The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on the next few weeks. We’re looking at Prainha do Farol, and it’s a bit of a slow-burner, but there’s some real magic waiting for us if we’re patient.
For the first few days, it’s a tough watch. We’ve got tiny, weak swells coming in from the south, all under 3.3 ft, with combined energy barely ticking over (31 down to 9). The wind is mostly cross-off or cross-on, but the waves just don’t have any push. It’s a real struggle until Thursday, the 23rd of July.
Thursday morning the 23rd is when things start to wake up. The swell bumps up to 5.2 ft from the SSE, with a combined energy of 338 (moderate), and we’ve got a clean, cross-off wind. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a windswell, but it’s rideable. The real standout, though, is Friday the 24th of July. The morning delivers 4.9 ft from the SE, and the wind is dead glassy. That’s the kind of morning you call in sick for. The wave energy is solid (326), and it’s going to be as clean as it gets.
Saturday the 25th holds in there with 3.6 ft and clean conditions, but the wind picks up in the afternoon. Then we get a bit of a lull over the weekend and into the start of the next week. The swell drops back under 3.3 ft, and while the wind is okay, the energy is low.
But hold on to your board, because the real fireworks are coming. On Thursday the 30th of July, the swell jumps to 8.2 ft from the SSW. That’s expert territory, and the wind is light and cross-shore, so it’s going to be a heavy, powerful day. The afternoon of the 30th is a beauty, though: 6.2 ft from the S, glassy, and the energy is pumping (540). That’s a top-tier session.
But the absolute best of the whole run is Saturday the 1st of August. We’re talking 6.9 ft of pure, long-period groundswell from the S, with a period of 14 seconds and a massive combined energy of 1871. The wind is dead calm, glassy. That is a serious, powerful swell. It’s a point break or reef sort of wave, so it’ll be lined up and pushing through. This one is for the experienced crew – it’s too big for beginners. The Sunday the 2nd keeps it going with 6.2 ft from the S and a 15-second period (very long period), but the wind is more cross-shore, so a little less perfect than Saturday.
The waves around here don’t stay flat for long, and this forecast proves it. We’ve got a few scrappy days, but the payoff at the end of July and start of August is seriously exciting. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
