The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you. Things are looking pretty grim for the next 16 days at Higgins Beach. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf here, so don’t be in a rush to wax up.
Right off the bat, through the end of August and into the first days of September, the swell is tiny – we’re talking knee-high slop at best. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, chopping everything up. There’s just no energy in the water.
Now, the first little flicker of hope comes on the morning of Sunday, the 23rd of August. It’s not much, with a weak 2.6ft swell from the ESE (moderate wave energy, 67), but the wind dies to glassy (0 km/h). That’s a rare window of clean conditions for a grovel session. The water’s sitting at 63.3°F, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We get a slightly bigger bump around Monday the 24th, with the swell hitting 3.6ft from the SSE and a stronger cross-off wind giving us clean faces. The combined energy jumps to 184 (moderate), but it’s still just not a great wave. The period is short at 6 seconds, so the power just isn’t there.
After that, it’s back to weak, messy surf until we creep into September. The morning of Saturday the 29th offers another glassy moment, with a 3.3ft SE swell and clean conditions. The combined energy is up a bit at 132 (moderate), but the wave quality is just “surfable” at best – it’s a beach break with short-period swell, so expect closeouts.
The real standout, if you can even call it that, comes very late in the window. By Friday the 4th of September, we get a consistent 3.3ft SE swell with a little more period (8 seconds) and clean cross-off winds. The combined energy is solid at 122 (moderate). This is the closest we get to a proper session, but it’s still only for the desperate. For any beginner, this is okay, but for experienced surfers, it's still small.
Honestly, for this entire 16-day run, the best bet is the glassy morning on August 29th. It’s the biggest clean window we get. If you’re an expert, you’ll be bored. If you’re a kite surfer, the onshore wind days might be more your thing.
