The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got down at Itapema - Sul. Gotta be straight with you – it’s looking pretty bleak for the next couple of weeks. The first recommendation doesn’t pop up until Wednesday the 6th, but even that’s a bit of a stretch calling it ‘surf’. We’re looking at a long gap of basically nothing workable from the 6th right through the 16-day window. This spot is sheltered, and it shows.

We start out Wednesday the 6th with barely a ripple – 0.7ft from the WNW, period a tiny 2 seconds, combined energy at a weak 1. There’s a cross-on wind that’s just not doing us any favours. Thursday the 7th keeps it tiny, 1.0ft from the WNW again, but the wind turns cross-offshore in the morning, so the surface cleans up. Still, with a period of 3 seconds and energy of 2, you’re basically paddling for nothing. By Saturday the 8th afternoon, we get a bit of glassy conditions with a 2ft NE swell, period 3 seconds, energy 14. It’s clean, but the swell is weak and short-period.

The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing weird there.

Then we hit a long dry spell. From Sunday the 9th all the way to the following Thursday the 13th, the wind goes offshore or clean, but there’s zero swell to ride. Just flat and clean – good for a tan, bad for a wave.

On Thursday the 13th, we see a pulse of 3ft from the east, period 6 seconds, energy 66. That’s the most energy we’ve seen, but the wind is cross-on, and the period is still short. It’s a poor surf call.

Saturday the 15th afternoon brings the biggest swell of the whole outlook: 4ft from the NE, period 7 seconds, energy 116 (moderate wave energy). The wind goes glassy – totally calm. That’s the cleanest window we get, but for a beginner-friendly, sheltered spot, 4ft might be a touch much for absolute beginners, though it’s not critical. The period is still short, so it won’t have much push.

Thursday the 20th sees another NE swell at 4ft, period 6 seconds, energy 104, but the wind is cross-on and the surface gets choppy.

Honestly, there’s no standout session here. The best of a bad bunch is Saturday the 15th afternoon – glassy, 4ft NE. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. But for proper waves? This stretch is a write-off. It’s one of those periods where the forecast just doesn’t line up – and for this area, that happens. Don’t lose hope though; forecasts change.

Rusty.
