The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, giving you the forecast for Whitsand Bay and Tregantle in feet and Fahrenheit. The next couple of weeks are pretty grim, so don't get your hopes up.
The water is a balmy 66°F, which is a massive 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual, like swimming in a warm bath.
The entire 16-day forecast is a struggle. From Wednesday the 15th of July right through to Tuesday the 28th of July, the swell is tiny. We’re looking at 0.3ft to 0.7ft waves with almost no energy. The combined energy is usually just 1 to 26 (weak energy). It’s not surfable. There’s a long gap of nearly two weeks where there’s nothing to recommend.
The only faint glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning will see a tiny 2ft swell from the WSW, with a period of just 4 seconds. That’s short period, windswell, and it’s weak with combined energy of 14 (weak energy). The wind is light offshore from the NNE, which will keep it clean, but it’s really only for a beginner on a foamie. The afternoon picks up a touch to 3ft from the same direction, and the wind swings to a light offshore from the NE. Still, the period is a short 4 seconds, so it’ll be lumpy and weak, with combined energy of 22 (weak energy). This spot is inconsistent and rarely breaks, so this tiny window is the best on offer.
Then Thursday the 30th of July, the swell stays at 3ft but the wind turns cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The energy picks up a bit to 53 (moderate energy), but the period is still only 6 seconds, so you’re looking at a bumpy, blown-out mess. Not worth it.
Given the size (3ft is nothing) and the poor quality, there’s nothing here for anyone other than a total beginner. With the wind and tiny swell, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s normal. Forecasts can change, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
