Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm looking at what we can get into at Higgins Beach for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, the pickup is real slim. There’s no real standout swell window at all. The first time I’d even consider putting a wetsuit on is Wednesday, July 8th, and that’s a big “maybe.” For the most part, it’s small, messy, and uninviting. There are long stretches where it’s completely dead.
Water temp is right around where you’d expect for this time of year. No drama there.
Sunday, July 5th and Monday, July 6th are write-offs – tiny swell, onshore wind, poor surf. Don’t bother.
Wednesday morning, July 8th is the first glimmer. Swell is 5ft from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds, bringing moderate energy (276). The wind is light cross-onshore, making it a little lumpy. It’s a *marginal* call – surfable if you’re desperate, but nothing special. The afternoon falls apart with a stronger onshore breeze.
The best conditions actually come on Friday morning, July 10th. The wind drops to glassy – totally calm – which is a big deal for clean waves. Swell is tiny though: just 2ft from the SSE with a weak energy reading of 72. You could be out there in the glass, but you’d be fighting for gutless little rollers.
From there, it’s back to poor quality. The wind is onshore or cross-shore almost daily, with small swell. There’s a glassy morning on Monday, July 13th, but the swell is a pathetic 0.9ft. No power at all.
Saturday, July 18th brings the biggest swell of the whole forecast – 6ft in the morning and 7ft in the afternoon from the SSE. Combined energy jumps to 335 and 465 – strong. Problem is, the wind stays cross-onshore, making it choppy. The period is short (7-8 seconds), so the waves will be bumpy and lack shape. Given it’s a beach break and the wind is onshore, this is more of a kite-surfing day than a paddling session. Not recommended.
We end the period on Monday, July 20th with one of the cleaner outlooks: a cross-offshore wind from the WSW, swell at 3ft, and moderate energy (118). It’s clean but still small. If you’re going to paddle out at all in this stretch, that’s your best, most comfortable bet.
All in all, it’s a quiet, frustrating run. There are almost no good options, and the few windows are small or blown out. Could change, but for now, the board is staying in the bag.
Rusty.
