The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s break down what we’re looking at for the Coastguard Beach area over the next couple of weeks.
This is a slow start, no doubt about it. From right now, Sunday the 23rd of August, all the way through to the end of the month and into the first days of September, there’s basically nothing. A full ten days of tiny surf and shifty winds. You might as well leave the board in the garage.
Things finally stir on Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September. The wind goes dead calm – pure glass. We’ve got a tiny 1-foot swell from the ENE with a 13-second period. The combined swell energy is weak, at 64, but the conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a novelty wave, a knee-high wafter, but if you’re jonesing, it’s the first thing that’s remotely rideable. Water temp is about 69°F, which is pretty average for this time of year.
Now, the real standout is the weekend of the 5th and 6th of September. This is what we’re waiting for, but it’s over a week out, so keep your expectations in check.
Saturday morning, the 5th of September, brings a 4-foot swell from the NE with a short 6-second period. The combined energy is a solid 366, which is moderate. The wind is light and clean from the SSW, making it cross-offshore. The forecast calls for “good surf conditions.” For a beach break, that short period might make things a little crumbly, but with that clean wind, it’ll be the best session in ages. That size is fun for intermediates, but beginners might find it a little pushy.
Sunday morning, the 6th of September, is the absolute best of the whole outlook. We score offshore wind from the W at just under 10 mph, giving us a clean, glassy face. The swell is a solid 4 feet from the ENE with a much better 11-second period. The combined energy is strong at 589. The model says “expect very good surf conditions.” That offshore breeze is gold, it’ll hold the waves up and make ‘em clean. This is the session to plan for.
After that, it’s all downhill again. Monday the 7th sees the swell drop and the wind pick up, shutting the window.
So, to sum it up: ten days of flatness, a tiny glassy wave on the 2nd, and then a proper clean weekend on the 5th and 6th. Sunday the 6th is your best bet.
Rusty.
