Table - best surf conditions forecast for Lynmouth over the next 16 days.
Right, I’ve looked at the whole sixteen-day window for Lynmouth, and honestly, it’s a tough one. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, the first week and a half is a total write-off. From the 12th of July right through until the 23rd, we’re looking at flat, blown-out junk. The wind is mostly a strong cross-shore or cross-onshore, coming out of the east, with the swell tiny and short period. You’d be wasting your time. There’s just nothing to ride.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°, which is over 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a weird one – feels more like a bath than the Atlantic.
We do finally see a pulse of energy showing up on the 23rd of July (Thursday morning). The swell bumps up to 5ft from the NW, with a short period of 6 seconds and moderate wave energy (182). The wind is a cross-offshore, which keeps it clean, but don’t get too excited. It’s a short-period, junky swell that isn't going to groom into anything special at this point/river setup. The swell direction is from the NW, which is off the optimum of WNW, so it’s not hitting the spot right. Later that afternoon, the swell drops to 5ft from the WNW, a better direction, with a strong cross-offshore wind, but it’s still a short-period swell with only moderate energy (154). It’s a surfable option, but it’s for advanced surfers only, and it’s not a standout.
The next real chance comes on the 26th of July (Sunday). The swell is 4ft from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds and strong wave energy (202). The wind is a clean cross-offshore. This is the best of the lot. The swell direction is a bit off the optimum, and the period is still short, but the energy is there, and the conditions will be clean. It’s still only a moderate-sized wave, and because it’s a point/river, it might handle the short period better than a beach. The crowds are often here, so expect company.
Other than those two days, the rest of the window is flat or messy. The 24th of July is a write-off with strong onshore winds, and after the 26th, it dribbles away again. It’s a classic case of waiting for a change in the weather pattern. For now, the 26th of July is your best bet, but it’s not a game-changer.
