The Lowdown
Right then, let’s be straight with you. I’ve looked over the charts for the next sixteen days, and the honest truth is there’s nothing on the cards for Dawlish Warren. The whole period is a total flat spell with no surfable waves to speak of.
The water temperature is sitting at 68° – that’s a good 7° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual. The sea’s got a warm bath feel to it, but there’s no energy to back it up. The combined energy of all swells directed here never gets above a weak 62. That’s barely a bump on the surface.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday morning the 15th has a weak 3ft easterly windswell with a short 6-second period, but it’s ruined by a 16 mph cross-shore wind. It’s a messy, choppy mess. The afternoon dies to nothing. Thursday the 16th is the same story – a tiny bit of height on the morning but the wind is off. Friday the 17th through to the end of July is a constant run of tiny, weak swells, rarely breaking 2ft, with periods all over the shop but mostly short and weak. The wind is never clean and offshore for any decent swell. There are a few glassy moments on the morning of the 20th and the morning of the 25th, but with only 0.7ft and 0.3ft of swell respectively, you’d be bobbing about on a millpond.
The break itself is sheltered and inconsistent, and for a beginner-friendly spot, it needs a bit of push. This stretch of weather offers none. It’s a blank run – and for this area, that’s not unusual. It’s one of those times you just have to wait for the charts to change. Forecasts can turn around, but right now, I’d keep the board in the car and the wetsuit dry.
