The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you right off the bat. I’ve looked at the charts for Marlin, and for a good stretch here, there’s just nothing to get excited about.
We’re looking at a pretty blank run for the first few days. Through August 21st to the 24th, the surf is small and the wind is junk – mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The swell heights are barely 4 ft and the period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds. It’s weak, messy, and not worth paddling out for.
The water temperature is a warm 79°, which is about average for the time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit, but you will need patience.
There is a glimmer of something happening around the 25th and 26th of August. The swell bumps up a little, with heights around 4 ft to 4 ft, and the combined swell energy gets into the moderate range. Still, the wind stays onshore and the period is short, so the quality just isn’t there. It’s all labelled as ‘poor surf conditions’.
Now, towards the end of the month and into early September, things get weird. From August 27th right through to September 5th, we start seeing a lot more energy in the water – the combined energy jumps up to strong levels. That sounds good, doesn’t it? But here’s the catch. The swell direction swings around to the south, with a very long period of 15 to 17 seconds. At Marlin, a long-period south swell hitting an exposed beach break is going to break too straight and be hard to ride. The wind stays cross-onshore from the east or northeast, keeping the surface bumpy. Even the best of this period, around August 28th, only gets a marginal rating. That’s the only time the surf is even close to rideable.
So what’s the standout? Honestly, there isn’t one. This whole 16-day window is a write-off for paddle surfing at Marlin. The winds never cooperate, and the wave quality stays poor. If you’ve got a kite, the moderate cross-onshore wind and the solid 4 ft to 5 ft swell from the east might look interesting. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game.
Keep an eye on the forecasts – it tends not to stay this poor forever.
