The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let me tell you what's cookin' – or rather, what ain't cookin' – for the Marlin stretch over the next couple of weeks.
I'm gonna lay it on you straight: it's a sorry run. The whole sixteen-day window is stamped "poor surf conditions," so don't get your hopes up. There isn't one standout day, not one window where I'd say, "Drop everything and go." It's a long, flat, frustrating stretch with no real quality on offer.
We kick off on Tuesday, the 18th of August, with the wind howling from the southeast at 16 mph and a swell from the ESE with a short 8-second period. The water's a warm 80°, which is about what you'd expect for this time of year, but that's the only good news. The combined wave energy is moderate (669), but with that onshore wind, it's just a messy, choppy pile of nothing.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are more of the same: smaller swell, still onshore wind, and no quality. The energy drops from 441 down to 286. It's just not worth your time.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd see the wind ease a touch, but the swell shrinks under three feet. The energy drops into the weak range (113 on Saturday). You might find some knee-high dribble if you're bored, but it ain't surf.
From Sunday the 23rd all the way through Monday the 31st, it's a long, grim stretch. Swell heights barely top three feet, periods are short, and the wind is never your friend. The energy levels stay weak, under 300 most days. There's a little tease on the 26th and 27th with a long-period 15-second south swell giving us energy of 412 and 631, but the swell height is only 3 to 3 feet and it's cross-onshore. That's a real heartbreaker.
Into the first week of September, we see the swell nudge back up to about five feet on the 1st, but it's still short-period (7 seconds) and cross-onshore. The energy is moderate (295), but the quality's just not there. This setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
So here's the plain truth: there are no good surf options in this entire sixteen-day window. For Marlin, a run like this is a bit more normal – the area can go quiet. Keep the board handy in case something shifts, but for now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
