The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s happening at Coastguard Beach.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty tough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off for any decent surf. There’s really nothing to get excited about. The first surf recommendation pops up on Tuesday the 18th of August, but it’s not a pretty picture. We’re looking at tiny, weak swell with poor conditions right from the start.
Tuesday morning the 18th sees a weak 1 ft SE swell with a short 8-second period, and the combined wave energy is a measly 30 (weak). The wind is a cross-on from the NNE at 12 mph, and the water temp is a touch warmer than average at 71°. It’s choppy and messy – not worth paddling out for.
Wednesday the 19th is cleaner with some offshore wind, but the swell is still tiny at 1 ft, and the period drops to a pathetic 6 seconds. Wave energy is even lower (19 and 15). It’s clean but just not surfable.
The pattern continues right through the next week. Swell heights barely nudge past 2 ft, and periods stay short. The wind flips around from onshore to cross-off, but the lack of any real energy is the killer. There is a little bump of 3 ft swell on Friday the 28th of August, coming from the NNE with a 5-second period. The combined energy hits 100 (moderate) in the morning and 141 (moderate) in the afternoon. But the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, making it lumpy and messy. It’s a bad combo – small, weak, wind-affected junk.
The biggest pulse of the whole forecast hits on Sunday the 30th of August. The swell height is only 2 ft to 3 ft, but the period jumps to a very long 16 seconds coming from the E. The combined energy rockets up to 470 (strong). Sounds good on paper, but with a howling near gale cross-shore wind at 34 mph turning into a strong breeze at 28 mph, the ocean will be a complete washing machine. For a beach break like Coastguard, that long period groundswell will break straight and get torn apart by the wind. This setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Definitely not for a beginner, and not even worth it for most.
We then limp through to the 2nd of September with tiny, weak swell and clean but useless conditions.
There’s no standout day here, no hidden gem. The best on offer would be that Wednesday the 19th if you just want to sit on a board in clean, small conditions, but you won’t catch a wave. And that Sunday the 30th has the energy, but the wind ruins it completely.
Rusty.
