The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. I’m lookin’ at the next couple of weeks for Happys, and honestly, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for decent waves. We’ve got a big gap of poor conditions right from the start, and it barely lets up.
It kicks off Saturday the 18th with a messy 8 ft swell from the southeast, but that wind is howling from the south at 22 mph, straight cross. Combined energy is a hefty 1381 (moderate to strong), but it’s all blown out—lumpy cross-chop, no good for a paddle. Sunday the 19th gets worse: 13 ft of south-east swell, but the wind screams even stronger at 28 mph, making it a total washout. That’s big, raw power (2833 combined energy), but it’s only for the brave or the foolish.
Monday the 20th through Wednesday the 23rd is a slow grind. Swell drops from 12 ft down to 4 ft, but the wind stays cross or cross-onshore, keeping everything choppy and messy. There’s a tiny window on Thursday morning the 23rd where the wind goes light cross-off and the surf cleans up with 4 ft from the east, but it’s weak (164 combined energy) and short period (8 seconds). It’s “surfable but very ordinary.” Not worth paddling out for.
Then Friday the 24th throws another spike—10 ft from the southeast with 22 mph cross-wind. That’s 914 energy, but again, it’s lumpy and ugly. From there, it’s a slow fade into the end of July and early August. Swell drops below 3 ft, periods get short, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore. There’s a couple of glassy moments on the morning of Tuesday the 28th and Saturday the 1st of August, but with only 2 ft to 3 ft of weak east swell (energy around 40-230), it’s barely a ripple. The 13-second period on the 31st is a tease, but it’s blown out by rain and cross-shore wind.
Water temp at the start is 69°, which is about normal for this time of year. No anomalies to get excited about.
Bottom line: there’s no standout, no hidden gem, no reason to rush. If you’re desperate, that Thursday morning the 23rd or the glassy morning of the 1st of August might give you a limp wave, but honestly, I’d leave the board in the car and go do something else. This is a blank run, plain and simple. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s grim.
