The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break down the surf for Prainha do Farol for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week is a total washout. Tiny, weak waves and nothin’ worth paddling for. The water temperature is a frigid 59°, which is a massive 6° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s straight-up abnormal, so bring a thick suit.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Wednesday, July 22nd in the morning. A south swell finally shows up at 5ft, with a period of 8 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (268), and the wind is clean, blowing cross-off from the WSW at 9 mph. It’s not a classic, but it’s a start. The afternoon gets a bit messy with cross-shore wind.
Thursday, July 23rd is a much better call. The morning is glassy – dead calm from the north at 3 mph – with a clean 4ft, 10-second south swell. Energy is building nicely (303). The afternoon stays just as good, with glassy conditions and a 4ft, 9-second swell (359). This is your best bet for the early part of the run: decent size, clean faces, and the wind is off. Get on it.
Friday, July 25th in the morning is the real standout. We’re lookin’ at a 5ft south swell with a 10-second period, and the wave energy is roarin’ at 892. The wind is a light cross-off from the NNE at 3 mph, keeping the surface glassy. This is the pick of the whole forecast. The swell is solid, the conditions are perfect, and the energy is strong. Crowds are always a possibility here, so you’ll want to be an early bird.
Looking further out, Saturday, July 26th morning is promising with a glassy 3ft, 12-second south swell (509 energy), but it’s a step down in size. Then Thursday, July 31st afternoon sees a massive 10ft, 11-second SSW swell (2171 energy), but the word is it’s just too big for this break. That’s expert-only, and with a cross-onshore wind, it’s probably not worth the hassle.
So, there’s a couple of gems in the second week, especially the 25th. The first week is a total dud, so don’t rush.
Rusty.
