Punta Quilla Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you: this forecast is a tough one. For the next week or so, it’s going to be a real grind. We’ve got some solid, long-period SW groundswell trying to push through, but the energy is just weak to moderate – think combined energy values hanging around the 100s to low 400s (118 – 413). The problem is, for a spot as exposed as Punta Quilla, that clean, offshore ENE wind is blowing way too hard, often a strong breeze. When you’ve got 19 to 28 mph offshore winds and a tiny 1 ft to 2 ft swell, it’s going to be a blown-out, bumpy mess. The wave comment keeps saying “poor surf conditions,” and that’s the truth. You’ll be fighting the wind more than riding the wave.

Now, a glimmer of hope. Towards the end of the run, things start to look a bit more interesting. The swell starts to bump up, and the water temp is sitting at a pleasant 84°F, which is about average for this time of year.

Let’s talk about a couple of windows that could actually be worth the wait.

First, look at Thursday, August 14th. The morning has a risk of thunderstorms, but the wind is a strong 25 mph offshore from the ENE. The swell kicks up to 3 ft from the SW with a very long 19-second period. The combined energy jumps to 527 (moderate). For the afternoon, the wind swings cross-off, the swell hits 3 ft with an 18-second period, and the energy surges to a strong 721. This is a window where the size and that long-period power could start to overcome the wind, especially if you find a sheltered bank. The clean texture from the cross-off wind will help. It's not perfect, but it's the first sign of life.

Then, keep your eyes on the following week. Thursday, August 20th morning looks like a potential standout. We’ve got a 4 ft SW swell with a 17-second period. The combined energy hits a strong 766. The wind is a fresh 22 mph offshore from the NE. That’s a lot of wind, but a 4 ft groundswell with that much energy behind it can handle it better. The wave comment actually gives this a score of 2 out of 10, which is the highest in the whole outlook. It’s described as “marginal surf forecast,” but for this run, that’s a relative win. This will be a powerful, clean, but very peaky wave best left for the experienced crew. It’s a long-range call, so keep your fingers crossed the forecasts hold.

Don’t expect any magic here. The biggest problem is the constant, brutal wind. The first week is a write-off. The second week offers a couple of days where the swell finally gets big enough and the energy strong enough to make it worth a look, especially if you’re an expert on a bigger board. If the wind doesn’t ease, this setup might honestly be more fun for the kite crew than us paddle surfers.

That’s the reality of it. Keep checking, because forecasts can change, but as it stands, you’ve got a long, frustrating wait for a couple of *maybe* sessions.
