G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Woolgoolga over the next couple weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so we’ll go session by session.
We start Friday 3 July with tiny 3ft swell from the ENE and a short 7-second period. The combined energy is weak at just 95, so it’s pretty limp. Winds are cross-off but nothing special. It’s surfable, but you wouldn’t rush for it. Afternoon stays similar with a slight breeze, still small and ordinary.
Saturday 4 July morning sees a bump to 4ft from the south with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps into the moderate range at 369, and conditions are clean with a gentle cross-off breeze. That’s the first real sign of life. The afternoon drops right off to 2ft and goes cross-shore – poor, skip it.
Sunday 5 July morning has 3ft of south swell at 9 seconds, combined energy at 225, but a moderate cross-off breeze keeps it clean. It’s marginal, not bad but not great. The afternoon gets nasty: 6ft from the SSE, but a fresh 22 mph cross-off wind makes it messy and unappealing – score a zero for quality.
Now, Monday 6 July and Tuesday 7 July are the big ones. Monday morning sees 10ft of SSE groundswell with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1253 – that’s strong. The wind is cross-off and clean, but mate, 10ft at Woolgoolga? That’s too big for this break, experts only if they’re game. The afternoon stays big at 8ft. Tuesday brings more of the same: 10ft in the morning with a longer 11-second period and energy soaring to 3321. That’s very strong. Afternoon holds 10ft from the SE at 12 seconds – same story, too much power for here. These days are for the brave or the kite crew, not the average surfer.
Wednesday 8 July eases to 8ft from the SSE, period 11 seconds, energy still high at 3222. Still too big for most. Thursday 9 July morning is a standout: 7ft from the SE at 10 seconds, combined energy 799 (moderate), and a light cross-off breeze. The water temperature is about average for this time of year – no big anomaly. This is the pick of the first week – clean, solid, and at a size that’s more manageable for advanced surfers. Crowds are likely here on the better days, so get in early.
Friday 10 July morning is glassy with 5ft from the SE at 10 seconds and energy at 399 – that’s clean and fun, another good one. The afternoon goes cross-on and poor.
Saturday 11 July morning is dead calm with 3ft from the SSE, 9-second period, and glassy conditions. Energy is 248 – a small clean morning for a beginner-friendly wave. Afternoon turns onshore and flat.
From Sunday 12 July through to Wednesday 15 July, we hit a quiet stretch. Swells drop under 3ft most days, with combined energy below 100 or just above. Winds are mostly clean or offshore, but there’s no push. A few sessions are surfable but very ordinary – think ankle-biters. This gap lasts about three days of nothing worth calling.
Thursday 16 July morning sees a return of size: 8ft from the south at 10 seconds, combined energy 2045. That’s strong again, and with a fresh 19 mph cross-off wind, it’s clean but big. Friday 17 July morning drops to 6ft from the SSE at 11 seconds, energy 873, with moderate cross-off wind – better size, still clean. The afternoon bumps back to 8ft. Saturday 18 July morning holds 8ft from the SE at 11 seconds, energy 1806. These last few days are for experienced surfers only, as the swell is consistently over 8ft.
If you’re picking the best, Thursday 9 July morning is the standout: 7ft SE swell, light cross-off breeze, clean, and the swell direction aligns well with the optimum for this break. The crowd will be there, but the quality is worth it. The glassy Friday 10 July morning is a close second for a cleaner, slightly smaller session.
No absolute duds, but that mid-week gap around the 12th to 14th is a lull. Keep an eye on the long-range – the 16th to 18th look promising if you’ve got the skill for it.
Rusty.
