Alright, grab a coffee, mate. Rusty here, and I’m gonna level with you about Coney Beach. I’ve looked over the charts and the next couple of weeks, and it’s not exactly a story of pumping barrels. In fact, it is a lean period ahead.
To be honest, for the full 16-day stretch from July 4th through to the 19th, there isn’t a single session I’d be stoked to paddle out for. Every single slot comes back labeled as "poor surf conditions" with energy readings that are genuinely anemic. We’re looking at a wall of flatness with combined wave energy mostly in the single digits and low double-digits – meaning essentially no power behind the waves. The swell heights just don’t get above 2 feet, and for most of it, they’re hovering around 0.7 feet to 1 feet. That’s knee-high dribble at best.
So, for the first full weekend of July, from Saturday the 4th to Monday the 6th, the wave height you’d be looking at is a pretty sad 1.0 foot to 2 feet, mostly straight from the West or WSW. The wind is cross or cross-off most of the time, which would at least make the water surface look okay, but with no swell height or period (often under 9 seconds), you’d be bobbing around more than riding. As we head into the middle of July, around the 8th and 9th, we actually get a bit of glassy wind – a total glass-off on the afternoon of the 9th with a 3 mph NE breeze. It’d be flat as a pancake with only 0.7 foot waves, but beautiful surface conditions if you just wanted to sit on a board. That’s about the only silver lining.
The situation doesn't really improve. There's a small bump in energy on the 14th (Tuesday afternoon) where the combined energy climbs, and we get a 2 foot cross-off, but that’s still tiny. Even the offshore winds that show up on the 13th and 17th with some fresh NW breezes (up to 22 mph) are blowing over puddles. The swell is just not there. For wave hunters, the entire second week is a write-off too; everything stays below 1 feet with weak, short-period windswell.
Given the break is classed as "fairly consistent" normally, a long flat spell like this is a proper bummer. Honestly, with such small, weak surf and consistent wind, this setup from the 4th of July onward actually looks more interesting for a kite surfer with a big kite than someone trying to get a surfboard wet. There’s just nothing to recommend here for a proper paddle surfer.
This is a wait-and-see period. Hang loose and check back, because it can’t stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
