The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Marlin over the next 16 days is a tough one. We’ve got a real gap at the start. From Saturday the 18th of July right through until the end of the month, it’s just not happening. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore almost every day, and the forecast keeps saying "poor surf conditions." You’ll see a bit of swell around, but it’s a short period, around 8 seconds, and the wind is just ruining it. The combined wave energy fluctuates, but even when it hits 835 (moderate energy) on the Sunday afternoon, the wind is howling from the ESE at 16 mph, so it’s all chop and no shape. That’s a solid week and a half of bad news.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Thursday the 30th of July, but even then, the swell is tiny and the wind is cross-shore. It’s not until the very end of the run, into the first week of August, that something starts to look a little more interesting.
Now, if you’re an experienced surfer, keep your eyes on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of August. That’s the only time we get a pulse of proper size. On Saturday the 1st of August, we’ve got swell building to 6 ft to 6 ft from the SE, with a short period of 6 to 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 399 (moderate), which is a step up. But the wind is still a problem – a moderate cross-onshore from the SSE at 12 mph. It’s going to be choppy and messy.
The standout window, if you can call it that, is Sunday the 2nd of August. The morning shows 7 ft of SE swell, period still short at 7 seconds, but the wind swings to SE at 12 mph and is "on," meaning it’s directly onshore. That’s going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess. The afternoon drops to 4 ft but the period lengthens to 9 seconds, and the wind eases to 9 mph. The combined energy is still 441 (moderate). It’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s far from clean.
The water temperature is sitting at 79°, which is about average for the time of year with a very small anomaly of +0.7°.
Honestly, there’s no standout perfect day here. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the strong onshore winds and choppy conditions. The only positive is that Marlin is a consistent beginner spot, so it tends not to stay poor forever, but this run is a long one. We’ll have to wait and see if the forecasts change.
Rusty.
