The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks here. It’s been a bit of a slow start, but there’s a pulse coming through, and the later part of the run is looking like the real deal for those who can wait.

We’ve got a pretty quiet opening to the forecast window. The first proper push of swell doesn’t really show up until the afternoon of Wednesday, July 15th, and even then, it’s a messy one. Before that, the waves are tiny, around 0.3ft to 0.7ft from the ESE, with a weak 7-second period that’s just not doing anything. The wind is light, but the energy is pathetic, so you’re better off waxing the longboard and waiting.

That Wednesday afternoon, a 7ft SSE swell shows up, but it’s a short period windswell at 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (496), but the wind is howling at 22 mph from the south, making it a cross-off breeze. The break is Woolgoolga, a beach and reef setup that’s advanced only. For a beginner, this is far too big and punchy, and with that wind, it’s a grunt session. Thursday and Friday keep the size around 5ft to 8ft, but the wind stays fresh and cross-shore, meaning the surface is lumpy. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.

The real standout window starts to fire up on the morning of Tuesday, July 22nd. The swell is a solid 6ft from the east, with a 10-second period that’s got some proper groundswell in it. The combined energy pushes into high moderate territory (546), and the wind is light and cross-off out of the SSW. That’s clean, workable surf. The break is Woolgoolga, and it’s a fairly consistent spot, though it can get crowded sometimes. That swell is a good size for advanced surfers, not too big, not too small, and the direction (ESE) is right in the sweet spot for this break. Wednesday the 22nd is even better, with 7ft of east swell and the same light breeze, making it a top pick.

Don’t sleep on Thursday morning, July 23rd either. The wind is light and cross-off from the NW, and the swell is still 6ft at 10 seconds, with a combined energy of 617. That’s the best combination of size and clean conditions in the whole run. Late in the second week, on Saturday, July 25th, the morning looks good again with a 5ft east swell, light NW wind, and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (496), and it’s a solid, fun option.

The last few days of the month, from Sunday the 26th through Tuesday the 28th, see a slight drop in size to 4ft-4ft, but the wind goes glassy at times, especially on the Monday morning (July 27th) with a dead calm. That’s a beautiful, clean morning for a longboard or a fish, but the period drops to 8-9 seconds, so it’s not as powerful.

Overall, the best bet is the morning of Thursday, July 23rd. You’ve got a 6ft east swell, 10-second period, light cross-off wind, and a combined energy of 617. That’s clean, punchy, and well-shaped for the reef. The Tuesday morning (July 22nd) is almost as good. If you’re an expert, the Sunday, July 19th, has a huge 10ft ESE swell, but the wind is fresh and cross, making it lumpy and dangerous. That’s only for the brave.
