The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Prainha do Farol are a tough watch. We’ve got a massive gap of almost nothing, then a couple of promising windows for the experienced crew, but mostly it’s a battle with wind and messy conditions. The water temp is sitting around 66°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
First up, there’s literally nothing for the first few days. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are a write-off – tiny 1ft to 3ft south-southwest swell, short period, and cross/onshore winds. You’re looking at 11 units of energy on the 19th, just weak. The wind cranks up to 16 mph on Thursday, making it a total mess.
Friday the 21st morning is a bit better for the desperate – 5ft from the SSW at 7 seconds, clean with a cross-offshore breeze from the WSW at 19 mph. But the afternoon blows out with a 10ft, 8-second south-southwest swell and a strong 22 mph cross-onshore. That’s 1123 units of energy but it’s lumpy and ugly – more of a kite session than a surf.
We get a bit of a pulse on Saturday the 22nd morning, 7ft south swell at 9 seconds, but still cross-shore wind at 12 mph. It’s marginal. The afternoon goes even worse. Sunday the 23rd morning sees 6ft south swell at 11 seconds, 1004 units of energy, with a gentle cross-shore. It’s okay, but not great.
Now, the standout window is Monday the 24th morning. Glassy 6 mph ENE wind, 8ft south swell at 13 seconds – that’s a serious groundswell with 3538 units of energy. This is for experienced surfers only, as it’s big and the long period will make it power up. The south direction is perfect for the exposure. It’s clean, but expect it to be a bit walled up at a beach break. Monday afternoon is even bigger at 10ft, but the wind goes cross-shore and it’s too much for this spot.
Tuesday the 25th morning is another good look – 7ft south swell at 13 seconds, clean with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE at 6 mph. 1339 units of energy. Again, for the experts. The rest of the week tapers off: Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th have 4ft to 4ft south/southeast swell, clean mornings, but small.
Then we hit another flat spell. From Friday the 28th through to the end of the forecast on September 3rd, it’s tiny, weak, and onshore. The swell drops to 1ft to 2ft, energy is under 100, and it’s choppy. A few glassy moments on Sunday the 30th afternoon with 7ft east-southeast swell, but it’s short-period and the rest of the time it’s a mess.
So, the only real call is Monday the 24th morning for the experienced crew – big, clean south groundswell. Tuesday the 25th morning is a solid backup. Everything else is a wait-and-see. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
