The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've gotta be straight with you – the outlook for Marlin over the next 16 days is a tough one to swallow. I'm looking at a stretch where the surf just isn't playing the game. Across the entire forecast, from now through to the first week of September, every single report is calling it "poor surf conditions." There's not a single standout day, and the scores across the board are bottom of the barrel. We're looking at a long, blank run with no real surf on offer. The water temperature at Marlin is sitting at 79°, which is about normal for this time of year. It's a frustrating situation, but in this area, a run like this isn't all that uncommon – sometimes the ocean just needs a break.

The first few days, from the 19th to the 21st, have onshore winds from the southeast and east, with swell heights around 3 ft to 5 ft but short, weak periods of 7 to 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak to moderate, ranging from 167 to 391, but it's all messy with poor surf quality. The wind is onshore, so it's blown out and choppy. There's no relief through the weekend, either. From the 22nd to the 25th, swell drops to 2 ft to 4 ft, with the same short, weak periods, and cross-onshore winds making for a choppy, ugly surface. The combined energy dips as low as 86, which is weak.

As we head into the last week of August and into September, there's a glimmer of something different on the 26th, with a period of 13 seconds and a bit more energy (467), but it's still onshore wind and the swell height is only 3 ft to 3 ft, so the quality is still poor. From there, it's a rinse and repeat of cross-onshore winds, short-period swell, and poor conditions all the way through to the 3rd of September. The swell stays around 2 ft to 4 ft, with periods mostly at 7 seconds, and the wind never gets favourable. Honestly, for a break that's a beginner-friendly, consistent spot, the setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now, especially with the onshore winds. It's a grim outlook, but forecasts can change.

Rusty.
