The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Been staring at the charts for this stretch and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run for the waves. The swell window is just not cooperating for us at Whitsand Bay and Tregantle. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window here, but the first two weeks are basically a write-off for any decent surf. You’re looking at a long gap of flat, tiny conditions with next to no energy.
Starting Monday the 13th of July, it’s tiny. We’re talking 0.3ft of weak, short-period swell from the SW, with a combined energy of just 23 – that’s barely a ripple. The wind is a stiff cross-offshore, which would normally be great for cleaning it up, but there’s nothing to clean. The water is a whopping 66°, which is 6° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, almost like a warm bath. This flat spell just drags on and on. Tuesday the 14th through Thursday the 16th is more of the same: 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with cross-offshore winds keeping the surface clean but the swell totally absent. The combined energy dips into single digits on the 16th – just 4 (4).
Friday the 17th offers a tiny glimmer, with a 1.0ft to 1ft bump from the SW, but the period is a super short 6 seconds, so there’s no push. The wind swings onshore on Friday afternoon, so it’s messy. The whole weekend of the 18th and 19th is back to 0.3ft with a mix of glassy conditions and gentle cross-onshore breezes – still no real swell. The combined energy for most of these days is in the single digits or low teens, which is just pathetic.
We finally see a tiny pulse of energy on Saturday the 25th of July. The swell picks up to 2ft from the WSW, with the combined energy hitting 82 – still weak, but it’s something. The problem is the wind is howling onshore from the WSW at 25 mph, turning it into a choppy mess. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one.
The only spot that even comes close to being worth a look is Whitsand Bay and Tregantle itself. Looking at the very end of the run, we see a bit of hope. On Tuesday the 28th of July, the swell finally bumps up to 5ft from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 233 – that’s moderate wave energy. The wind in the morning is light from the SW, but it’s onshore. This is classed as a “marginal surf forecast.” It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the only time in the whole 16 days where there’s enough size to even think about a paddle. The breaks at Whitsand Bay and Tregantle are beginner-plus and inconsistent, so this could be a small window of opportunity for someone who just wants to get wet. If you’re desperate, that’s your best bet. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
