The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’ve got a 16-day window staring at us, and for the vast majority of it, there’s just nothing doing. The first real chance of a wave worth paddling for doesn’t even show up until the 30th of August. That’s a solid 12-day gap of flat or junk conditions right from the start.
Point o Rocks is a point break that’s already inconsistent, and it’s living up to that reputation. For the first week and a half, it’s all tiny swell, weak energy (single-digit and low double-digit values in the 2 to 32 range), and the wind is either cross-on or onshore, chopping everything to bits. The swell is barely 2 ft, with a period of just 4 to 5 seconds – that’s windswell slop, not proper surf. The only tiny bright spot in that whole stretch is a brief moment on the 29th of August morning when the wind goes glassy, but the swell is still only 0.7 ft, so it’s a flat, clean mirror. Not worth a paddle.
The best we’ve got on offer is the afternoon of the 30th of August. The swell bumps up to 2 ft from the NW, with a period of 4 seconds – still short-period, but the energy ticks up a little to 19. The wind is cross-on, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy, but compared to the rest of the run, it’s the most size we see. Then the 31st of August morning actually looks like the standout: 3 ft from the NW, period 4 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-off from the ESE, which should keep it clean. The energy is up to 24. It’s still small, and with that short period, it’ll be a bit dumpy, but it’s the best combo of clean conditions and the most swell we’ll get. The 31st afternoon sees a touch more energy (32) and 3 ft, but the wind swings onshore, so it’ll be messy.
After that, it fades again into the first days of September with tiny, weak energy. Honestly, for a spot that’s already inconsistent, this is a pretty blank run. It’s not abnormal for the area, but it’s a long wait for very little payoff. If you’re desperate, the 31st of August morning is the pick – but keep expectations low.
Rusty.
