The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got for Whitsand Bay and Tregantle over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one.
Right off the bat, the water is a wild 67°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, and you’ll feel it if you’re in a spring suit.
The problem is, for the first week and a half, there’s just nothing doing. We’re looking at a long, dry gap from now all the way through to around the 24th of July with zero surf worth paddling out for. Swell heights are stuck below 1ft with combined wave energy barely ticking over (between 1 and 28). It’s flat, simple as that. The winds are mostly cross-off or light, so it’s clean, but you need water moving to surf. This stretch is a total write-off.
Then, around Friday the 24th of July, we get a tiny pulse – 1ft to 2ft from the SSW, but the period is short (4-6 seconds) and the energy is still weak (10-16). It’s not enough to get excited about. Saturday the 25th of July offers a glimpse of hope with a glassy 1ft to 2ft from the WSW, and the energy creeps up to 22 (still very weak). It’s the cleanest window, but you’ll be fighting for scraps on a longboard. The problem is, this break is inconsistent, and when it's this small, it rarely breaks properly.
Things finally start to move on the 27th of July. We see a moderate bump to 3ft from the WSW on Monday morning, with energy hitting 88 – still weak, but a step up. The wind is a fresh cross-onshore though, so it’ll be lumpy and hard work. That’s not our time.
The real standout, and I mean the only one in this whole outlook, is on Tuesday the 28th of July. Swell jumps to 5ft from the S, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is 182, which is moderate – finally some push. The wind is a moderate cross-onshore in the morning, and by the afternoon it’s onshore from the SW with a solid 6ft of swell and energy hitting 351. This is expert territory (over 5ft), and with the short period and onshore wind, it’s going to be a messy, powerful closeout at a beach setup. This is more of a kite-surfing proposition than a clean paddle session. If you’re an experienced surfer and you don’t mind the chop, Tuesday afternoon could offer some heavy, roping waves, but don’t expect any shape.
Wednesday the 29th holds similar size (5ft) but stays onshore and windy. It’s not going to clean up.
So, to wrap it up: the first 10 days are a total flat spell. The only shot at anything remotely surfable is around the 28th, and even then it’s a rough, onshore, expert-only mess. Because Whitsand is inconsistent, this kind of blank run isn't too surprising. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d be looking at other plans.
Stay salty,
Rusty
