The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, talking in feet and degrees.
It’s been a rough run at Coastguard Beach. The whole 16-day window starts with a big gap of nothing good. The first few days are tiny, messy, and not worth getting wet for. You’re looking at a solid week of junk before any real wave shows up.
The one spot worth circling on the calendar is the morning of Thursday, 23 July. That’s the standout. We’ve got a 4ft SE swell, with an 11-second period, and the wind is clean offshore from the W. That’s gonna make for some clean, fun lines. The combined energy is 235 (moderate), so there’s enough juice to get a few turns in. For a beginner spot, this is a good size, and the offshore wind will keep things smooth. Water temp is about 67°, which is normal for this time of year.
After that, it’s back to small stuff. The Friday morning, 24 July, is glassy but very weak – 2ft, 8-second period, energy of only 66. It’s rideable on a log, but barely. Then from Saturday 25 July onward, it’s a long stretch of tiny, underpowered surf, mostly under 2ft with short periods. The wind is often clean or cross-off, but there’s just no swell to work with.
The final week has a few glassy moments, like the morning of Friday, 31 July, but with 1ft and 6-second period, it’s barely a ripple. Energy is 19. It’s more of a float than a surf.
Bottom line: the only real surf day is Thursday morning, 23 July. That’s your best bet. The rest is a long, flat spell with a few clean but tiny waves. If you’re keen, Friday 24 July morning is glassy, but it’s weak. After that, you’re waiting again.
Rusty.
