The Lowdown
Alright, I’ve looked at what’s coming for us over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be honest with you, mate, it’s a tough run. The swell is tiny, and the wind is all over the shop. You’ll be waiting a good while for anything that’s even worth a look.
The first real chance to get a board wet doesn’t come until Thursday, the 27th of August. And even then, it’s a bit of a trade-off. A little pulse of energy pushes through with a combined swell energy of 158, so there’s something to work with, but that comes with a strong southerly breeze at 25 mph which will mess things up. The wind is cross-shore, so it’s not going to be clean. The swell is showing as 5ft from the ESE with a short 6-second period, so it’s going to be soft and messy. This one is really more for the kite crew than us paddle surfers, especially at a beach break like Coastguard Beach.
If you’ve got patience, the best window we’ve got is at the very end of the run. On Saturday, the 29th of August, we finally get a proper offshore breeze. The wind swings to the west, blowing at 9 mph, giving us that clean, lined-up look. The swell is tiny, only 2ft from the SE with a 7-second period, so it’s not going to be a world-beater, but it’s about as good as it gets. The water’s sitting at 70°, which is about 2° warmer than normal for this time of year, so pretty comfortable.
Sunday the 30th of August has a slight bump in swell height to 2ft from the NE, but the period is only 4 seconds and the wind goes cross-shore in the afternoon, so it’s a short-lived window.
Other than that, we’ve got a long stretch of small, wind-affected, or onshore slop from Wednesday the 19th all the way through to about Wednesday the 26th of August. The 31st of August has a clean cross-off breeze but again, tiny swell at 1ft. The first few days of September are looking blown out and messy too.
It’s a lean period, no doubt. The swell energy is consistently weak, mostly sitting in the single or double digits, only spiking slightly on the 27th. The consistency is there, but it’s always small. We’ll just have to wait for a change in the forecast.
Rusty.
