The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down what’s going on at Happys. This is a point break, pretty sheltered, and likes swell from the NE – but most of what we’re seeing is coming from the ENE or E, so it’s a bit off the ideal angle.
First up, water temp is 68°F. That’s 2°F colder than average for this time, so you’ll feel that chill on the paddle out.
We start on Sunday, August 23 with tiny weak swell – about 3ft from the ENE, short 8-second period. Combined energy is 105 (moderate), but with a light cross-shore wind, the conditions are just poor. Nothing to get excited about. That theme sticks for the first few days – Monday and Tuesday morning get a little glassy on the 25th, early, with 3ft from the E, 8 seconds, energy 142 (moderate), but it’s only just surfable. The afternoons turn into chop.
From Thursday the 27th through to the end of the month, it’s mostly cross-shore and cross-onshore winds blowing 12-16 mph, with small short-period swell (3ft to 4ft, 6 to 8 seconds). The ocean looks messy and uninviting.
The one real standout in the whole 16-day forecast lands on Friday the 4th of September, morning. Light offshore wind from the N at 6 mph, clearing conditions, swell 3ft from the ENE, 9-second period, combined energy at 162 (moderate). That cross-offshore wind will groom the waves nicely. It’s not huge, but it’s clean and makeable – this is your best bet.
After that, the second week tanks into small, wind-affected slop – 2ft to 3ft, short period, poor conditions. It’s a long dry spell sandwiched around that one Friday.
For beginners: the swell never tops 5ft, so it’s manageable in size, but the quality is so low most days it’s not worth the effort. If you’re a kiter, there might be some wind-powered fun in the bigger breezy afternoons, but for paddle surfing, it’s mostly a bust.
Bottom line: if you can, hit the morning of Friday the 4th – it’s the only real window of decent, clean surf. Otherwise, the forecast is a long stretch of meh.
Rusty.
