The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into what Woolgoolga is doing.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are pretty bloody quiet. There’s a tiny window early on, but don’t go planning your week around it. Water temp is 67°F, right around average for the time of year.
The one session that stands out is Monday morning, August 17th. You’ve got a 5ft swell coming from the SE, period of 7 seconds. Wind is cross-off from the S at 9 mph, and it’s clean. Wave energy is moderate at 533. This is your best bet – get out there before the rain and chop move in.
Monday afternoon turns ugly – cross-on wind, rain, and the surf gets sloppy. Tuesday the 18th is marginal, with a 5ft ESE swell but cross winds making it bumpy. Wednesday the 19th morning is clean with a 4ft swell and a cross-off from the S, which is okay, but it’s nothing to write home about.
From Thursday the 20th onward, it’s mostly poor. Swell drops under 3ft, wind goes onshore or cross-on, and wave energy is weak, often under 200. The stretch from Friday the 21st all the way to the end of the month is just flat and choppy. There’s a glassy moment on Saturday the 22nd morning and Sunday the 23rd afternoon, but the swell is only 2ft – barely a ripple.
The second week has a few clean mornings, like Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th with cross-off wind, but again, the swell is only 2-2ft. Weak energy. No real power.
By the end of August and into September, the swell tries to climb a bit to 3-4ft, but the wind is onshore from the ENE, with rain. Conditions are poor for a paddle. With small swell and messy wind, this beach-and-reef setup is more interesting for kite surfing.
Your one real chance is Monday morning the 17th. After that, it’s a long stretch of nothing.
