The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, let's see what's cooking.
First up, I gotta be straight with you. For the next week and a half, it's flat. Proper flat. We're talking about a stretch from the 17th of July all the way through to the 28th of July where the swell is barely a whisper. The combined energy is a pathetic 10 or less most days, just a tiny ripple. It's not worth paddling out for. That's a solid 11-day gap of nothing. You'd be better off cleaning the wax off your board.
Now, about Whitsand Bay and Tregantle. You know the water temp is sitting at 67°F right now, which is a whopping 6°F above normal. That's very unusual, it's like a lukewarm bath. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, and it's just ugly. The first hint of life shows up on the 29th of July, Wednesday afternoon. The wind swings offshore from the NNW at 6 mph, and we get a 7 ft swell from the WSW. That's a big jump to 405 in the energy department, but it's still a bit raw.
Alright, here's the one. The standout. Thursday, the 30th of July. This is the session you circle on the calendar. Early morning, the wind is glassy, dead calm from the ESE at 3 mph. The swell is a solid 8 ft from the WSW with a period of 12 seconds, giving the water a massive energy hit of 1366. That's strong, powerful groundswell. For you locals, that's a big day. Now, that 8 ft is in the "experts only" zone, so if you're a beginner, sit this one out. The long 12-second period means the sets will have some gaps, making the paddle out manageable, but at a beach break, that long period can make the waves stand up a bit too straight. It’ll be a more forgiving wave at the points or reefs than just out in the sand. The afternoon holds decent size at 6 ft, but the wind goes cross-on from the south, which will mess up the surface a little. The morning is the magic window.
Friday the 31st of July morning, the wind is offshore again from the ENE at 12 mph, but the swell has dropped to 3 ft with a combined energy of 156. It's clean, but small. Then it goes glassy again in the afternoon, but with almost no energy at 24. After that, it's back to small, choppy junk for the start of August.
So, if you're holding out, the clear winner is the morning of the 30th of July at Whitsand Bay. That's the one. The rest of the week is a long wait for that one clean, powerful window.
