The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Well, lookin’ at the charts for Coastguard Beach, it’s a pretty grim stretch of days ahead, I gotta be honest. We’re talkin’ about a solid 16-day window and, to be blunt, there’s barely a whisper of proper surf. The first real chance to even wet a line comes on Wednesday the 22nd, but even then, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Let’s run through it.
The big story for the first week is tiny, weak swell. From Friday the 17th all the way through Tuesday the 22nd, we’re lookin’ at knee-high dribble at best, with combined wave energy barely crackin’ double digits most days – think 7, 9, 5, 7, 26, 22, 15, 17, 39... just nothin’ to get out of bed for. Winds are a real mess too, with a lot of cross-off and cross-on breezes, and a few glassy moments on Monday the 20th morning, but with only 1ft of swell, it’s a flat, glassy lake. Not a single wave worth paddling for.
Then comes Wednesday the 22nd. Now, this is the one day that has a bit of grunt. The swell lifts to 5ft from the South, with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 235 (moderate). The wind is a strong cross-off from the SW at 22 mph, so it’ll be clean. But here’s the thing – that 5ft is the top of the beginner range, and it’s super short period, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and dumpy. For a stronger surfer, there’s a fun, punchy wave there, but it ain’t gonna be pretty. The afternoon drops to 4ft with a longer 10-second period from the SE, still with that 235 energy, but the wind stays strong and cross-off. I’d call Wednesday the 22nd the standout, but it’s a rough diamond.
After that, Thursday the 23rd delivers a brief flicker: 3ft from the SE (10 seconds) with a light offshore WSW wind at 6 mph. The energy is 134 (moderate), and it’s clean. You’d get a few chest-high waves, but it’s "surfable but very ordinary." Then it’s back to the small stuff. Saturday the 25th morning has a 2ft S swell (8 seconds, 135 energy) with a light offshore W breeze – clean, but tiny.
The second week is a total write-off. From Sunday the 26th all the way through to Saturday the 1st of August, it’s nothing but 0.7ft to 2ft slop, with combined energy mostly under 60. Winds are a mix of cross-on, cross-off, and strong breezes. There’s a brief moment on Wednesday the 29th morning with 2ft from the E (10 seconds, 59 energy) and a cross-off, but it’s still just poor. Don’t hold your breath.
The water temp is sittin’ around 68°F, which is about average for the time of year with a 1°F anomaly – nothin’ unusual there.
So, the honest truth? The only half-decent option is Wednesday the 22nd for a stronger surfer who can handle a bit of a grumpy, short-period swell with strong wind. For everyone else, this is a 16-day gap of near-nothing. It’s a tough run, but forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it, but I wouldn’t be waxing up just yet.
Rusty.
