Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whitsand Bay and Tregantle over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’ve got a long 16-day window ahead, and for the most part, it’s a flat spell with a few flickers of life way down the track. The first real surf worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Thursday, July 16th. Before that, we’re looking at a solid four-day stretch of nothing but tiny, weak swell with poor conditions. Not worth getting the wetsuit wet.
The first whisper of a wave comes on Thursday, July 16th. Whitsand Bay and Tregantle has a tiny 1ft swell from the SW with a period of just 7 seconds – that’s short-period, weak energy (combined energy of 27). The morning is the call here, with glassy conditions (E winds at 31 mph). It’s still a poor surf day, but for a beginner wanting a gentle splash, it’s the only game in town. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus. Expect a few locals out, because it’s often crowded here.
Friday the 17th through the end of the third week stays marginal. Nothing really stands out until Sunday, July 26th when we finally see some size. By the afternoon, a 7ft swell from the WSW rolls in – that’s expert territory, over 8ft is too big for most, so this is only for the experienced crew. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, and the wind is onshore at 22 mph from the WSW, making it choppy. The energy jumps to 804, which is strong, but the quality is poor. The morning of the 26th also has a 5ft swell, but again, onshore winds (WSW 19 mph) and a cross-on chop mean it’s a messy, challenging session.
Standout: Honestly, there’s no true standout here. The best on offer is the Thursday, July 16th morning session at Whitsand Bay and Tregantle – the glassy conditions with that 1ft ankle-snatcher. It’s small, it’s weak, but it’s the only clean window we’ve got. If you’re desperate, that’s your moment.
For the rest of the run, especially the second week, it’s a blank. The 26th has the most size, but the wind ruins it. If you’re a kite surfer, the 26th afternoon might be your jam with that strong onshore breeze and solid swell – paddle surfing? Forget it.
Stay patient, the forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a long dry spell.
Rusty.
