The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Marlin over the next couple of weeks is a bit of a rough patch. Don't get your hopes up too high just yet.
Looking at the whole picture, we're in for a long, quiet spell. There's really nothing worth paddling out for from Tuesday, August 18th, all the way through to at least Monday, August 24th. The swell is small, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the wave energy is weak. For example, on that first Tuesday, we've got a 7ft swell from the SE, but it's wind-blown and messy with a 16 mph onshore wind, and the combined energy (702) just tells you it's not clean. It's a frustrating stretch of small, choppy junk.
Things start to look a little more interesting right around Wednesday, August 26th. That afternoon, a new S swell starts to show, and while it's small at 3ft, the period is a very long 17 seconds – that's pure groundswell energy. The energy jumps to 609, but the wind is still onshore. By Thursday morning, August 27th, that swell fills in a bit more to 4ft from the S with a period of 18 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 1129. That's moderate energy and the long period means it will have some push. But – and it's a big but – the wind is cross-onshore, so it's going to be choppy.
The real kicker is that Marlin is an exposed beach break. A long-period S swell like that, with a period over 15 seconds, can be tricky at a beach break – it tends to close out and be a bit too straight. It would be a much better fit for a point or a reef. Because of the cross-onshore wind and the beach break setup, this whole event is probably more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle surfers.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The second week has a pulse of proper, long-period groundswell from the S, but the wind and the break type are working against it. It's promising, but uncertain. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don't cancel your plans just yet.
Rusty.
