The Lowdown
Alright, let's get this straight. It’s a pretty bleak run coming up for a couple of weeks. We’ve got a stretch of mostly poor surf conditions that hang around for a long time. The first real whisper of something worthwhile doesn’t show up until Saturday, the 29th of August, so that’s a good ten days or more of waiting for scraps.
First up, Whitsand Bay and Tregantle (Whitsand-Bay-and-Tregantle). Honestly, it’s a rough start. Through this week and into the next, we’re dealing with tiny, weak swell, mostly under 3ft, and wind that’s cross-on or onshore from the west or southwest nearly every day. The water is currently a very warm 66°F – that’s 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year, which is notable.
The only real glimmer in the first week is Friday morning, the 21st of August. It’s tiny, just 1ft from the WSW with a 9-second period, but the wind is a light easterly, making it clean. That’s a mellow longboard day at best. The combined swell energy is only 42, which is weak.
Then we get a long gap. Nothing but poor conditions and onshore winds until we hit Saturday, the 29th of August. That’s the standout window. Saturday morning brings a decent 7ft swell from the WSW, with a 9-second period, and a light NNW cross-offshore wind, making it clean. The combined energy jumps right up to 1133 – strong. That’s the real deal, but with the swell over 7ft, it’s for experienced surfers only. It’ll be big, powerful, and probably a bit of a paddle.
That afternoon it drops back down to 4ft, but the wind swings to a fresh cross-shore, so it won't be as clean.
After that, Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st look pretty blown out again with strong onshore winds. Then, on Tuesday the 1st of September, we see another pulse. The morning shows a big 8ft swell from the west, with a very long 12-second period and the combined energy is massive at 2158. But, and it’s a big but, it’s accompanied by onshore winds. That’s going to be a messy, powerful close-out for experts only.
So, for the whole run, the only two proper windows are the morning of Saturday the 29th of August and, if you’re feeling brave, the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September, but the wind is a killer on that second one. For the rest, it’s a waiting game.
Stay patient. Rusty.
