The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this outlook for Woolgoolga is a bit of a flat patch. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty average, with only a few sessions that might be worth a paddle if you’re desperate. We’ve got a long gap of poor surf from the start all the way through to the end of the first week, so don’t get your hopes up.
Alright, let’s get into it. It’s Monday morning, the 24th of August, and we’ve got a tiny 2ft SSE swell rolling in at 11 seconds. The water’s sitting at 67°, which is about average for this time of year. The wind is glassy out of the east at 3 mph, so it’s dead clean, but the wave energy is weak (125). It’s surfable, but barely. That’s as good as it gets for a while, because the afternoon turns to junk with a 16 mph cross-onshore and the swell stays small.
The rest of the week is a write-off. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday – all poor surf conditions with messy winds and tiny, short-period swell. Friday morning the 28th shows a bit of hope with a 3ft SSE swell (8 seconds) and light cross-onshore, but it’s marginal at best. The energy is moderate (208), but the wind isn’t clean enough to make it fun. That theme carries through the weekend: small, cross-shore winds, and nothing that’ll get your heart racing.
We hit Monday the 31st of August with another glassy morning – 2ft from the east, period 9 seconds, and glassy conditions. The energy is still weak (121). It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it. After that, the first week of September is a long stretch of nothing. Small swell, cross-on winds, and most days the energy is weak or barely moderate. The flag on the 4th of September Friday morning is a bit cleaner with a 2ft ENE swell and a 10-second period, but the energy is only 85 – weak.
For the best on offer, I’d point you to Monday morning the 24th of August. It’s the cleanest window we’ve got: glassy conditions, 2ft SSE swell, 11-second period. It’s small, but it’s the only time the wind plays nice. The other standout is Wednesday morning the 26th of August – 3ft ENE swell, 7-second period, with a light offshore wind. The energy is 112, so it’s surfable, but the period is short, so the waves will be a bit weak and crumbly. Not worth getting too excited about.
Honestly, for Woolgoolga, this is a quiet stretch. The surf is small, the winds are mostly bad, and there’s no real punch in the swell. If you’re a beginner, the small stuff is fine, but there’s nothing over 5ft for the advanced crew. The moderate energy days (like the 28th and 29th) are still ruined by dodgy wind. You’ll be scratching for waves, not scoring them.
Stay patient. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
