The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's coming up for Marlin over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: it’s a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, bleak run of surf that just won’t get its act together. The water is sitting at a warm 79°, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year, but that’s where the good news ends.
For the first several days, from Saturday the 22nd right through the end of August, it’s pretty grim. We’ve got tiny, weak swell from the southeast or east, barely pushing 2 ft to 4 ft, with a short, choppy period of 7 to 8 seconds. The wind is a constant problem—cross-shore or onshore from the east and southeast, blowing 12 to 13 mph. The wave energy is laughable, barely breaking triple digits (58 to 312). This is flat-out poor, unrideable slop. There’s nothing here.
We do see a little bump in energy around Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th, with the swell swinging more southerly and the period stretching out to a very long 15 to 16 seconds. The combined energy jumps up into the moderate-to-strong range (323 to 846). But don’t get your hopes up—the swell height is only 2 ft to 4 ft, and that onshore wind is still ruining any chance of it cleaning up. Thursday morning gets a sniff of a "marginal" call with a 4 ft southerly groundswell, but with the ESE wind blowing 12 mph straight on, it’s still messy and hard to get excited about. That long period would be a dream for a point break, but not here like this.
From the 29th of August right through the first week of September, it’s more of the same. The swell tries to build to around 4 ft to 5 ft, but it’s all short-period wind chop from the east. The wind stays relentless from the ENE at 12 mph, cross-on and choppy. The energy is moderate (137 to 416), but the quality is zero. The setup just looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The outlook limps into Sunday the 6th of September with a bit of a southerly bump at 5 ft to 5 ft, but the period is short again (7 seconds) and the rain showers and onshore wind seal the deal. It’s a poor end to a poor forecast.
Honestly, there are no standouts here. Not a single day I’d recommend paddling out. This is one of those blank runs that’s more normal for the area when the wind just won’t cooperate. Stick to the skatepark or find a river to float in. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a bummer.
Stay thirsty,
Rusty
