The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m looking at the next 16 days for the area, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty poor run of surf. The energy is weak, the swell is small, and the wind is going to be a problem more often than not. There’s one real standout, but you’ll have to wait for it.
The first decent sign doesn’t show up until Wednesday, July 22nd, in the afternoon. Higgins Beach picks up a 6 ft swell from the SSE, and the combined energy hits 369 – that’s a solid moderate pulse. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell, but the swell size is there. The downside is a cross-shore wind from the SSW at 9 mph, so it’ll be a bit chopped up. For a bigger, stronger surfer, it’s worth a look, but it’s not clean.
The real standout is Thursday morning, July 23rd. Higgins Beach (United States) gets glassy conditions with a light S wind at 3 mph – that’s a major win. The swell is 4 ft from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds, which is a decent medium-period swell. The combined energy is 244 – moderate, but solid. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual. This is the best on offer. It’s a clean, fun-sized morning, and the wind is offshore so it’ll be smooth. It’s not a monster, but it’s the only session that looks genuinely good. After that morning, it falls apart quickly with a cross-onshore wind, so get in early.
After Thursday, it’s a long, dry spell. From Friday, July 24th, all the way through to the end of the forecast on August 3rd, the surf is consistently poor. Swell drops to 3 ft or smaller, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore, onshore, or just messy. The combined energy sits in the 50-150 range – weak to barely moderate. There’s a brief moment on Thursday, July 30th, in the afternoon when it goes glassy again with a 2 ft swell, but it’s tiny and not worth paddling out for. Same with Friday morning, July 31st – a clean 3 ft from the SSE, but still small. It’s surfable but very ordinary.
For the first few days, there’s nothing. Sunday, July 19th, has a small 3 ft but it’s very ordinary. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning are all poor. So there’s a gap from the start until Wednesday afternoon, and then a massive gap in quality from Thursday afternoon all the way to the end.
If you’re a beginner, anything over 5 ft is getting big, but the 6 ft on Wednesday afternoon is too short-period and choppy for a fun session. The 4 ft on Thursday morning is more manageable. For experts, there’s nothing over 8 ft, so no big-wave days.
Given the weak energy and poor winds for most of the run, and that it’s a beach break, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on a lot of those days. Especially when the onshore wind picks up and the swell is just mushy.
Hang in there, but Thursday morning, July 23rd, is your one shot.
