The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty quiet stretch ahead for our corner of the coast. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out run of tiny or weak surf for the next couple of weeks. The first real glimmer of something rideable doesn't show up until the very end of the run, so don't get your hopes up for any quick fixes.
Starting now, we’ve got a whole lot of nothing. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, it’s a wasteland. Swell heights barely tickle 3ft, and most of the time they’re sitting below 2ft. The combined wave energy is weak, often reading in the single digits or low tens (like 31, 52, 78) – just no grunt behind it. The winds are a mixed bag, mostly onshore or cross, and the water temp is sitting at a pretty normal 69°F for this time of year. There are a few brief moments of glassy conditions on Saturday the 22nd afternoon, but with only 2ft of weak, short-period swell, it’s barely a ripple.
There is a big gap with no surf worth mentioning until we hit the first couple of days of September. The swell does try to build a little around the 3rd and 4th, but the conditions are still messy.
The one and only spot worth a mention is Coastguard Beach. Towards the end of the run, on the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September, we finally see some pulse. The swell pushes up to 4ft from the ESE, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps into the moderate range at 299. The wind is cross-on from the ESE though, so it’ll be choppy. The afternoon of the 3rd sees similar size (4ft) but with direct onshore wind, which isn’t ideal.
The best chance of the whole outlook lands on Friday the 4th of September. Still at Coastguard Beach, we’ve got that same 4ft swell from the ESE, with the period hanging at 8 seconds. The energy is still moderate (280-267). The key difference is the wind shifts to a cross-offshore from the NNW in the afternoon, cleaning the face up nicely. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, so this size (4ft) is perfect for that crew, and it’s consistent, so you won’t be waiting forever. Just keep in mind, it can get crowded here sometimes.
Overall, this is a lean period. The good news is the end of the forecast window shows a hint of life, so keep an eye on the charts for any changes. For now, save your wax.
Rusty.
