The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve stared at the charts for this stretch and I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s going to be a long, flat wait. We’re looking at a 16-day window that starts with a whole lot of nothing. Right now, through the rest of July and into the first few days of August, the ocean is basically taking a nap. The first day we even see a pulse that might stand up is Saturday the 25th of July, and even that’s a struggle. From now until then, there’s a gap of about a week where you’re better off checking the sand for shells than looking for a wave.
The only spot on the cards is Whitsand Bay and Tregantle. The first hint of anything surfable shows up on the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. We’ll see a weak, short-period swell from the W at about 3 ft, but the wind is howling cross-shore at 12 mph, making it choppy. The wave energy is weak (29). That afternoon, the swell drops back to about 1 ft and the wind picks up to 16 mph. It’s not great. Things stay poor through the 26th and 27th with messy cross-onshore winds and tiny swell.
The best we’ve got in this whole outlook is a long-shot call on the 28th of July. Tuesday morning sees a 2 ft swell from the W, but it’s onshore. The afternoon is a bust with 19 mph winds. Then on Wednesday the 29th, it’s a messy, rainy day with onshore winds and tiny waves. The 30th of July offers a moment of pure glass in the morning with no wind, but the swell is virtually non-existent at 0.3 ft.
Further out, the 31st of July morning offers a clean offshore wind from the ENE at 16 mph, but again, the swell is just 0.3 ft. You might get a ripple, but that’s it. The 1st of August and 2nd of August are more of the same – tiny, weak swell and cleanish but surfable-looking conditions that don’t deliver any power.
Honestly, lads, this is a tough one. The water temperature is 67°F with a massive anomaly of 6°F, meaning it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a nice surprise for a paddle, but there’s just no energy in the water. The combined swell energy barely breaks into double digits for most of the period. If you’ve got a kite, this stretch of beach-and-reef might be more interesting for you than a surfboard, especially on the windier days. For the rest of us, we wait. The forecasts can always change, but right now, this is a blank run.
Rusty.
