The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve had a good look at what we’ve got on the table for the next couple of weeks at Coastguard Beach. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty flat, frustrating picture for surfers.
We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak, and messy conditions right from the start. The water temp is sitting at about 69°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing while you sit there doing nothing.
The first recommendation isn't until Thursday the 20th of August, and even then, it's a write-off. We’re talking a tiny 1ft swell from the ESE with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak at just 30, and the morning starts glassy but with “poor surf conditions” called out. That afternoon, the wind swings S at 12 mph and the swell drops even more. Honestly, that’s not worth paddling out for.
The whole run from that first day right through to the start of September is a real struggle. The swell rarely breaks 3ft, the period is often short and weak, and there’s a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind messing it up. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are particularly grim with onshore winds and tiny, choppy waves. By Monday the 24th, we finally get a clean offshore wind from the WSW at 16 mph, but the swell has collapsed to just 0.7ft with a long period of 12 seconds. That kind of groundswell at a beach break like this means it’ll be too straight and fat to surf.
There is a bit of a pulse showing up around the 2nd and 3rd of September. On Wednesday the 2nd, we see a 3ft swell from the NNE with a 5-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 52, and the morning wind is a clean cross-off from the NNW at 9 mph. The 3rd offers a similar 3ft swell from the NE. But with that short period and onshore winds in the afternoons, it’s still not going to offer any quality. It’s just not the kind of energy that’s going to make this exposed beach break come alive.
Look, there’s no standout session here. For a beginner, the tiny 1ft or 1ft swell days with clean wind might be okay for a splash on a foamie, but there’s nothing with any power. The whole setup for the next 16 days is one big gap in quality surf. It’s one of those blank runs where the forecast just isn’t offering anything to get excited about. If you don’t like it, wait a week – the charts can always change. For now, if you absolutely must get wet, your best bet is to look at the smallest, cleanest windows like Monday the 24th morning or Tuesday the 25th morning, but don’t expect a wave to ride.
Rusty.
