The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Woolacombe over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a grim picture for the foreseeable. This stretch of beach and reef is pretty exposed to a WNW swell, but the models are showing next to no energy for the first ten days or so. The combined swell energy is in the weak category, barely cracking 20 for the first few days, and then it drops even lower, to single digits. That’s not surf, that’s a lake. There’s a gap of nearly a week and a half here with nothing worth paddling out for. The water’s currently 64°F, which is over 4°F warmer than usual for the time of year – that’s notable, but it's not making any waves.
We finally see a pulse of something on Friday, July 24th. A small southwest swell pushes in at 4ft, but with a period of just 5 seconds, it’s pure wind chop. The winds are onshore and the energy is still weak (71). It’s a write-off. The next day, Saturday, July 25th, the swell hangs around at 3ft but with a fresh cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be a lumpy, messy affair. The energy is still weak.
Looking further out, Sunday, July 26th, is a write-off for surfing. The wind is pumping from the south at 31 mph, creating a near gale cross-shore with crossing waves. The setup here would be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The combined swell energy is weak (66), and the conditions are just plain nasty.
The following week is more of the same: small, weak swells with onshore or cross-onshore winds. There’s no standout session, no window where the stars align. The wind is rarely offshore, and when it is, there’s no swell to work with. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a dry spell. The forecasts can change, but right now, I’d save your energy and wait for a better run.
