Table - best surf conditions forecast for Higgins Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Higgins Beach is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions, with only a couple of moments that are even worth mentioning. The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is a good 4° warmer than what we’d normally expect for this time of year – that’s a notable anomaly, far from the usual.
The first real, albeit weak, sign of life comes on Friday morning, the 10th of July. It’s not much, with a tiny 2 ft swell from the ESE at a short 8 seconds of period. The combined wave energy is a measly 78, so there’s barely any power. But the wind is glassy, flat calm, which is a major positive. That clean surface will make the most of the knee-high lumps. It’s surfable, but you’ll be fighting for every bit of slope. Don’t expect much.
Then we go into a serious dead zone. From Saturday, the 11th of July, all the way through to the 21st of July, the surf is essentially non-existent. Swell heights drop below 2 ft, and the energy numbers are in the teens and twenties. It’s a long, flat spell. There’s a brief moment on the afternoon of the 18th with a 2 ft swell from the east under a moderate offshore wind from the NNW, which cleans things up, but the energy is still very low at 66. It’s a weak, short-period swell that’s just not worth the effort.
Now, the one standout in this entire outlook is the morning of Wednesday, the 22nd of July. The forecast shows a pulse of 5 ft swell from the ESE, and the combined energy jumps way up to 434 – that’s moderate wave energy, a real change from the weeks prior. The period is still short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit bumpy and disorganized, but it’s the biggest swell of the whole period. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the SSW, which is better than onshore, but it’s not ideal. This is the best bet for some actual waves to ride, but it’s over a week and a half away, so treat it as a promising but uncertain prospect. The afternoon follows with 4 ft swell and 289 combined energy, but the wind turns cross-onshore, making it choppier.
So, to sum it up: Friday morning, the 10th, for a glassy but tiny session, and the morning of Wednesday, the 22nd of July, for the biggest, most powerful swell of the forecast. That’s your lot. Everything else is a write-off. The consistent nature of the break means it won’t stay this poor for long, but this window is a tough one to crack.
Rusty.
