The Lowdown
Alright, let me break this down for you, mate. This 16-day stretch for Happys is a grim one. A big, messy start and then a long, slow fade. No real standouts, just a couple of moments that might be worth wetting a line.
We start on Monday, July 20th, with a solid 12-foot swell out of the ESE, running a 10-second period and a stiff 22 mph cross-onshore wind. The water temp is about average for the time of year. That’s a ton of energy coming in – a combined energy reading of 2733 – but the wind has got it all chopped up and lumpy. It’s a write-off. That big swell hangs on into Tuesday with 8-foot waves, but the cross-onshore wind is still blowing, making it a choppy mess.
Wednesday the 22nd gets a little better. The swell drops to 6 feet in the morning with a light cross-onshore breeze and a 9-second period. Energy is down to 615, so it’s marginal. You could probably find a wave if you’re keen, but it’s not good.
Here’s the only window that’s even worth a mention: Thursday morning the 23rd. Swell is down to 4 feet, period at 8 seconds, but the wind goes glassy – dead calm, just 3 mph from the SW. It’ll be clean for a couple hours. Energy is low though, only 202, so the waves will be small and weak. For an intermediate surfer, you might snag a few soft crumbly ones.
After that, it’s a slow bleed into nothing. From Friday the 24th, the swell drops to 3 feet and the wind goes bad. From Saturday the 25th all the way to Tuesday, August 4th, we’re looking at waves mostly under 2 feet, with dodgy winds. There’s a little bump on Thursday, July 31st – 2-foot swell with a long 14-second period from the SE and some clean-ish wind. But that’s still ankle-to-knee high with only 134 energy.
Honestly, if you want to paddle out, your best bet is that Thursday morning the 23rd for a couple of small, glassy waves. The rest of this stretch, the setup looks way better for a kite surfer than a regular surfer.
Keep an eye out, things can shift.
