The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s be real – this forecast is a bummer. We’re looking at a long stretch of flatness with almost nothing to get excited about. The first real chance of a wave doesn’t show up until late in the game.
For the first week and a half, from now through the end of August, it’s a flat and messy picture. Swell heights barely touch 3 feet, and when they do, the wind is all over the place – cross-on, cross-shore, or just plain strong. The combined wave energy is weak, sitting in the low double digits to the 30s and 40s, which tells you there’s no power in the water. The only clean conditions come from the cross-offshore winds on the 24th and 25th, but with swell barely at 1 feet and a short period of 6 seconds, it’s a paddle, not a surf. The water temp is about 69°F early on, right around normal for this time of year.
Things get a little interesting, but not by much, on Sunday the 30th of August. Coastguard Beach sees a brief moment of glassy conditions in the morning. The swell is only 3 feet, coming from the NNE at a short 6 seconds, and the energy is still low at 65. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. It’s the cleanest we’ll see in a while, but it’s not a standout.
Then we hit a proper gap. From the 31st of August right through to the 3rd of September, the wave heights are tiny, the energy is weak, and the conditions are just poor. Not a single session worth getting excited about.
Finally, there’s a flicker of life on the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. We get a bump in swell to 4 feet from the south, with a short period of 5 seconds, but the energy climbs to 115 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, keeping things reasonably clean. It’s still not a classic, and the short period means it won’t have much push, but it’s the most surfable we’ve seen in a fortnight. It’s the only real standout in this whole outlook, and it’s a very low bar. For a beginner, the 3 and 4 foot days are the only ones even worth considering, but don’t expect any magic.
Truth is, with such a consistent break and barely any surf, it’s one of those blank runs that happens. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
