The Lowdown
Alright, let's get straight into it, folks. The next 16 days are looking pretty slim around here. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – there's no real standout swell on the horizon, and a lot of the time the conditions are just messy. We've got a few moments where you might get a wave, but you'll have to be patient and pick your windows.
The first chance to even wet a line comes up on Friday the 21st of August. The morning at Happys (a point break) will see a small 4 ft easterly swell, but with a short period of just 7 seconds, it's not going to have much push. The wind will be light and cross-offshore, so the surface will be clean. The overall wave energy is weak, measuring only 155. It's surfable, but very ordinary. The afternoon gets worse as the wind swings onshore, so don't expect much.
Saturday the 22nd of August morning is actually the pick of the whole outlook. Happys sees a drop to 3 ft from the east, still with that short 7-second period, but the wind goes glassy – dead calm. That's a major positive. The energy is still weak (111), but with clean, glassy conditions, you might find a few fun little ones. It won't be epic, but it's the best we've got. The afternoon gets choppy as the wind picks up, so make the most of the morning.
After that, it's a long, dry spell. From Saturday afternoon all the way through to the end of the month, the surf is consistently poor. We're talking small, weak, and often onshore wind. The swell drops to under 3 ft for days, and the energy is pitiful, often under 100. There's a brief flicker on the morning of Sunday the 30th of August, where the swell bumps up to 4 ft from the east-northeast, but the period is a pathetic 6 seconds and the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. Not worth the drive.
Then, heading into the first week of September, the swell tries to make a comeback. Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September see the biggest waves of the whole forecast, with 6 ft to 6 ft from the east-northeast, and the energy climbs into the moderate range (279 to 396). The period is still short at 7-8 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy. The wind is cross-offshore on Tuesday, which is a saving grace, but the overall score is still poor. This size is getting into the intermediate zone, but with the short period, it's not going to be a classic.
The water temperature at Happys is currently 68°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 2° below average. So you might want a slightly thicker wetsuit if you're heading out.
In short, if you're desperate, Saturday the 22nd morning is your best bet for some clean, small waves. Everything else is a gamble with poor conditions. Be patient, and maybe wait for a better forecast.
