Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s be straight up: this is a tough run for Higgins Beach. The outlook for the full 16 days is pretty grim, and honestly, there’s no standout session worth paddling out for. The swell stays tiny, the wind is messy, and it’s one of those stretches where you’re better off leaving the board in the shed.
The water temperature at Higgins Beach (Maine) is sitting at 65°F, which is about 4°F warmer than average for this time of year – that’s notably warm and a real treat if you do get in the water. But the surf itself? It’s a long dry spell. From now through to early July, the swell heights hover around 1 to 1 feet with short-period, weak energy. The combined energy readings are mostly in the teens and twenties – barely a ripple. Winds are often cross-off or glassy in the mornings, but the sea is just too flat to care. There is a brief flicker on Friday morning 3 July, with a 1 foot SSE swell and a light W cross-off breeze (9 mph), but the wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions”. That theme runs deep.
Moving into the second week, around Wednesday 8 July, we see a tiny bump: 3 feet from the SSE with a period of just 6 seconds and combined energy of 73 – weak. The morning has a decent cross-off wind from the NNE at 9 mph, making it clean, but the waves are barely surfable and “very ordinary”. The same slight increase crops up again on Sunday 12 July (3 feet, SE, 6 seconds, energy 70) but the wind turns cross-onshore, chopping it out.
The biggest swell of the whole window arrives on Saturday 18 July afternoon: 7 feet from the SSE at 6 seconds, combined energy hitting 359 – moderate energy finally. But it’s accompanied by a risk of thunderstorms and a strong SSW wind at 16 mph blowing cross-onshore, so the surf is messy and lumpy. Too big for beginners and blown-out, really only for experts who don’t mind dodging rain squalls. That’s not a recommendation; that’s a warning.
There are a couple of glassy mornings – Sunday 5 July morning (1 foot, SE, 8 seconds, energy 13) and Monday 13 July morning (2 feet, SSE, 7 seconds, energy 47) – but the wave height is so small it’s barely a ripple. Nice weather to sit on the sand, not to surf.
To be blunt, Higgins Beach is consistently offering poor surf conditions across the entire 16-day forecast. There’s no one standout day, no clean head-high set with light offshores. If you’re after waves, you’re looking at a blank run. Given that this beach is a consistent spot, it tends not to stay this quiet for long – forecasts can change. But for now, the only thing breaking is the wind. Surf’s a no-go. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
