The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've scanned the charts and the outlook for Hollyoake over the next sixteen days, and I'm not gonna sugar-coat it: it's a pretty grim stretch for paddle surfing. We're looking at a whole lot of small, weak, and often messy conditions. The best you can hope for are a few fleeting moments where it just becomes rideable, but nothing is gonna get the heart pumping. There's a bit of a gap at the start here too, with nothing really worthwhile on Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th.

Let's start from the beginning. Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th are write-offs. Tiny swell, all under 3ft, and the wind is just all over the shop, creating chop and cross-chop. Don't even bother.

Friday the 7th of August shows a flicker of life. The morning sees a light 3ft SSW swell cruise in with a gentle cross-offshore breeze, cleaning things up. It gives us "surfable but ordinary" waves. Energy is still low. It's something to get wet on, but don't expect any magic. The afternoon gets blown out by a strong cross-shore.

Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th are more of the same: small and weak, with a bit of cross-offshore wind in the mornings keeping things clean for a paddle, but really, the swell is just too puny.

Now, Monday the 10th of August offers the best chance in this whole grim outlook. The morning brings a 4ft south swell, the biggest we'll see. Combined energy finally picks up a bit. And the light WSW wind is holding cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. This is the standout period, but it's still "surfable but ordinary", so keep your expectations in check.

From there it's a slow decline. Tuesday the 11th through to the end of the period is a saga of tiny swell. There are pockets of glassy conditions on Thursday morning the 13th and a glassy early start Saturday the 15th with the wind swinging into a clean WNW, but the swell is just anemic. Even if the chance of waves is possible, the period is too short to do much except maybe small beachies.

All in all, this is a rough run for Hollyoake. The water's a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 77°F, but that's small comfort. For the next two weeks, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Keep your eyes on the charts, but I'd be finding something else to do for a while.

Rusty.
