Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm going to level with you. If you're sat on the North Devon coast looking for a proper surf, the next couple of weeks are going to test your patience. Honestly, the forecast is pretty grim for Lynmouth (United Kingdom) for the vast majority of the next 16 days. It's not that the swell is missing entirely, but we’ve got a real problem with the wind – it's stuck in a cross-shore pattern for days on end, which just ruins the face of the wave. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there, but you're gonna be looking at a lot of lumpy, choppy water.
From this Friday the 3rd of July right through until Wednesday the 15th of July, it’s a write-off. Seriously, there’s a solid 12-day stretch where the conditions are just poor. The swell is meagre, mostly hanging around the 1ft to 3ft from the west, but that cross-shore wind, at times blowing a fresh 19 mph, creates a real cross-chop. You’d be fighting a losing battle trying to find a clean face out there. The combined swell energy barely registers a pulse, often sitting below 100 (weak energy). Lumpy cross-chop and fresh breezes are the name of the game there, and that’s not a game any of us want to play.
Now, there's a tiny, tiny glimmer. On Monday the 13th of July, we get a window of *absolute glass* in the morning. The report calls it "glassy," and I can’t stress how big a deal that is after all this wind. The swell bumps up a touch to 2ft from the west, with a period of 11 seconds – a proper long-period groundswell that brings some shape and energy (91 combined energy, moderate). For a spot like Lynmouth, which is a point and river setup, that long period is actually its friend; it'll wrap in and give you a proper little ride. But it’s tiny. That's your one true standout window in the whole outlook.
The other interesting date is further out. On Thursday the 16th of July, the morning session has a chance. We get a 3ft west swell with a 9-second period (139 combined energy, moderate), and the wind goes offshore from the south at 9 mph. The report says it’s "gentle offshore and clean," which sounds perfect on paper. It’s the best combined energy and height we see, but it’s a long way off. Take that as a promising but less certain "maybe" for your calendar.
Overall? This is a blank run that’s more normal for this part of the world when the wind sets in. The forecast could change, but right now, if you're not checking the morning of the 13th of July for that glassy 2ft wave, or keeping an eye on the 16th of July for some clean offshore conditions, you're better off waiting. It’s a proper dry spell.
Rusty.
