The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for our local stretch of coast over the next couple of weeks. I've got to be straight with you – it's a tough outlook. There are some days with a bit of size, but the wind and conditions are rarely playing ball. You'll need to be patient and pick your moments carefully.

The first real chance to get a wet suit on won't be until the 27th of August. Before that, we're looking at tiny, weak swells. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Wednesday the 26th, the waves are mostly around 0.7 ft to 1.3 ft with weak energy (under 31). It's just not worth the paddle.

Things change a bit on Thursday the 27th. A pulse of swell pushes in, hitting 5.6 ft from the SSW with a short, weak period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 392 (moderate), which is the most we've seen, but the wind is a problem – a fresh cross-onshore from the south at 19 mph making it lumpy. That same pulse sticks around on Friday the 28th with 3.0 ft to 3.6 ft from the SW and period dropping to 7 seconds. The wind swings onshore from the WSW, so the quality is still poor.

Saturday the 29th looks a bit better for swell size but the wind is still a cross-onshore from the west at 19-22 mph, making it fresh and lumpy. The waves are 4.3 ft to 4.6 ft from the WSW with weak energy around 192-197. It's not clean, and with the period only 7 seconds, it's going to be a messy, short-period chop. Honestly, with the strong wind and poor surf quality, this beach setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Now, the standout moment in this whole forecast is the afternoon of Sunday the 30th of August. The swell bumps up to 6.6 ft from the SSW, with the combined energy reaching 346 (moderate). This is the biggest surf we'll see in the entire period, but it comes with a big caveat. The period is a short 7 seconds and the wind is onshore from the southwest at 12 mph. That onshore wind will chop it up. For the experienced crew out there, this is your window, but it won't be pretty. For beginners, this is too big.

The rest of the run into the first week of September is a slow decline. From the 31st of August, the swell drops back to 4.3 ft and below. The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore from the west and southwest. On the 2nd of September, we get a tiny 0.3 ft swell but with a period of 15 seconds – that's very long-period groundswell energy, but it's too small to do anything with. The combined energy is only 15. It's just not enough.

The second week is a real write-off. From the 1st of September onwards, the swell is consistently under 2.6 ft, with weak energy values mostly below 75. The winds remain unfavorable, mostly onshore or cross-onshore from the west or southwest. There's nothing to get excited about.

So, to sum it up: this isn't a classic run. The only real standouts are the 6.6 ft SSW swell on the 30th of August, but you'll need to be an expert to handle the onshore chop. Otherwise, the best you can hope for is a small, clean window if the wind ever swings offshore. That's not looking likely from this data. Keep your eye on the forecasts, things can change.
