Table - best surf conditions forecast for Happys over the next 16 days.
Right, I’ve had a look over the incoming data for Happys, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead. The first surfable recommendation doesn’t pop up until the morning of Thursday, 24 July, so we’re looking at a solid 11-day gap of nothing worth paddling out for. That’s a long stretch of flat or messy conditions.
Now, let’s talk about the spot itself. Happys is a sheltered point break, and it’s fairly consistent usually, but the wind and swell just aren’t lining up. The water temperature is sitting at 69°, which is about 1° cooler than average for this time of year – nothing too wild, just a bit on the fresh side.
The highlight of the whole forecast, the one true standout, is the morning of Thursday, 24 July. We’ve got a clean, cross-off breeze from the SSW at 9 mph, which is going to give us some tidy lines. The swell is from the east at 5ft with a period of 12 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell, long period, which means better shaped waves and more energy. It’s going to be a bit on the bigger side for beginners, but for intermediate surfers, that’s a solid session. The combined energy is 675 (moderate), so there’s enough grunt to push through. The only downside is that long-period east swell on a point break can be a bit tricky – it might not wrap in perfectly, but with that offshore wind, it’s the best we’ll see.
If you miss that morning, the morning of Tuesday, 28 July, also shows some promise. It’s a bit smaller at 3ft, but the swell period is even longer at 14 seconds, and the wind is cross-off again from the WSW at 9 mph. The combined energy is 418 (moderate), and the description says “expect good surf conditions.” It’s not a standout like the 24th, but it’s a clean window.
For the rest of the period, the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, often strong, with lumpy, choppy conditions. The swell gets big – over 12ft on the 19th and 20th – but it’s all blown out with strong onshore winds. Even with that size, the quality is poor. If you’re a kite surfer, that heavy, cross-shore chop might look fun, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.
So, mark your calendar for the morning of the 24th of July. That’s the one. The 28th is a decent backup, but it’s a long way off. Don’t hold your breath for anything else.
