The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on offer around Lynmouth.
Honestly, it's a tricky outlook for Lynmouth (North Devon). The first week or so is a write-off for any proper surfing. We're looking at a solid week of tiny, weak swell with poor winds, and all the scores are bottomed out. You'd be wasting your time paddling out for anything that's showing until we get into the end of August. This is a real blank run for the area, but that's not unusual for this time of year.
The first real pulse of energy we see arrives late on Saturday the 29th of August, with the swell picking up to about 6ft from the west. But the problem is the wind – a fresh 35 km/h cross-shore breeze is going to make a proper mess of it. The combined energy is moderate, but it'll be lumpy and choppy. Not exactly a standout. The water temp is sitting around 67°F, which is over 5° warmer than the long-term average for this spot, so that's very unusual – a real warm spell.
The best chance for something worthwhile looks like Thursday the 3rd of September. We've got a clean, strong offshore wind from the south at a solid 40 km/h, with a 5ft swell from the west. The combined energy is moderate. That westerly swell is coming from the optimum direction for Lynmouth, and with that offshore wind, the point should clean right up. However, with the swell over 5ft, it's getting a bit solid for beginners, and that strong offshore breeze can make paddling out a battle. It's more for the experienced crew who know the lineup.
Another session to keep an eye on is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. The wind swings light offshore from the south at 10 km/h, and the swell drops to about 3ft. It's a short-period windswell, but with glassy conditions, it could offer a few fun ones for a log or a mid-length if you're keen to just get wet. The energy is weak though.
Later on Friday the 4th of September, we get a 3ft west swell with a moderate cross-onshore breeze. The energy is weak to moderate. It might produce a wave, but don't expect any sort of classic Lynmouth shape.
So, to cut through it: the only real standout in this whole 16-day window is that Thursday the 3rd of September. A proper westerly groundswell with strong offshore wind at an advanced spot like Lynmouth is a recipe for some hollow ones for the experts. Everything else is pretty lacklustre. The rest of the time you'd be better off checking the river if it ever has water, or just waiting for the next proper swell.
