The Lowdown
Alright folks, ol' Rusty here. Let's have a look at the picture for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a long, frustrating gap with no real surf action to speak of. The first decent recommendation doesn't pop up until the very end of the month, so we're talking about a solid two weeks of basically nothing. The swell is there, but the wind is just shocking for most of it, and the quality's terrible.
The one spot we’ve got to watch is Happys, a point break that handles a NE swell. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing crazy there.
The first couple of weeks are dominated by a big SE/ESE swell, but it's a total write-off. The wind is a relentless cross-onshore from the SE, blowing at 19–22 mph, and the waves are just lumpy, choppy, and messy. Swell heights get up to 10 ft, with combined energy readings well into the strong range (over 1500), but it's all for nothing. It's a real shame – the period is decent, hitting 10 seconds, which usually means some push, but the wind kills it completely. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
As we head into the second week, the swell drops off, but the wind is still rubbish. The period drops to 7–8 seconds, and the energy is weak (under 300). It’s basically a flat spell with occasional small, messy lines.
Alright, now for the only glimmer of hope. Come Saturday, the 1st of August, we finally see a change. The wind swings to the west, going offshore in the morning, and the conditions clean up. The swell is small, only 4 ft, coming from the SE with a short 6-second period, and the energy is weak (94). It’s not a standout by any stretch, but it’s the only clean window we get. The morning on the 1st is your best bet – small, clean, and rideable, but don't expect any power.
So, the standout here is that Saturday morning on the 1st of August. It’s the only time the stars align for a clean session. The rest of the window is a big, fat zero for quality surf.
Rusty.
