The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – this 16-day window for Woolgoolga is a bit of a mixed bag, and there’s not much that’s really firing for the average punter. The first few days are a write-off, but there’s a couple of windows that could be worth a look if you’re keen.
The opening week is rough. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are a mess – we’ve got a solid 8ft to 8ft swell from the SE, but those winds are a killer. Friday’s a cross-shore 19 mph breeze, lumpy as, and the water’s sitting at 68°, which is about average for this time of year. Saturday’s not much better, with a 22-25 mph cross-offshore wind that’s making the 8ft swell (swell energy 786) look clean but it’s still marginal tide-wise. Sunday the 19th is a big no-go – the swell jumps to 12ft (ESE, 10 seconds) and the energy is through the roof (2658), but it’s too big for this spot and the wind is a lumpy cross-shore. Monday the 20th is still average, with 8ft dropping to 7ft, moderate cross-shore chop, and not much to get excited about.
Now, the standout: Tuesday the 21st is your best bet. The swell drops to a clean 6ft (E, 10 seconds) in the morning, and the wind is glassy – 3 mph from the SE. It’s a fair bit of energy for that size (612), but the conditions are clean. This is a break for the advanced crew, as it’s a beach and reef setup, so you’ll need to know the rocks. The swell direction is ESE, which is close to the optimum ESE, so it’ll line up well. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but it’s not packed. The morning window is the one to go for.
After that, we drop off. Wednesday the 22nd has a 4ft (E, 9 seconds) with a light cross-offshore wind, but it’s small and weak (258 energy). Thursday the 23rd is tiny at 3ft, and the rest of the week is a slow fade. The second week sees a bit of a pulse from the SSE on the 24th (6ft, 7 seconds) but it’s short-period junk, and the wind is messy. The 26th has a 3ft swell with a 14-second period – that’s a long-period groundswell, but it’s so small (233 energy) you’ll be scratching for a ride. By the 27th, we’re down to 2ft. The 1st of August sees a tiny 1ft to 3ft kick from the SSE with a very long 19-second period, but it’s on the small side (427 energy) and only a morning option with offshore wind.
Bottom line: Tuesday the 21st morning is the only real standout – glassy, clean, and a decent 6ft E swell. The rest is either too big with wind, too small, or too ordinary. If you’re not about that early session, you’re looking at a long gap of flat or marginal days.
Rusty.
