The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's talk about Whitsand Bay and Tregantle in feet and miles per hour, just for you.
Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – this forecast is pretty bleak. We've got a big stretch of nothing good coming up. From Wednesday, August 19th, all the way through Monday, August 25th, it's mostly tiny, weak surf. We're talking about waves that won't even push you around. The swell energy is mostly in the low double digits, which is barely a blip. With the wind coming from the wrong directions, it's gonna be choppy and messy. Don't bother paddling out.
Things get a bit more interesting around Wednesday the 26th. We see a jump to about 5ft from the WSW, but the wind is still cross-onshore, ruining the shape. The energy picks up a bit (260), but the quality isn't there for a good session. This pattern of "nothing special" carries on right through to the end of the month.
Now, here's the one date you need to remember: Monday, August 31st. That's our best shot. We're looking at solid 6ft swell from the SW with a nice 10-second period. The combined energy hits a massive 676, which is the strongest signal in the entire 16-day window. This is real, powerful groundswell. But, and it's a big but, the wind is a fresh cross-shore. It's going to be lumpy and a bit of a struggle. This 6ft swell is getting into the "experts only" zone because of the power and the messy conditions. If you're a beginner, definitely sit this one out. For the more experienced crew, Monday morning could offer some raw, powerful waves, even if they aren't perfectly groomed.
After that, the window closes again, and we're back to smaller, weaker, wind-affected waves. So, the story is a whole lot of waiting, with one potential standout right at the very end. Mark your calendar for August 31st, say a prayer for the wind, and we'll see what happens. This is Rusty, out.
