Alright, grab your cuppa, let's have a look at what's on the cards.
Mate, I’m gonna be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’ve got a proper long dry spell here on our hands for Whitsand Bay and Tregantle. The first two weeks of the forecast are a write-off. From Friday the 10th of July all the way through to late on Wednesday the 23rd of July, the swell is tiny, anemic, or just non-existent. We’re talking knee-high dribble at best, with a few bigger pulses giving us nothing but weak, crumbly energy. The combined energy levels are often in the single digits or low twenties (6-28), which tells you just how limp it is. There’s plenty of strong east winds in there too, keeping things tidy but with no push whatsoever. You’re better off finding a rockpool to sit in.
Now, things finally start to look interesting as we head into the end of the month. On Friday the 24th of July, the swell starts to show up properly. We’ve got a solid 5ft of new groundswell coming from the southwest. The period is a little short at 6-7 seconds for the first day, but it pulls up to a much nicer 9 seconds by Saturday morning. The real standout here, and I mean the only one worth getting excited about, is the Saturday 25th of July morning session. We’ve got clean conditions with a cross-offshore wind from the WNW, and the swell is sitting at a solid 6ft from the WSW. The combined energy hits a whopping 639 – that’s a proper slug of power. That said, it’s an exposed beach break, and with a period under 10 seconds, the shape might not be the classic Cornwall point break perfection. It will be fat, rampy and a bit lumpy, but the size and the wind make it the only game in town. The water is feeling like a bathtub at roughly 64°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s also worth noting this spot can get crowded, so be ready to share.
A word of caution: with the swell over 5ft and a decent cross-shore wind, this is more of an intermediate to expert wave. Beginners might find it a bit of a handful.
So, to sum it up: two weeks of nothing, then one good, punchy Saturday morning. It’s not a classic run, but it’s better than a blank forecast. Keep your eyes peeled, the forecasts can change.
Rusty.
