The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are going to test your patience if you're looking to get wet. We've got a long stretch of small, weak surf with a lot of wind messing things up. It's not a total write-off, but you're going to have to pick your moments.
The water at Coastguard Beach is sitting at a warm 71°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice little bonus when the waves are struggling.
The pattern starts with very small, short-period swell. Monday afternoon the 17th has some waves around 2ft but a cross-on wind is making it choppy and poor. Tuesday the 18th is a bit cleaner in the afternoon, with the wind turning cross-off, but the swell drops to 2ft and the energy is weak at 42. It’s rideable on a longboard, but you won’t be doing much more than cruising.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are smaller, down to 1ft. The highlight there is Thursday morning, the 20th. The wind goes glassy, and the swell has a bit more period on it. It’s tiny, but it’ll be the cleanest surf of the first week. For a beginner or someone on a foamie, that might be the call.
Then the wind turns onshore and picks up. From Friday the 21st through the weekend, we've got onshore winds and building chop. The swell bumps up a little, hitting 3ft on Saturday the 22nd, but the wind is going to make it a complete mess. That Saturday is looking more like a kite-surfing day than a surfing day, to be honest.
We get a little breather on Monday the 24th with another glassy morning, but the swell is back down to 1ft. It’s a similar story to Thursday – clean but tiny.
After that, it’s a long, frustrating run. From the 25th through the 1st of September, we have a big gap of nothing but poor, small, and lumpy conditions. The swell stays under 2ft for the most part, but the wind is relentless, blowing fresh and onshore. There’s one interesting blip on the 26th and 27th, where we see the energy jump to 108 and then 260, with the swell period getting up to 14 and 15 seconds. But the waves are still small, around 2ft to 2ft. That long-period groundswell is hitting, but there's just not enough size to make it worthwhile, especially at a beach break like this. It’ll be lining up but closing out on itself.
The only slightly more interesting day in this whole run is the 27th of August in the afternoon. The swell jumps to 4ft, and the wind is cross-off, cleaning it up. That long-period swell at 6 seconds is a bit low, but it’s the biggest and cleanest wave of the entire forecast period. It’s still marginal, but if you're desperate, that’s your window.
Everything after that is a continuation of the small, onshore, lumpy theme right through to the 1st of September.
So, to be straight with you, there are no standout days here. The best on offer is Thursday the 20th for a glassy, tiny session, and the 27th in the afternoon if you want a bit more push and don't mind it being a bit rough around the edges. Keep your expectations low and your board selection wise.
Rusty.
