The Lowdown
Alright, folks. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this 16-day window for Playa Tamarindo is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak swell that’s just not going to give us much to work with. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off, with the rating staying low.
The only real glimmer of light comes in the second week, around the 14th of August. That Friday morning, we finally see a pulse of SW groundswell push up to 3 ft with a very long period of 18 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (588), and the wind is a fresh offshore, so it’ll be clean. However, the water temp is a balmy 84°F, which is about average for this time of year. This is a point break, so that long period swell will wrap in nicely, but don’t expect it to be a day for the beginners — it’s still a solid swell. The crowds are a possibility here, so be ready to share.
The next morning, Saturday the 15th, is a similar story. Swell is a touch bigger at 4 ft, but the period drops to 16 seconds and the energy is very strong (781). The offshore wind is strong, making it clean but hard to paddle into. This is stepping into expert territory. After that, it fades back into the marginal zone.
Honestly, for the rest of the 16 days, we’re looking at tiny 1 ft to 3 ft SW swell and fresh to strong breezes. It’s clean, but there’s just no power in the water.
