Alright, this is Rusty, and I gotta be straight with you – looking up and down Higgins Beach over the next couple of weeks, it’s a tough stretch. There’s nothing that’s going to get you paddling out with a big grin, and for long spells there just won’t be anything worth wetting a wetsuit for.
Overall, this is a classic New England summer flat spell. The punchy swells just aren't lining up with any decent wind. We’re looking at a solid week-plus of small, messy conditions before even a whisper of something half-decent shows up.
Right now, starting on July 5th, we’ve got tiny swell around 1ft coming out of the SE with short 8-second periods and weak energy (13). That’s a no-go, especially with a light onshore breeze making it look real sad. The water’s sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze if you go for a swim instead.
That small, lully pattern carries on through the first week – Monday the 6th is still 1ft, Tuesday the 7th bumps up to 4ft from the SE and 5ft in the afternoon, but the period drops to a terrible 6 to 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 332, but it’s all wind-slop with an onshore breeze. That’s a mess, not a wave.
Through the 8th and 9th of July, we see a similar story: waist-high slop with onshore winds, moderate energy (around 133 to 198), but the quality is just poor. Honestly, it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddling if you’ve got the gear.
Finally, on the morning of Friday the 10th, we get a brief moment of clean conditions. There’s a tiny 3ft S swell with a weak 5-second period (energy of 88) and a light offshore WNW breeze. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s small and weak, but it’s clean. If you’re desperate for a longboard or a foamie, you might get a few ankle-to-knee-high, gutless rolls. That’s the closest thing to a highlight we’ve got, and it’s a low bar.
The following 24 hours offer nothing but flat, glassy mornings and choppy afternoons. We then enter a long, empty gap from the 11th through to the 19th. There are a few days with some north wind cleaning things up, like Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th, but the swell is either non-existent or just tiny, lumpy leftovers. The only other sniff of something is on Friday the 10th morning. It's grim, folks.
The second week is real quiet. Small, crummy S and SE swells, never over 2ft, with onshore winds and periods under 8 seconds. Energy stays below 50 most of the time. Honestly, it’s bottom of the barrel.
So the standout, if you can even call it that, is the morning of Friday, July 10th. It’s the only window with clean, offshore wind and a little bit of shape, but expect ridiculously small waves. For everything else, leave your board at home, or find a lake.
Rusty.
