The Lowdown
What’s up, crew? Rusty here, looking at the Popoyo forecast. It’s a weird one—there’s some good, long-period swell on the horizon, but for the first week and a half, the wind is just howling. That strong offshore breeze keeps the surface clean, but it’s blowing so hard it’s a nightmare to get into the waves. The swell is tiny, only 1ft to 3ft of SSW-SW groundswell, with a period of 12 to 16 seconds—so there’s quality there, but not enough size to fight the wind. The energy is weak, so you’ll be paddling hard for nothing. From Thursday the 16th through the 23rd, I’d say save your energy.
Then, around Friday the 24th, the wind starts to let up to a fresh breeze, and the swell begins to build. By Saturday the 25th, we’re looking at a 3ft SW groundswell with a long 21-second period, and the energy is strong. Wind is offshore from the ENE, so it’ll be clean, but still a bit of a push. This is your first real chance.
The standout, no doubt, is Sunday the 26th. The wind drops to a light breeze, making it glassy and clean. The swell is 4ft from the SW, with a 19-second period, and the energy is strong. It’s not huge, but the conditions will be about as good as it gets. Sunday afternoon is even lighter. That’s your window.
Into the next week, Monday the 27th to Wednesday the 29th, we’ve got a solid 5ft to 5ft SW swell, with periods of 17-18 seconds. The energy is pumping. The wind is cross-offshore from the E, so it’s clean but not as perfect as Sunday. This is getting into intermediate-to-expert territory, as it’s a bit chunky. That long-period SW groundswell will line up beautifully at the reef. Expect some company, as it’s a spot that gets busy.
After that, the energy fades and the wind picks up again, with the 31st looking poor.
Rusty out.
