The Lowdown
Alright, mate, let’s cut through the noise. The next 16 days at Coastguard Beach are mostly a flat, frustrating stretch. The water temperature is about 71°F, which is a touch warmer than usual, but that’s about the only good news.
The first week or so, from Tuesday the 18th onward, is a total bust. Swell is tiny, barely 1 to 2 feet, and the energy is weak, with readings mostly between 12 and 60 (weak energy). The periods are short, 4 to 8 seconds – just bumpy, wind-driven slop. There’s a solid 10-day gap where you won’t find a single decent wave. The winds are all over the place, but it doesn’t matter because there’s nothing to ride.
It starts to show a little life around Sunday the 30th. The swell picks up to 4 feet from the NNE, with energy hitting 97 (weak-to-moderate). The wind is cross at 15 km/h (9 mph), so it’s not clean, but it’s a step up.
Your best shot, and the only real standout, is the morning of Monday the 31st of August. The swell is 4 feet from the NE, with a 6-second period. The energy is 156 (moderate). The wind is light, only 5 km/h (3 mph) from the north, making for a light cross-shore. That’s the cleanest the surf will be all period. The crowd is "sometimes" a factor, so you might get a few waves to yourself. It’s small, but it’s rideable.
Then, on Tuesday the 1st of September, the energy jumps massively to 512 (strong wave energy) with a 4-foot NE swell and a long 14-second period. That’s real groundswell potential. But the wind is a cross-onshore at 25 km/h (15 mph), which will ruin it. For a beach break, that long period will likely make the waves close out straight. This is a promising but uncertain long-range call. It’s an expert-only zone if it gets bigger, but the wind is a mess.
So, the only real recommendation is the morning of the 31st of August. It’s small but clean. Everything else is either flat or blown out. If you’re a kite surfer, the 1st of September might be worth a look, but for paddle surfing, it’s a tough stretch.
