The Lowdown

Alright, grab your board and listen up. This is Rusty, and I’m breaking down the next 16 days for us here at San Juan del Sur.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week is a bit of a grind. We’ve got some swell, but it’s small and the conditions are just not coming together for a proper session. From Sunday the 30th of August right through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, the waves are hovering around 2ft to 4ft from the SW. The wind is mostly cross-off from the ENE, which keeps the surface clean, but the wave energy is just too weak to get excited about (combined energy readings from 259 to 612). It’s the kind of stuff that’ll have you paddling around more than surfing.

We've got a bit of a gap here with no real standout sessions, but stick with me. The water temperature is sitting at a comfortable 84°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Now, the first real glimmer of hope shows up on Friday the 4th of September. The morning session sees a jump in quality with a 4ft SW groundswell (17-second period) and a clean offshore wind from the ENE at 30 km/h. The combined energy is ramping up to 801, which is a solid sign of life. This is your best bet for the first week – clean, offshore conditions and a bit of push from the swell.

The standout of the entire outlook, however, is shaping up for Saturday the 5th of September. The morning will see 5ft of SW groundswell with a 16-second period, and again, we’ve got that sweet offshore wind from the ENE at 30 km/h. The combined energy hits 1012, which is a solid moderate reading. This is the peak of the run – clean, punchy, and a legit window for a good session. The afternoon holds up too, but the wind shifts to cross-off, so get out early.

After that, the swell slowly fades through the second week, but we get some sneaky good mornings. The 11th of September has a very promising Friday morning: 4ft SW swell, 16-second period, and a light breeze from the east at 10 km/h. The conditions are set to be excellent, with a combined energy of 582. The only catch is that the afternoon wind swings to a cross-on from the SSW, turning it choppy, so it’s a morning-only window.

The 12th of September follows a similar pattern – a good morning with 3ft SW swell and light winds, but the afternoon gets ruined by a cross-on and thunderstorms. The 13th of September offers a final clean morning with 2ft SW swell, but by then the energy is dropping off.

Honestly, for the best of the best, set your alarm for Saturday the 5th of September. That morning is the one. The long-period groundswell and offshore wind will have San Juan del Sur looking clean and lined up. The only real concern is that with a 16-second period, the sets might be a bit fat on the beach breaks, but the offshore wind should help hold them up.

Rusty.
