The Lowdown
Gap from now until the 19th of August with no real surf on offer. It’s flat, small, and chopped up for days. We’ve got a weak Westerly bump coming mid-period, but the wind’s all over it. Looks like we’ll have to wait for Wednesday morning to get anything half-rideable, and even then, it’s a struggle.
Wednesday the 19th sees the swell start to build a bit, pushing 4ft out of the West with a 7-second period. The energy is still weak-to-moderate at best, with the combined swell energy at 150, and it’s cross-shore and lumpy. Not pretty. But Wednesday afternoon turns slightly cross-offshore from the WSW, cleaning it up a little. That’s the first real window, but it’s still only marginal.
Thursday the 20th morning has a bit more push in the water, 4ft West swell, energy up to 181, but it’s still cross-shore and messy. Too much wind to be any good.
The standout of this whole sorry stretch is the 29th of August. The swell jumps to 7ft out of the WSW with an 8-second period, and the energy rockets up to 650. That’s a serious pulse of energy, a real strong push of water. The wind is howling cross-shore though, fresh and lumpy. Lynmouth (North Devon) is a point/river setup, so a longer period works better here, but 8 seconds is short and punchy, and with this much wind, it’s going to be a full-on, expert-only session. It’s also inconsistent, so you’ll be scratching around for sets. If you’re an advanced surfer, that’s your one real shot, but be prepared for a beating.
Before that, the 20th through the 28th is mostly poor. There’s a few small, clean-ish windows—like the 21st with lighter winds and a small 2ft West swell—but it’s all cross-on and junky. The 24th afternoon goes glassy with a tiny 0.3ft, which is just flat. The 27th has a moderate 4ft West swell but it’s still onshore and choppy.
The water is running much warmer than normal for this time of year, well above average, so you won’t need a thick suit.
After that big pulse on the 29th, it settles back down to 4ft with heavy cross-shore winds for the 30th and 31st. The last day of the month has some cross-offshore wind in the afternoon, but the swell is dropping and it’s still not worth getting too excited about.
Bottom line: one day to really watch—Saturday the 29th—and it’s only for the experienced. Everything else is a wash. The inconsistency of this break is a big factor; it’s a spot that doesn’t fire often, and this forecast isn’t changing that story.
