Right then, let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Woolacombe. It’s a beach and reef set-up, fairly exposed to the swell, and it’s a spot that’s sometimes busy. The water’s sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year – nothing crazy, but you might notice it.
Alright, I’ll be straight with you – the first week and a bit is a write-off. From Saturday the 4th right through to Monday the 13th, we’ve got a real flat spell. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7ft to 2ft, and the wind is either onshore or cross-shore. The wave energy is weak, never getting above 234, and that was a one-off. It’s mostly down in the double digits or low hundreds. There’s nothing worth paddling out for. It’s a proper lull.
There’s a glimmer on Tuesday the 14th. The early morning shows a 2ft swell from the west with a 10-second period. The combined energy is 68, still weak, but with an offshore easterly breeze at 12 mph, it’ll be clean. The comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Look, it’s not going to set the world on fire, but if you’re desperate and just want to get wet, that window on the morning of the 14th is the only realistic chance you’ve got. Even then, it’s a 1 out of 10.
After that, it’s back to tiny, messy waves right through until Friday the 17th afternoon. That’s when we see a bump to 5ft from the west, but the period is short (7 seconds) and the wind is onshore. The combined energy jumps to 239, which is moderate, but with onshore wind and a short period, it’ll be lumpy and unappealing for a paddle. A stronger onshore and a beach set-up like this? Honestly, it might be more interesting for the kite crowd than us surfers.
The best of a bad bunch might be the morning of Saturday the 18th, with a 4ft west swell and a light onshore breeze. It’s nothing special, just the least bad option.
So, the honest truth: there are no standout days here. The best on offer is the clean but tiny window on the morning of the 14th, and maybe the slightly bigger but onshore swell on the 17th. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
