The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get straight into it for this neck of the woods.
Looking at the whole 16-day run, it's a pretty flat and quiet stretch. There are long, long gaps where there's nothing doing at all.
The only real glimpse of something happens on Saturday, 29th August. That morning, Dawlish Warren sees a pulse of swell – 1.4m from the SW with an 8-second period. The combined energy hits 284, which is solid. The real kicker is that the wind is offshore from the NW. That will be clean. For a spot that's usually sheltered, this is the standout.
But keep your feet on the ground. The break is inconsistent and rated for beginners. While the morning looks clean, the 1.4m swell could be a bit much for absolute beginners. The afternoon sees it drop right off and the wind swings cross-off. Before that, there's nothing worth paddling for. The water temp is 20°, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year.
After that Saturday, it's back to a blank run. The wind turns onshore and the swell dies. On the 30th and 31st of August, the wind gets strong and messy, making it more of a kitesurfer's setup than a paddle surfer's. The first week of September doesn't offer any change.
So the takeaway is simple: if you are desperate, the morning of the 29th is your only window. Otherwise, keep the board in the van.
Rusty.
