The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Woolgoolga. It’s a mixed bag ahead, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get the blood pumping.

We’ve got a solid pulse of swell on the way, but the first few days come with a big caveat. The water temp is sitting at 20°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.

The first real action kicks off on Saturday, 18th July, but it’s a tough one. The swell is a chunky 8 ft from the ESE, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 1184. The problem is the wind is howling from the south at 35 km/h, whipping up a cross-off breeze. It’s not great, and the surf is marginal. Not one to get too excited about.

Sunday, 19th July, is a write-off for most. Swell jumps to 12 ft from the ESE, period 10 seconds, and energy is strong at 2814. But that’s way too big for this spot, and the wind is still a fresh 35 km/h cross-shore from the SSE. The morning might have a window, but the size is a hard pass for all but the most experienced, and the afternoon looks poor. Same story rolls into Monday, 20th July – solid 10 ft swell with energy hitting 3360, but again, it’s just too big and the wind is cross. Not our day.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday, 21st July, is the standout. The morning brings a cleaner 6 ft swell from the east, period 10 seconds, with a light 10 km/h cross-off breeze from the south. The combined energy is a solid 583, and the conditions are described as very good. This is your window. A touch of crowd is possible, but for a Tuesday morning, it’ll be worth the paddle. The water is clean, and the waves should have some shape.

Wednesday, 22nd July, drops right off. Swell backs down to 4 ft, and the wind swings around, making it messy. From there, we hit a real dry spell. Thursday, 23rd July, is tiny – 3 ft with low energy. Friday, 24th July, sees a bit of a spike up to 6 ft from the SSE and a 9-second period, with a clean cross-off wind, but the energy is only moderate and the forecast is marginal. Saturday, 25th July, offers a glimmer: 5 ft from the south with a 9-second period, cross-off wind, and very good conditions forecast. The energy is 689. That’s a nice little session for the afternoon.

Then it’s back to small and weak. From Sunday, 26th July, through to the end of the period, the swell is mostly under 3 ft, with periods dropping and energy falling into the weak range. The wind is light and clean on some mornings, but there just isn’t enough push to get excited about. The last real mention is on Saturday, 1st August, where a 3 ft glassy swell from the SE shows up, but it’s short period and low energy.

The pick of the bunch: Tuesday, 21st July, morning. That’s the one. Clean cross-off wind, a solid 6 ft east swell, and the water is clean. Get out there if you can.

For the rest of it, you’re waiting for a decent pulse. The long run into the first week of August shows a few tiny bumps, but nothing to write home about. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, that Tuesday morning is where the stoke is.

Rusty.
