Alright, let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’d love to tell you there’s a proper swell on the way, but we’re looking at a pretty quiet stretch here. The sea's basically been on a flat spell right from the start and there’s very little action to get excited about. Whitsand Bay and Tregantle is the only spot to check and it’s in Cornwall, a classic exposed beach-and-reef setup that wants a proper SW swell to work.
Right now for Tuesday morning we’ve got tiny 0.7 ft from the west with a period of 9 seconds, and a cross-on breeze blowing at 6 mph. That’s about as flat as it gets and the wave energy reading is just 9 (weak). It’s a no-go.
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th keep the same story – the swell barely tickles 0.7 ft, but at least there are some glassy windows on Thursday morning with a light SE breeze, so it’s clean if you’re just floating around. Looks pretty, but you won’t be catching much.
By Friday the 10th we see a slight bump – 1 ft from the west, period still a weak 9 seconds, but we get a clean cross-off wind from the east. Wave energy climbs a touch to 21 (weak). It’s still tiny, but cleaner if you’ve got a log.
After that, it gets weird – from Saturday the 11th through to midweek, the swell drops to 0.3 ft but with some surprisingly long periods reaching 17 to 19 seconds. That’s groundswell energy, but it’s just not showing much height. Winds are strong cross-off, gusting 25–31 mph, and honestly, with those conditions and the beach setup, it looks more promising for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Wave energy stays weak, peaking at 23.
Things don’t really pick up until Friday the 17th when we see a small pulse – 3 ft from the SW with a period of 7 seconds and an onshore breeze. Wave energy hits 79 (still weak). It’s choppy and junky.
Saturday the 18th offers 2 ft, period 6–7 seconds, light cross-shore winds, but again nothing special. Then from Sunday the 19th onwards we’re back to tiny 0.7 ft to 1 ft with long flat spells between.
There’s no standout day in this whole 16-day window. The really frustrating part is the lack of any proper pulse – we just don’t get the size or the direction to line up. The water temperature is 63°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year.
In short: if you really need saltwater, bring the biggest board you own and expect to work hard for the tiniest dribbles. Better to wait for the next proper system to push through. The longer-range stuff on the 17th and 18th is worth a casual glance, but that’s about as hopeful as I can get.
Rusty.
