Alright, let’s cut through the noise. I’ve been staring at the charts for Woolacombe and I gotta tell you, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The next two weeks are looking pretty flat and lifeless. There’s a proper gap here, days and days with nothing worth paddling out for. The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t show up until Saturday the 18th of July, and even that’s a marginal call.
Woolacombe (beach and reef) is our only option in the window, and it’s a real waiting game. For the first week and a half, the swell is tiny, barely a wobble. We’re talking wave heights from 1ft to 3ft with short-period, weak windswell. The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. The combined wave energy is low, mostly in the 20s and 30s (weak) and occasionally climbing into the 100s (moderate), but the wind is a problem. We’ve got onshore breezes, cross-on winds, and the conditions are just messy. The forecast is calling it “poor surf conditions” day after day. There is one bright spot around Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th of July, where we get a nice stretch of clean, offshore wind from the ENE, but the swell is only 1ft to 1ft. It’s glassy and clean, but you’d need a longboard and a prayer. That’s for the patient souls who just want to feel the water.
It’s not until Saturday the 18th of July that anything really changes. The swell starts to lift, hitting 5ft on the Saturday morning, coming from the West with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 267 (moderate). The wind is light and cross-shore from the North, which will keep the surface pretty clean. This is a step up, but 5ft with that short period is going to be a bit of a lumpy, crumbly wave – better for a ripper on a grovel board than a classic cruiser. It’s the only time in the entire 16 days that the height breaks the 3ft mark properly, and because of that, it’s the standout. The afternoon stays in the 5ft range. It’s not a classic Woolacombe day, but it’s the best we’re going to get. There’s nothing else worth mentioning before or after that. Wait it out.
Rusty.
