The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. I’ve taken a look at what’s coming up for Coastguard Beach over the next couple of weeks, and I’ll be straight with you – this is a quiet stretch where you’ll be scanning the ocean more than riding it. The whole 16‑day window has little to offer, with a long flat gap and only one brief moment of surfable waves right at the end. Let’s go day by day.
Starting Saturday, 22nd August, the morning shows a weak 3ft swell from the ENE with a short 5‑second period and cross‑onshore wind at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy – combined energy is only 85, so barely any push. The afternoon cleans up a little with cross‑offshore wind, but the swell drops to 3ft and energy’s down to 35. Not enough to bother.
Sunday, 23rd August, the swell shrinks to 0.7ft with a long 12‑second period, but the energy is tiny (15–30) and wind is messy. Monday and Tuesday stay tiny – 0.7–1ft with cleanish cross‑offshore winds, but wave energy in the single digits to low 30s. Nothing that will move you.
Wednesday morning, 26th August, we get a clean offshore wind from the W at 9 mph, but the swell is only 1.0ft from the ESE with a 9‑second period and combined energy of 22. It’s clean, yes, but essentially flat. The pattern holds through Friday, 28th August – tiny swell, weak energy (15–16), and occasional cross‑onshore chop. No dice.
The first week of September brings a small glimmer. Tuesday, 1st September afternoon: a gusty offshore from the WNW at 9 mph, and the swell climbs to 4ft from the N with a short 5‑second period. Combined energy reaches 70 – still weak but rideable. The waves are “surfable but very ordinary,” so it’s a small window if you’re keen.
Wednesday morning, 2nd September, is the best of the entire outlook. Offshore W wind at 9 mph, swell 4ft from the NNE with a short 6‑second period, but the combined energy jumps to 122 – that’s moderate energy, the first real sign of life. The waves will be clean with gentle offshore conditions, and while it’s nothing special, it’s the standout here. The swell direction (NNE) isn’t a perfect match for Coastguard Beach’s optimum SE, but with clean wind and waist‑high to chest‑high sets, it’s your best chance.
From Wednesday afternoon onward, it fades again. The 22 mph SW cross‑offshore on Wednesday afternoon blows the energy (115) but the swell from the NE is only 3ft and period 7 seconds – not terrible, but the wind is fresh and creates chop. Thursday and Friday (3rd–4th September) go back to tiny 0.7–1.0ft with weak energy (10–20), and Saturday 5th September stays small with cross‑onshore chop. Sunday 6th September is a washout: 0.7ft from the S, 8‑second period, and a fresh 19 mph NE cross‑onshore making it lumpy.
So, bottom line: if you’re looking for proper waves, leave the board home. The only morning that offers a chance is Wednesday, 2nd September, early, when the wind is offshore and there’s just enough energy (122) to get a few clean little runners. It’s beginner‑friendly at 4ft, so safe for learners, but don’t expect any power. Otherwise, this whole stretch is a flat spell with no real standout. It’s normal around here when the cards line up this way – you just wait for the next pulse.
Stay patient, keep watching the horizon. I’m Rusty.
