Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whitsand Bay and Tregantle over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here again, but for those of you who think in feet and miles. Let’s break it down.
Fair warning: the next week and a half is a desert for surf. Water temps are 64°F, which is much warmer than normal for July, so fine for a dip, but no waves.
Starting Saturday, 11 July, it’s flat – 0.3ft dribble from the south with a light cross-off breeze, clean but totally useless. The energy is a weak 12.
This flatness stretches all the way through to Friday, 17 July. The only blip is Friday afternoon, which sees a short, choppy 3ft (5 seconds) from the southwest with a moderate cross-onshore wind and energy of 61. It’s messy and not worth the drive.
Saturday 18 July through Monday 20 July remain flat and weak.
Tuesday 21 July brings a sloppy 4ft (5 seconds) from the west-southwest in the afternoon with fresh cross-onshore wind and lumpy conditions (energy 67). Still poor.
The real turn comes on Friday 24 July. The afternoon brings a clean, 4ft (5 seconds) southwest swell with a strong cross-off wind from the north-northwest, and energy jumps to 118. It’s small but clean – the first decent window.
But the one to mark on your calendar is Saturday 25 July. A 5ft west-southwest swell with a period of 9 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The energy is strong at 405. The wind is a moderate cross-onshore in the morning and onshore later, so it’ll be choppy, but that’s still the best wave of the whole outlook. It’s a bit too big for beginners, but fun for intermediates and playful for experts. The longer period gives it shape and power.
After Saturday, Sunday 26 July drops back to 3-2ft with strong onshore wind, so that’s the end of it.
So, the bottom line: a long, flat wait, but Saturday 25 July is a genuine standout. That 5ft southwest groundswell is the one. The rest of the time, you’re better off swimming or checking the tides.
Rusty.
