The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at the charts for Coastguard Beach over the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s looking pretty bleak. There’s no real surf to get excited about for the entire 16-day window. The models are showing tiny, weak energy and the wave comment stays as “poor surf conditions” right through. It’s a tough run.

For a beginner-friendly, consistent spot like this, it’s a bit of a bummer, but it’s not unusual for this area to have blank spells. Forecasts can change, so don’t lose all hope, but as it stands, there’s nothing worth paddling out for.

Let’s walk through it. The first record kicks off Sunday, the 23rd of August, with a tiny 0.7ft swell from the east, a measly 12-second period, and combined energy of just 34 – that’s weak. The wind is a cross-onshore from the SE at 12 mph, so it’s choppy and messy. Not a chance.

Monday the 24th shows a bit of swell bumping up to 2ft from the southeast, but the period is a shocking 6 seconds – that’s short-period wind slop. The wind does turn cross-offshore from the southwest at 12 mph, giving clean conditions, but there’s no power behind it. It’s just not enough to ride.

That same story plays out for days. Tuesday the 25th has 1.0ft, Wednesday the 26th has 1ft with a slight improvement in period to 8 seconds and a nice offshore wind from the west at 9 mph. The water is clean, but the energy is still pathetic at 24. Thursday the 27th is a flat 1.0ft again, with glassy conditions in the morning from a light SW breeze – still nothing.

Friday the 28th sees a tiny bump to 3ft, but it’s from the SE with a 4-second period and a cross-onshore wind making it choppy. That’s a waste of time.

Saturday the 29th is a bit cleaner with 2ft from the southeast and a 7-second period, cross-offshore winds from the SSW at 6 mph in the morning. It’s clean but gutless – combined energy of only 32. You could possibly get a knee-high ripple, but it’s not surf.

The second week doesn’t get any better. From the 30th of August right through to the 7th of September, the swell barely nudges above 3ft. There’s a brief moment on the 1st of September with a 2ft swell from the north-northeast, but it’s a 4-second period – absolutely no power. The combined energy for that one is 55, still weak.

On the 4th and 5th of September, the swell height sits around 2ft to 3ft, but the wind is fresh and cross-shore, making it lumpy and messy. On the 5th of September afternoon, the combined energy jumps to 238 from a 2ft south-southeast swell with a 12-second period – that’s moderate energy for the first time, but the wind is a strong cross-shore at 25 mph, creating a messy cross-chop. Unridable.

The 6th and 7th of September keep the same pattern: moderate combined energy in the 150-168 range from 2ft to 3ft southeast swells, but the wind is cross-shore and the wave comment is still “poor surf conditions.” Not worth it.

Honestly, there is no standout here. No break to highlight. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the cleanest windows are the mornings with offshore winds, like Wednesday the 26th of August or Saturday the 29th of August, but you’d be floating more than surfing. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during the windier days later in the window, but for a surfboard, it’s a hard pass.

Stay patient, mate. These flat spells don’t last forever.

Rusty.
