The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Happys.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks look pretty grim for a proper paddle session. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for quality surf. The first decent swell isn't even on the radar until the 25th of July, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. We’re looking at a solid 10-day gap from the start of the forecast until we see anything worth getting wet for.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Wednesday 15th to Friday 24th July – Forget it. We’ve got tiny swell at best, and when it does show up, it’s accompanied by nasty cross-shore and cross-onshore winds that are gonna chop it to bits. From the 16th through the 20th, the swell gets big—over 8ft—but it’s all wrapped in strong, messy wind. The combined energy hits some crazy numbers (up to 2806), but that’s just raw power with no shape. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than anything else. The period is short, mostly 7–10 seconds, so it’s not going to hold any kind of line. Surf quality is consistently rated as poor.
Saturday 25th July – This is the only day that even gets a sniff of a recommendation. We’ve got a 8ft to 8ft SE swell, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (734 to 1079). The wind is a cross-shore, which is the best we’ll see, but it’s still a moderate breeze. The waves will be a bit lumpy with cross-chop. This is big enough for experienced surfers only—over 8ft at the top end. It’s a point break that’s fairly consistent, but with that short period, it’s not going to be the clean, peeling line you’d hope for. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
Sunday 26th to Tuesday 30th July – The swell drops back down, and the cross-onshore winds return. The period improves a bit to 11 seconds in the last few days, but the wind never plays ball. The energy is weak to moderate (227 to 417). It’s a frustrating end to the outlook.
The best bet in this whole sorry mess is the morning of the 25th, but only if you’re an experienced surfer who doesn’t mind a bit of chop and a crowd. Even then, it’s marginal.
Rusty.
