The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. We've got one spot on the map, Coastguard Beach, and it’s shaping up to be a long, quiet stretch.
The whole 16-day forecast is a bit of a write-off. There's a gap right from the start with no real surf to get excited about, and it just keeps on going. We're looking at a solid week and a half of nothing doing.
For the first week, from Wednesday the 19th of August right through to Monday the 31st of August, the swell is tiny. We're talking ankle-biters, mostly 0.3ft to 3ft, with no real energy behind any of it. The numbers back that up – the combined swell energy is weak, barely cracking 50 at any point. It's a beggars-can't-be-choosers situation, and the conditions are mostly messy with cross-shore and onshore winds. The water temp at Coastguard Beach is about average for this time of year, but you won't be in it long enough to notice. Honestly, it’s more of a kite-surfing breeze than a surfing swell on most of those days with those onshore winds, especially around the 27th and 28th.
There are a couple of moments that might make you think twice. On the morning of Sunday the 23rd, we get a glimpse of a longer period groundswell (12 seconds) from the ESE, but it's only 0.9ft high with weak energy (62). That’s a lot of wait for barely a ripple. Then on Monday the 24th afternoon, the wind goes glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 0.6ft from the east. The tap is just barely dripping.
Moving into the second week, it doesn't get better. From the 1st of September, the swell height stays below 0.9ft and the wind picks up strongly, hitting 24 mph from the north-northeast on the 31st of August. Even when the wind turns clean cross-off on the 1st and 2nd of September, there’s simply no swell to work with. The long-period energy from the east (14-17 seconds) is there, but it’s so weak it’s almost a taunt. This is the kind of blank run that hits hard.
So, there's no standout day, no hidden gem, and certainly no reason to rush out the door. The best I can say is keep the board waxed and wait for a shift in the pattern. For the near future, it's a total flat spell.
Rusty.
