The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you—this is a rough stretch for the South East Cornwall coast. We're looking at a long, quiet spell, so if you're itching for a paddle, you might need to find something else to do for a while.
The whole 16-day window is a bit of a bust. The first real surfable energy doesn't show up until right at the very end. For the first week and a half, we're looking at tiny, weak waves and poor conditions. It's a desert out there. The water’s running at about 66°, which is a good 5° warmer than normal for July—feels like a bath, but it won't make the waves any bigger.
The only spot on the radar is Whitsand Bay and Tregantle. It's an exposed beach break, but it's inconsistent and even when it's working, it's better for beginners. The crowds can be a problem here too. For the first week and a half, the swell is tiny (0.3 ft to 1 ft), with a sloppy, short-period wind swell and low energy (1 to 12). The wind is all over the place, and while we get a few glassy mornings (like Saturday the 18th and Monday the 20th), there's just no wave to ride.
We finally get a glimmer of hope on the 29th of July. The swell tries to push up to 3 ft from the SW, but it's still a short period and the energy is weak (41 and 47). The wind is cross-onshore, so it's not clean. It's a step up from flat, but not worth getting excited about.
The only real event in the whole outlook comes on the 30th and 31st of July. The swell builds from the WSW, with a period that stretches to 12-13 seconds. That's a bit more groundswell character. The energy kicks up to a moderate 101 on the 30th morning, and then 112 on the 31st afternoon, with the swell height hitting 4 ft. The problem is the wind. It's strong onshore (SW) and kicking up a chop, with a fresh breeze on the 30th and a strong breeze on the 31st. This is a classic case of a messy, wind-blown beach break. It's going to be a crumbly, lumpy mess. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
If you're an expert, you might be able to find something on the 31st afternoon, but it won't be pretty. The truth is, this is a long stretch of nothing. For a spot like this, a blank run is more normal, but forecasts can change. For now, keep the board in the car.
Rusty.
