The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s break down what’s in store for our local waters.
Honestly, the next 16 days are looking pretty bleak for surf. We’ve got a long dry spell through the first week, and even when a bit of energy shows up, the wind is fighting us. The water is running at 69° – that’s a full 8° warmer than usual, which is very unusual. It’s more like a lake than an ocean right now.
From Tuesday, 18 August, right through the end of the month, the surf is tiny. We’re looking at nothing above 4ft, with most days offering barely a bump. The wind is mostly cross-off or light, so the surface is clean, but there’s just no power. The combined wave energy is weak, with values mostly in the double digits – like 110 on Tuesday morning, 72 in the afternoon, and dropping to 51 on Wednesday. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple. On Sunday, 23 August, we get a brief moment of glassy conditions in the morning, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft, with period at 9 seconds. That’s not surfable.
Then we roll into the second week. There’s a bit of a pulse on Tuesday, 25 August, with a 6ft swell from the SW, period around 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 755 (moderate energy), but it’s mostly a cross-onshore wind from the ESE at 19 mph, making it lumpy and messy. That’s not a day for a standard paddle board. That setup, with fresh wind and a beach break, is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The rest of the week into early September stays small, with the swell dropping back to under 3ft. The wind is a mixed bag, but nothing lines up. Even on 1 September, when we get a 4ft swell from the WSW (period a short 6 seconds) and a combined energy of 104, the wind is cross-shore and bumpy. It’s poor.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is Tuesday, 25 August morning. The swell is the biggest we’ll see, at 6ft, from the SW, with a period of 9 seconds. The energy is there (755). But that wind is a killer. If you’re desperate, you might find a bank that’s holding, but it’s not going to be pretty. The best call is to wait for the next window.
Stay patient.
