The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. It’s a tough stretch for us at Porthcawl Point. The whole 16-day window looks like a write-off for any proper surf. We’re looking at a long, dry gap. The first few days are a total washout, and honestly, there’s no real pick of the bunch.

Right out of the gate, Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are flat and messy. Tiny swell, maybe 1 ft to 3 ft, with a short, weak period of 4 to 5 seconds. The combined energy is pathetic (13 to 24), and we’ve got onshore winds making it choppy and poor. Not a single wave worth paddling for.

The weekend doesn’t save us either. Friday the 31st through to Sunday the 4th of August is the same story. The swell stays tiny, mostly under 2 ft, with wind directions all over the shop. There’s a moment on Sunday the 2nd with glassy conditions, but the swell is only 1.0 ft with a combined energy of just 13 to 14. You’d be bobbing around doing nothing.

The whole first week is a total blank. There is no surf to recommend.

Towards the end of the second week, things try to change. On Friday the 7th of August, we finally see a bump in swell height to 5 ft and 6 ft, with a period of 7 to 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 207 and 547, which is moderate to strong. But the wind is cross-onshore from the W at 9-15 mph, making it choppy and messy. The surf report says “poor surf conditions” for these sessions.

Saturday the 8th of August offers the only real glimmer of hope. The morning has a 4 ft swell from the WSW (8-second period) with a clean cross-offshore easterly breeze at 6 mph. The combined energy is 211 (moderate). The afternoon is similar, with 4 ft swell and 172 energy. The report calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not a standout—it’s just the best of a bad lot. The wind is clean, but the swell is small and ordinary.

After that, it drops back into the doldrums. The 9th of August onward sees the swell fade back to 2 ft or less, with weak energy. There’s a glassy morning on the 11th of August with 4 ft swell, but it’s short period (8 seconds) and the energy is only 131. It’s a surfable ankle-to-knee-high day, but nothing to get excited about.

The bottom line is: there’s *nothing* on offer that’s worth chasing. The water temperature was 69°F with a 8°F anomaly on the 29th of July, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s all the novelty we get. The surf just isn’t here. If you’re desperate for a paddle, Saturday the 8th of August is your best bet with clean winds and some waist-high swell, but keep your expectations low. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a bust.

Rusty.
