The Lowdown
Rusty here again. I'm looking at the same picture, but I'll give it to you in feet and miles per hour, because that's how some of us like to read it.
It’s a rough one, folks. If you’re hoping to get wet for a proper surf, you are looking at a long, flat stretch ahead.
Starting right now on Sunday, the 23rd of August, Dawlish Warren (Dawlish-Warren) has got absolutely nothing. We're talking a tiny 0.3ft wave out of the south, a cross-on wind, and the water is feeling a whole lot warmer than usual at 68°F – that's a massive 5°F above what you’d expect for this time of year. The energy in the water is just pathetic at a 9. That’s not surfing; that’s floating.
The whole of next week and into the following week is a total bust. From Monday the 24th right through to Monday the 7th of September, every single report is labelled “poor surf conditions.” There are a couple of moments that almost tease you. On Sunday the 30th of August afternoon, we get a glassy period with a 4ft swell. But it’s bumpy with a 5-second period (short period) and the energy is only 66. It would be weak and wobbly.
There is a brief moment on Friday the 4th of September morning with a clean offshore wind from the NW at 15 mph and a 2ft swell, but the period is a useless 3 seconds. That's just wind-ripple. The energy is just 13. Complete disappointment.
The only time the wave energy climbs into a moderate range is Monday the 31st of August afternoon (143) and on the 5th of September morning (115) and afternoon (155). But look at the wind on the 5th of September – it’s blowing a strong cross-onshore at 25 mph in the afternoon with a 5ft swell and a short 6-second period. That’s just a messy, lumpy ocean. For a kite, maybe, but for a surfboard? Forget it.
So, bottom line: there are no standout days. No clean, lined-up swell with the right wind. The water is strangely warm, but that’s about all we’ve got. This is a proper dry spell. We’re looking at a blank two weeks. Hang up your wettie and wait for the next system.
Rusty.
