The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve been staring at the charts for Woolgoolga, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing for the first few days, and then a big pulse of energy rolls in, but it’s going to be a tricky one to handle. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real sniff of anything happens on the 15th, but it’s a tease. Wednesday morning is tiny as – like, 0.3ft of south swell with a super long 16-second period. The combined energy is a measly 9, so it’s barely a ripple. It’s clean thanks to a cross-off breeze, but you’d be scratching for a wave. Wednesday afternoon gets a bit more grunt, with a 7ft SSE swell, but the period drops right off to 7 seconds, and the wind is howling at 22 mph. The energy jumps to 514 (moderate), but the conditions are marginal at best.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are washouts. Solid 8ft to 6ft swells, but the wind is a messy cross-shore, and the period is short. The energy is there (768 on Thursday morning), but the surf is just poor and lumpy.
Now, Saturday the 18th afternoon gets interesting. The swell is 8ft from the east with a 9-second period, and the energy is pumped up to 1667 (strong). The wind is a cross-off, making it clean. But here’s the thing – this is a spot for advanced surfers, and at 8ft, it’s pushing into expert territory. It’s a bit of a standout for the sheer size, but you need to know what you’re doing.
Sunday the 19th is where it gets big. The swell hits 12ft from the ESE with a 10-second period, and the energy is a massive 2732. The wind is cross, so it’s lumpy. The afternoon session actually gets a good score, but the note says it’s too big for this break. Honestly, at 12ft, even for the advanced crew, this is getting hairy. The same goes for Monday the 20th – 10ft of swell, still big, still cross-shore wind.
The light at the end of the tunnel is Tuesday the 21st. The morning looks magic. The swell drops to a nice 6ft from the east, a 10-second period, and the wind is a light 6 mph cross-off. The energy is 794 (moderate), and the report says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the one to aim for. The swell direction (E) is a bit off the optimum for Woolgoolga (ESE), but the clean conditions will make it a ripper.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd have some glassy mornings with smaller 5ft and 4ft swells, but the energy is dropping. It’s not a standout, but it’s a fun option if you just want a longboard session.
For the second week, things get spotty. Friday the 24th has a clean 5ft swell in the afternoon, but it’s marginal. The weekend of the 25th and 26th sees a bump in size back to 7ft, but the wind is messy again. The 26th morning is clean with a 4ft east swell, but it’s not going to blow your mind. The rest of the week into the 30th is mostly small, messy, or onshore. The best bet is definitely Tuesday the 21st morning.
So, wrap it up: the first few days are a write-off, then we get a massive, lumpy swell that’s only for the experts, and then a clean, fun window on Tuesday the 21st. That’s your best chance. If you’re out there on the big days, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
Rusty.
