Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty, and we’re lookin’ at the surf at Woolgoolga over the next couple of weeks. Right now it’s pretty quiet, but there’s some size building – the problem is, a lot of it is gonna be too big and wonky for a paddle. We’ve got a solid run of groundswell, but you gotta pick your moments, and the standout windows are for the experienced crew only.
The water temp is sittin’ around 68°F, which is pretty average for this time of year – no surprises there.
The first surf worth mentionin’ is Sunday the 5th of July, but it’s a meagre 4ft from the SSE at 12 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 626, and with a 16 mph S cross-off wind, it’s clean but only just. Honestly, it’s a bit marginal – you’d be scratchin’ for a wave.
Then from Monday the 6th through to Wednesday the 8th, we get a big pulse. Swells jump to 10ft to 12ft from the SSE and SE, with periods up to 11 seconds. The energy is strong to very strong (1350 to 4389). But here’s the catch – it’s too big for this break; that’s expert-only territory at best, and with those 16 to 22 mph S winds, it’s gonna be a wild, chunky mess. Not for the faint-hearted. Thursday the 9th drops a little to 8ft to 8ft, but the winds are still fresh, and the conditions are marginal.
Now, Friday the 10th and Saturday morning the 11th – this is where it gets good for the average surfer. The swell drops to 6ft from the SE on Friday with a 6 mph SSW cross-off wind – clean, light, and the combined energy is still moderate at 721. Saturday morning the 11th is the real gem: glassy conditions with a NW wind at 3 mph, and a 5ft SE swell at 10 seconds. That’s clean, crisp, and the energy is moderate (404). This is the standout for the first week – smooth, shapely, and fun. Watch the crowd factor though – Woolgoolga can get busy sometimes, so get out early.
Sunday the 12th is okay with 4ft from the ESE and a cross-off wind, but it’s nothin’ special. From Monday the 13th through to Wednesday the 15th, the surf goes flat – tiny 1.0ft to 3ft swells, poor conditions, and weak energy. A proper lull of a few days.
Then we get another surge. Thursday the 16th brings 7ft from the SSE, but the winds are fresh and it’s still marginal. The real highlight for the second week is Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th. Friday morning: 8ft from the S at 10 seconds with a 3 mph NW cross-off wind – clean, strong energy at 1917, and conditions for experienced surfers only. Saturday morning the 18th is the absolute standout of the whole forecast: 8ft from the SE with a 13-second period, cross-off NW wind at 6 mph, and massive energy at 2532. That’s a proper groundswell, long period, and it’ll be clean as a whistle at Woolgoolga’s reef. But remember – this is a wave for the experts. Over 8ft and that long period means it’s gonna be powerful and hollow. Beginners stay well clear. Crowds are always a possibility here, especially on a Saturday. Sunday the 19th winds down to 6ft, and Monday the 20th has a 7ft S swell with a 9 mph NW cross-off wind – another solid session for the experienced.
So, bottom line: Saturday morning the 11th is your pick for a fun, all-level clean wave. For the big-wave hunters, Saturday morning the 18th is the one – but it’s for experts only. Keep your eyes open for those crowds.
Rusty.
