The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s lined up for us. To be honest, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a consistent run of poor surf conditions, and the finder isn’t showing any real standouts. The water temperature is sitting at 79°F, which is about average for the time of year, so at least it’ll be warm while you’re getting frustrated.
The outlook starts with Wednesday, July 15th, and it’s a write-off straight away. We have a cross-on wind from the SSE at 19 mph, making a lumpy mess of the 7ft to 8ft SSE swell. The wave energy is moderate (599-883), but the quality is just poor. That setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. This cross-on, choppy pattern sticks around hard through the rest of the week and into the weekend. The swell stays between 6ft and 8ft, with periods mostly around 7-8 seconds (short period, weak windswell), and the wind just won’t let up. Saturday the 18th is the same story.
We finally see a change in the wind direction on Sunday, July 19th, turning onshore from the ESE. The swell drops to 5ft to 6ft, and while the wind eases to a gentle breeze, the conditions are still described as poor. Monday the 20th afternoon sees a small improvement, with the wind dropping to a light breeze and the swell rising to 6ft from the ESE, but it’s only called “marginal” at best.
From Tuesday, July 21st, through to the end of the month, it’s a long, flat, and unappealing stretch. The swell drops from 6ft down to 2ft, the wave energy dips into the weak two-digit range (112-166), and the wind is either onshore or light cross-onshore. The last few days of July have a tiny pulse of long-period groundswell from the S (periods of 13-15 seconds) starting on the 29th, but the swell height is only 2ft to 3ft, and the wind is still onshore. It’s not enough to get excited about.
So, there’s nothing I can call a standout here. It’s a long, blank run of poor surf with no real recommendations. The area just tends to go quiet like this. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the boards at home and check back later.
Rusty.
