Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whitsand Bay and Tregantle over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve taken a good hard look at what’s on the table for our little slice of coast, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. We’re looking at Whitsand Bay and Tregantle, and honestly, this is a classic example of summer flatness setting in. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any proper surf.
Starting off, Thursday the 9th is a real kick in the teeth. We’ve got Thursday morning with glassy conditions from the SE at just 3 mph, and the water is a balmy 64°, which feels much warmer than normal for this time of year. But don’t let that fool you – the swell is practically non-existent at a measly 0.7 ft from the west with a weak energy reading (11). The swell period is 10 seconds, which is a bit of a tease, but there’s just no power behind it. Friday the 10th is more of the same – 1 ft from the WSW, still weak (23). The cross-off wind from the ESE will make it look clean, but you’ll be floating around doing nothing.
Saturday the 11th through to Wednesday the 16th is a dead zone. The swell drops to 0.3 ft for days on end, with energy readings barely scraping into double digits. The wind is mostly howling out of the east at 19 to 28 mph, which is a strong breeze to fresh breeze. It’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. This setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if you ask me.
We see a tiny bump on Thursday the 16th afternoon – a 2 ft, 5-second windswell from the SW (21), but it’s accompanied by moderate rain and a NW wind at 12 mph putting a cross-chop on it. Not worth paddling for. Friday the 17th is the same story: 2 ft from the SSW, a 5-second period, and the combined energy finally climbs to a moderate 43, but the wind is on it again.
The best of a bad bunch comes on Saturday the 18th. We’ve got a glassy morning with a 1 ft swell from the SW, and the wind goes dead calm. The period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s not going to be anything special, but it’ll be the cleanest wave of the entire outlook. The downside is this spot is inconsistent, so you might be waiting a while for a set. It’s also often crowded, and with nothing else on offer, expect company. Monday the 20th afternoon sees the biggest number of the run: 3 ft from the WSW with a 6-second period and a combined energy of 50 (moderate). The NNW wind at 16 mph is cross-off, making it clean. For anyone desperate, that’s the pick of the second week, but it’s a short-period, weak windswell.
Everything after that trails off into the same pattern of tiny, weak, or wind-affected surf right through to Friday the 24th. There is nothing here that gets me excited. It’s a full 16-day lull.
Stay patient, lads. It tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
