Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Hey folks, Rusty here. Gotta keep it real – this forecast is a tough one. There’s just no decent surf to get excited about right now, and we’re in for a long, quiet stretch.
Right now, it's flat and clean but tiny. We’re looking at little dribbles of 0.7ft to 1.0ft swell at Coastguard Beach for days on end, with barely any energy in the water (the combined energy reading is hanging around 5 to 14 for most of this first week). The wind is shifting around, sometimes cross-off, sometimes cross-on, so while the surface might look okay, there’s absolutely no push. A clean 1.0ft wave with a combined energy of only 9 and a short 6-second period means you’re just sitting there, not surfing.
Come Tuesday, July 7th, we get a slight bump. The swell picks up to around 4ft to 4ft from the SE, but the period is still a super short 6 seconds. The combined energy jumps into the low hundreds (106 to 163), which is moderate, but the wind turns cross-onshore and choppy. It’s a messy, blown-out mess. Not worth the hassle.
Sunday, July 12th is a bit of a tease. The morning brings glassy conditions with a 1.0ft SSE swell, clean but still way too small. Then on Sunday afternoon, we see the biggest energy spike of the whole 16-day stretch – a combined energy of 230, with a 3ft SSE swell and a 9-second period. That’s a real jolt of power. But the wind swings to a moderate cross-shore, making it lumpy. For a beach break like Coastguard, this one might actually be more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle guys.
After that, it’s back to tiny, clean waves with low energy and poor conditions right through to Saturday, July 18th when we get another 3ft SW groundswell attempt, but with a very short 4-second period and a moderate cross-off breeze. The energy is only 46 – weak.
So, the best bet, and I’m being honest here, is that Sunday afternoon, July 12th window. It’s the biggest energy we’ll see, and a 9-second period isn't the worst, but that cross-shore wind will chop it up. If you’re really itching for a paddle, that’s your only real shot, and it’s still a long way off – nearly two weeks. For everything else, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can turn, but right now, it’s a dry spell.
Rusty.
