The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real with you. The next couple of weeks are gonna test your patience. We’ve got a long, drawn-out stretch of small, messy waves before anything with real push shows up. The swell window is mostly open to the west, but the wind gods aren’t playing nice for most of it. Let’s get into it.

The next few days are a write-off, to be honest. Tuesday and Wednesday are all onshore slop—cross-on winds, short-period windswell, and just generally poor surf conditions. You’re looking at chest-high stuff at best, but it’s going to be lumpy and hard to ride. The energy is weak to moderate, with values around 101 to 159, which tells you all you need to know. Not worth paddling out unless you're desperate for a paddle.

Thursday the 20th sees a tiny bump in size—around 4.9ft, but it’s still onshore, choppy, and the period is short. The energy picks up to 303, which is moderate, but the wind is ruining it. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so not a factor.

Now, Friday the 21st is a tease. A gentle offshore breeze from the NE cleans things up in the morning. The swell drops to a gutless 2ft with an 8-second period. It’s the only semi-clean wave in the first week, but there’s just no power. You’ll be bobbing around waiting for a waist-high lump. It's surfable, but "very ordinary" is the word. The energy is weak at 56.

Then the bottom drops out. Saturday the 22nd through Monday the 24th is about as flat as it gets. Swell heights collapse to 0.3ft to 1.3ft. The energy is down in the 15 to 38 range, which is barely a ripple. There’s a glassy moment on Monday morning, but with almost no swell, it’s a lake.

After that little flat spell, we get a small pulse of cross-off swell late Tuesday the 25th. The morning is still weak, but the afternoon looks a bit better—3.9ft with a longer 10-second period and clean conditions. The energy jumps to 267, which is moderate. This is the first somewhat rideable window, but it's not a classic. It's marginal, tide-dependent.

Then it’s back to the doldrums again from Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th. The wind goes onshore again, the swell is tiny and short-period, and the energy drops back below 200. Just more frustration.

Alright, here’s where it gets interesting. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th see a steadier push of groundswell. Saturday morning has 4.6ft from the WSW with a cross-off breeze, clean conditions and moderate energy at 168. But it’s Saturday afternoon where things get a bit more serious: 5.6ft, a period of 8 seconds, but the wind swings around to the south and gets fresh, making it lumpy and cross-shore. The energy is up to 323, so there’s some juice, but it’s not clean.

The best-looking window in the whole period, and I mean the only real standout, is the end of the run—Monday the 31st of August into the start of September. Monday brings building swell from the WSW, hitting 5.6ft in the morning and climbing to 6.9ft by the afternoon. The period is 8 seconds, but the energy is strong, jumping from 355 to 569. However, there’s light rain and a cross-shore wind making it lumpy. It’s powerful, but still not perfect.

Now, the real promise is for Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a solid 6.9ft of west-northwest groundswell, with a longer 10-second period. The energy reading is massive—1495 in the morning, which is strong to very strong. The morning wind is a fresh cross-onshore, so it will be lumpy and challenging, but it’s got size. The afternoon settles down a bit with a SW breeze at 15 km/h, and the energy is still a very strong 800. This is the one. Woolacombe is a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed to that WNW swell direction, and it’s got the size to get proper. This is a day for experienced surfers, maybe not a beginner’s day. The water is still average temp, so it’s just a standard summer suit.

Wednesday the 2nd keeps some size at 6.6ft with a 9-second period, but the wind goes cross-onshore from the NW and the energy drops to 624. Still strong, but turning messy.

So, what’s the takeaway? Don’t bother with the first week and a half. It’s a barren wasteland of close-outs and flat spells. The real call is for the end of the window. If you can wait, get to Woolacombe on the 1st of September. That’s the standout—big, powerful, and full of energy, even if the
