The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for Coastguard Beach.
Straight up, I’ve got to be honest with you—this is a tough stretch. The forecast window is 16 days long, and there’s not a single recommended session in the whole run. The first few days are a write-off with tiny swell, barely a ripple. From Sunday 23 August right through to the end of the first week, we’re looking at swell heights mostly between 0.7 ft and 1 ft, with the odd 2 ft or 2 ft popping up. The wave energy is real weak, barely registering with values like 22 (combined energy of all swells directed here), and it stays that way for days. You’ll get some clean-looking conditions on Monday 24 August morning with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell’s just too small to push anything worth paddling for.
The water temperature is sitting at 69°, which is 2° warmer than the long-term average for this time of year—nothing unusual, just a normal summer water temp.
Midway through the second week, things start to look a bit more energetic. On Wednesday 2 September, we see a jump to 5 ft swell from the northeast, with the combined energy hitting 206 and 211—moderate energy now, but the wind is onshore or cross-shore, and the conditions are still described as poor. The swell direction is northeast, but the optimum swell direction for Coastguard Beach is southeast, so it’s an awkward angle. The period is short too, around 6 to 7 seconds, which means the waves will be weak and crumbly with no real punch.
The energy keeps building into 4 September, with a 4 ft northeast swell at 9 seconds in the morning (energy 341), and then a 3 ft swell from the southeast at 12 seconds in the afternoon (energy 420). That’s the strongest energy we see in the whole period, but it’s still not making the call for a good surf. Crowds are noted as “sometimes” at Coastguard Beach, but there’s nothing to crowd anyone in this window.
The period to watch is late in the second week, around 4 September, when the swell direction shifts to southeast and the period stretches to 12 seconds—that’s a better angle for the break and a longer period groundswell, which can mean more energy in the water. But the wind is cross-shore, so it’s not clean, and the overall wave comment is still “poor surf conditions.”
Honestly, the whole 16-day window is a blank run. There’s no standout session, no day to circle on the calendar. For a spot that’s usually consistent, this is a quiet spell. In conditions like this, with bigger swell and messy wind, the setup at Coastguard Beach—a beach break—might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, because things can change quick, but right now, I’d say leave the board in the car and go for a walk instead.
Rusty.
