The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for the Lynmouth area. The forecast for the next 16 days is a real struggle. We’ve got a long, dry spell of no good surf, and it’s only right at the very end of the window that we might see a tiny flicker of life.
The problem is persistent. For the first nine days, from Friday the 21st of August right through to Saturday the 29th of August, the swell is tiny, often under 3ft, and the wind is never your friend. It’s a mess of cross-shore and cross-onshore breezes, creating lumpy, choppy, and generally poor surf conditions. The wave energy is weak, often reading below 100 (typically in the 10-88 range), which tells you there’s just no power in the water. The water temperature is a notable 68°F with a big positive anomaly of 6°F, meaning it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when there’s no waves.
We then roll into a second week of nothing. From early Sunday the 30th of August right through to the end of the forecast window on Friday the 5th of September, the picture doesn’t really improve. The swell height does bump up a touch, with a few sessions showing 5ft or even 6ft, but the wind and wave quality are still terrible. The guidance calls this one a 'point/river' break, and it's rated as advanced and inconsistent, which is a big red flag. It’s highly sheltered, needing a WNW swell, but the wind is almost always wrong.
The only day that might give you a glimmer of hope is Sunday the 30th of August morning. The finder shows surfable waves but very ordinary conditions with a 4ft swell from the W, period of 8 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore wind from the SSW. The combined energy is a moderate 142. It’s not a standout, it’s just the least bad session in a very bleak forecast. For a break that's inconsistent and only for advanced crew, you’d need to be pretty desperate. Given the persistent poor quality and the strong winds, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the period.
Rusty.
