Right then, let me have a look at what’s on the cards for our little corner of the coast. We’re talking Lynmouth, that point/river setup, and it’s a tricky one to call. The spot’s naturally sheltered and inconsistent, so we’re not looking at a classic run of waves here. To be honest, for the first week or so, it’s pretty flat and the wind is all wrong – mostly cross-shore or onshore junk. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about 5° warmer than average for this time of year – that’s noticeably warm, feels like a little summer gift even if the surf isn’t playing ball.
We’re looking at a long dry spell. From Saturday the 11th right through to Monday the 20th, it’s pretty much a no-go. Tiny swell, poor surf conditions, and wind that’s making a mess of things. The energy is weak across the board – you’re seeing numbers like 21 (low energy), 8 (very low), and the like. Not worth paddling out for.
Things start to look a fraction more promising around Tuesday the 21st. The swell bumps up to a consistent 4 ft from the west, and the wind swings to a cross-offshore direction. The energy readings climb to 100 and then 102 (moderate wave energy), and the break is described as clean. It’s still not huge, but at least the conditions are surfable. Thursday the 23rd sees the swell peak in our window: 4 ft from the west, period around 8 seconds, with moderate cross-shore wind. The energy is up to 164 and 195 (moderate wave energy). But honestly, it’s still poor surf conditions – the cross-shore wind is creating a lumpy chop. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this isn’t a standout.
Then we get to Saturday the 25th. Now, this is the one I’d circle. The swell jumps to 8 ft from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. That’s serious size for Lynmouth – pushing into expert-only territory. The energy is massive, at 778 (strong wave energy). Wind is a fresh cross-shore, which isn’t ideal for this setup, but the sheer size and power will make it a heavy, challenging day. The wave comment still says “poor surf conditions,” but for the crew who know this break, that amount of west swell will make it run. Sunday the 26th is cleaner, with cross-offshore winds and a drop to 3 ft to 2 ft, but the energy has backed right off to the 90s.
So, the standouts: Without a doubt, Saturday the 25th is the day to be watching. 8 ft west swell is rare for Lynmouth, the energy is pumped, and while the wind isn’t perfect, the size will be the main event. The other clean days (21st and 26th) are smaller and more rideable for a confident surfer, but lack the punch. For the first ten days, you’re better off taking the dog for a walk.
