The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Happy’s for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, if you are looking for a decent session at Happy’s, you are going to be waiting a long time. The next sixteen days are mostly a write-off. We’ve got a lot of onshore and cross-shore wind, and the swell just won’t clean up. There is a big gap with nothing on offer for the first week and a half, with the wind howling from the south and southeast. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
The first real chance to even think about paddling out won’t be until Thursday, July 24th. The morning is still pretty ordinary with light rain and small 4ft cross-shore swell from the east, energy is weak at 162, so nothing to get excited about. But the *afternoon* of Thursday the 24th is the only true standout in the whole forecast. The wind swings to the southwest and goes glassy, which is a major positive. That 4ft swell from the east (period 8 seconds) will be clean and smooth. It’s not big, but for a spot that’s been battered by wind, this is the one window to sneak a few clean ones. Crowds are often there though, so expect company.
The next morning, Friday the 25th, also looks okay with a light offshore cross-off breeze and that same 4ft easterly swell, but the glassy conditions of that Thursday afternoon are the real highlight. After that, it goes downhill again into the weekend and beyond, with more wind and chop. The last few days of the month show a glimmer of hope on Wednesday the 29th with a glassy morning again, but the swell is tiny and weak, and on Thursday and Friday the 30th and 31st we finally see a proper offshore wind from the west-southwest. The swell picks up a bit to 5ft from the east-northeast (8 seconds) with moderate energy of 312, and the conditions will be clean. That’s a promising end to the run, but it's a long way off, so take it with a grain of salt.
Bottom line: if you’ve got a flexible schedule, aim for the afternoon of Thursday the 24th. That’s your best bet for a clean, small-wave session at Happy’s. Otherwise, sit tight.
Rusty.
