Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Happys over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, straight up – this is a grim run. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions, and I’m talking more than a week of it. The first recommendation doesn’t even pop up until Saturday the 11th of July, and even then… it’s barely a whisper. So from now until that Saturday morning, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 69°F, which is a bit colder than normal (about 2°F below average), so you’ll want a decent spring suit even when things eventually improve.
Let’s walk through the mess. From Saturday the 4th through to Friday the 10th of July, it’s all poor surf – mostly cross-shore winds in the 9 to 19 mph range, choppy, lumpy, and disorganised. Swell sizes bounce between 2 ft and 8 ft, but the periods are short (6-8 seconds) and combined wave energy hovers in the moderate range (124 to 898). The wind is never doing us any favours, and the quality is just not there. There’s a few days with some long-period swell (11 seconds) around Wednesday the 8th, but it’s still messy and cross-shore.
Then we get to Saturday morning, the 11th of July – that’s our only real chance. The swell drops to 3 ft from the SE, with a long period of 11 seconds, and the wind turns light from the SSW, giving us a clean, cross-offshore breeze. Combined energy is only 147 (weak), so it’s small and weak, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see. Conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary” – and honestly, that’s the highlight. It’s a point break that prefers NE swell, and we’re getting SE, so the direction is a bit off, but with offshore wind, it might still offer a few fun little runners. Crowds can be an issue here (often busy), and it’s fairly consistent, so if you’re keen, get in early.
After that, from Sunday the 12th onward, it just fades away. Swell drops to 2 ft or less, periods get short, and we’re back to cross-onshore breezes. By the time we hit the second week, it’s flat – tiny waves, weak energy (13 to 76), and mostly clean but useless. There is a tiny blip on Sunday the 19th with 4 ft from the S, but period is only 5 seconds, and combined energy is 352 (moderate) – still called poor surf conditions. Not worth getting excited over.
So, if you’re desperate, the best shot is Saturday morning, the 11th of July at Happys – clean, small, but rideable. After that? Grab a coffee and wait for a proper swell.
Rusty.
