The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Marlin.

Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you—this is a rough stretch. The forecast shows a long, blank run with no decent surf on offer for the first two weeks. The swell is small, short-period, and mostly from the SSE to E, and the wind is almost always cross-onshore or onshore, keeping things choppy and lumpy. The combined swell energy is weak, with values mostly under 300 (often under 200), so there’s hardly any push at all. The water temp is 79°, which is about 2° warmer than normal—nothing to get excited about, just a touch warm for the time of year.

Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th have some chest-high swell (6ft to 7ft) but it’s all short-period (8 seconds) and blown out by SE winds, so it’s a mess. The rest of the first week dribbles out with weak, choppy surf. The whole second week (from the 22nd onward) is even worse—swell drops below 3ft, period drops to 6-7 seconds, and energy is pitiful. By the 31st, there’s a slight uptick with 5ft to 6ft of E swell and moderate energy (613 to 685), but the wind is still cross-onshore, and the forecast tags it as marginal at best. Then on September 1st, a long-period S swell (19 seconds) shows up, but it’s only 2ft and the wind is cross-onshore again—a tease, not a treat.

The only break here is Marlin (Marlin). It’s a consistent, beginner-friendly spot that’s exposed to swell, but even with consistent waves, the conditions just aren’t cooperating. The optimum swell direction is S, and we do see some S swell on the 1st, but it’s tiny and messy. Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, with the onshore winds and lumpy conditions.

Don’t lose hope, though—forecasts can change, and Marlin is a consistent break that tends not to stay poor for long. We’ll keep an eye on it.
