Alright, let’s take this in feet and miles per hour.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat for Dawlish Warren. There’s a long dry spell of no real surf to speak of, so we’re looking at a big gap of almost no rideable waves at all until the second half of the period.
Starting with the first entry for Friday July 3rd, we’ve got tiny waves of just 0.3 ft from the west, but the spot is so sheltered and there’s no energy – the combined swell energy is a weak 4. The water temp is sitting at 65°F, which is 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s very unusual. You’d be floating in warm bathwater, but there’s just no surf to ride.
The rest of the first week and well into the second week is a write-off. Day after day, it’s below 2 ft, with mostly short-period slop or near-zero readings. From the 3rd of July right through until the 10th, we see nothing but flatness and poor surf conditions. The wind is often clean or light, but there’s simply no swell to work with. It’s a long stretch – over a week – of nothing worth paddling out for.
Things start to flicker a little around Friday July 10th, when we see a pulse of 3 ft from the ESE, but the period is a weak 6 seconds, and the combined energy is still only 58 (weak). The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not looking great. Then through the weekend and into the next week, we get tiny pulses again, but nothing consistent.
Now, looking at the standout – and I mean the only real standout in this entire 16-day window – comes on Thursday July 16th. That morning, we have a bit of size: 4 ft from the ESE, period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy gets up to 105 (moderate). The wind is cross-shore and light at 9 mph, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but rideable. This is really for experienced surfers or those comfortable with a little chop. The break is Dawlish Warren, and it’s an inconsistent, sheltered beginner spot. But even the 4 ft will be small compared to open beach breaks – it might be doable for a beginner, but the period is short. The winds are not perfect, but it’s the best we’ll see.
After that, the 17th and 18th drop back to waist-high slop, with glassy conditions on the 18th morning but still under 3 ft. Not much to get excited about.
So, to sum up: long, flat gap, with one faint chance of small, choppy waves on Thursday July 16th. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but it’s lean pickings right now.
Rusty.
