Fun, manageable waves. Not a standout, but a solid small-wave session.
Thursday and Friday are small but clean in the mornings. Thursday has 3ft of east-southeast swell at 10 seconds, combined energy down to 261. Friday has 3ft from the east-southeast with a nice 12-second period (275 energy). Both mornings have light offshore winds. Again, nothing epic, but for a quiet surf, it’s fine.
Now, Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th get a bit more juice. Saturday morning: 5ft from the east-southeast, 13-second period, combined energy 697—but it’s rainy and cross-shore. Not great. Sunday the 12th morning has 4ft from the south-southeast with a 12-second period, but energy spikes to 1255 – that’s a lot of power in the water. Wind is light cross-shore. It’s just marginal. Sunday afternoon? 8ft of short-period south-southwest slop at 8 seconds, 1296 energy, but it’s just a messy, choppy wall. Not a good call.
The following week is mostly windy and poor until Thursday the 16th. That morning, finally, a standout: 8ft from the south-southwest, period of 8 seconds, but here’s the thing – it’s an offshore breeze and glassy conditions. Combined energy of 677. That’s clean, punchy beach break. Not for beginners, though – over 5ft, so it’ll be a handful. Experienced surfers should circle this one.
But the real highlight? Friday the 17th morning is the top dog in this whole outlook. 8ft of south swell with a very long 13-second period, and a light offshore wind from the west-southwest. Clean, powerful, and the combined energy is a whopping 1751. That’s strong wave energy. This is proper groundswell. It’s packing a punch—only for experienced surfers. If that swell direction matches the optimum south swell for this spot, it’ll be the session of the window. A bit of a wait, but worth it.
Saturday the 18th morning is glassy again, with 5ft south swell at 12 seconds, calm wind, and 698 energy. Clean, strong, and user-friendly for those with a bit of experience.
After that, the last couple days settle back to smaller, cleaner waves in the 3ft to 5ft range with south swell, very long periods, good for logs or mids, nothing too exciting.
Overall, the best window is the 16th to 18th of July, with the 17th morning taking the crown. The first week is mostly small and clean, but nothing to write home about. Stay patient.
Rusty.
