The Lowdown

Alright, I’ll level with ya – the next couple of weeks around Perranuthnoe are looking pretty flat and frustrating for the most part. There is only one brief window that stands out as worth paddling out, and that’s flying under the radar.

The first glimmer of hope comes on Thursday the 21st of August in the morning, but it's more of a tease than anything serious. Swell is from the WNW at 6ft with a 9-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore from the NNW at 15 mph, so the surface should be clean. But honestly, wave quality is only marginal, with moderate wave energy (512) – it’s really just for the diehards who need a paddle. By the afternoon the swell drops to 4ft and it’s a bit weak for the effort.

Now, the standout – and I mean the only real standout – is Saturday the 22nd of August. It’s not big, but it’s about as clean as it’ll get in this run. Saturday morning sees the wind shifting to light offshore from the NE at just 3 mph, with tiny 2ft windswell from the west at 6 seconds. The energy is low (66), but the conditions are glassy, clean, and the water at Perranuthnoe is a touch warmer than normal at 66°F. This is a beginner-friendly wave, small and gentle, and because it’s a fairly consistent spot exposed to SW swells, you’ll get the odd little lump. Afternoon stays clean with the same tiny size.

Heads up though – after that, it goes dead. From Sunday the 23rd of August right through to Sunday the 30th of August, the swell drops to knee-high or below, with most days showing 0.7ft to 1ft and very weak energy (often in the single digits or low tens). The wind stays cross-off or offshore, so it’s not choppy, but there’s just nothing to surf. Even the long-period groundswells on the 23rd and 24th (14 seconds!) don’t deliver any size – you’d be floating with zero push.

So the bottom line: if you’re desperate for a splash, hit Saturday the 22nd for a clean, tiny session. Otherwise, the whole 16-day window is more suited to a beach walk than a surf. It’s a quiet spell, but in this area, that’s not unusual – forecasts can flip.

Rusty.
