The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let's get straight into it. If you're looking for waves at Coastguard Beach over the next 16 days, I’ve got to be honest with you – it’s looking pretty grim. The entire forecast period is a write-off for any decent surf. There's no standout sessions, no sneaky swell windows, and nothing that’s going to get you paddling out with a smile. The first few days are a total bust, and the pattern doesn't really improve. We’ve got a solid 16-day stretch of flat to tiny, messy conditions.
The first break we’re looking at is Coastguard Beach. It's a beginner-friendly spot, consistent, but it's exposed to swell from the SE, which isn't ideal given what's coming. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.
Right from the start, Thursday the 20th of August, it’s tiny. Morning brings a 1ft ESE swell with a short period of 7 seconds, and a weak combined energy of only 21. The wind is a light cross-off from the SSW, which is clean, but there’s just no power. By the afternoon, it drops to 1.0ft. The weekend doesn't get any better. Friday the 21st is a write-off with 1.0ft and onshore winds. Saturday the 22nd has a 2ft E swell, but it’s blown out with a 22 mph onshore wind in the afternoon, and the period is a pathetic 4 seconds. Sunday the 23rd is a similar story, with rain and weak onshore slop around 2ft.
The middle of the week offers a slight tease. Monday the 24th of August has a 4ft S swell in the afternoon, with a light offshore wind from the WSW, making it clean. But the period is a short 5 seconds, the combined energy is only 75, and the wave comment is still ‘poor surf conditions’. Tuesday the 25th is back to nothing. Wednesday the 26th is flat. Thursday the 27th is tiny and onshore. The next weekend, the 28th of August, the biggest swell on the chart shows up – a 4ft SE swell on Friday morning, but it’s a cross-onshore mess with a 5-second period. The energy is still weak at 82.
The last week of August and into September is more of the same. The 31st of August has a 4ft SSW swell with a moderate cross-off breeze, but again, a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy finally hits 103, which is moderate, but the shape will be sloppy. After that, September kicks off with strong winds and tiny, chopped-out surf. The final days show a small 2ft ESE swell on the 4th of September, but it’s onshore and weak.
For a beginner spot, nothing here is even worth a paddle. The 4ft swells are small enough for learners, but the wind and short period kill any chance of a fun wave. For more experienced surfers, there’s simply nothing to ride. If you’re into kiting, the stronger onshore wind days might offer something, but for a paddle surfer, this is a total blank run. It’s a tough stretch, but it won’t stay poor forever. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
