The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Well, I’ve had a good look at the charts for the Broughton stretch, and I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim run for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing worth paddling out for until we get into Thursday the 27th of August, and even then, it’s barely a whisper. The swell energy is next to nothing for over a week, just weak little wind slop.
The first real blip on the radar shows up on Thursday morning the 27th of August. Broughton (a point break) will see a tiny 3ft swell from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is a moderate 161, so there’s a bit of weight behind it, but the wind is a light offshore from the SE. That will keep things clean, but the size is small. It’s only for the experienced crew who can work a small wave. After a weak afternoon, the run goes quiet again.
The next day, Friday the 28th of August, is a write-off with onshore wind and poor conditions. The weekend of the 29th and 30th is also a no-go, with messy cross-on winds and lumpy surf.
Now, here’s the only proper window to get excited about. We’ve got a pulse of better swell arriving on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Wednesday morning is marginal, with a 6ft swell from the WSW (period 10 seconds) and a moderate cross-off wind from the S. The energy jumps to a strong 505. But it’s the Wednesday afternoon (2nd of September) that is our standout. The same 6ft swell with a 10-second period is clean, with a light cross-off breeze from the SSW. Combined energy is a strong 598 – that’s proper wave energy. This will be the best of the entire forecast. Still, at 6ft, it’s pushing the limits for beginners; it’s more of a solid fun wave for competent surfers. Crowds are possible here at times, so expect a few others to have the same idea.
Thursday the 3rd of September sees a bigger pulse – a 8ft swell from the WSW with an 11-second period – but the energy is very strong at 2124. The wind is a strong cross-off from the SSE though (22 mph), making it a tough, blustery session only for experts. The afternoon drops to 6ft but still clean and cross-off, so there are still waves if you want a challenge.
After that, it fades away again into the second week, with small, weak surf and mostly onshore winds. No other standout days.
So to sum it up: the first week is mostly a waste. Don’t bother until Wednesday the 2nd of September. That afternoon is your best bet for a clean, fun session at Broughton. The bigger Thursday the 3rd is for the brave only.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the sky. Rusty.
