The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, lookin’ at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. It’s been a bit of a wild ride, but there’s definitely some gems to get excited about.

First up, we’ve got a serious pulse of energy hitting Woolgoolga. This is a beach and reef set-up that’s advanced territory, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first real standout is Sunday morning, July 19th. We’re looking at a solid 10ft swell from the ESE, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a lot of water moving – the combined energy is a massive 2294 (moderate wave energy). The wind is cross-off from the south at 22 mph, which is a bit breezy, but it’s keeping the waves clean. This is a big one, but it’s only for experienced surfers. That afternoon, it jumps up to 12ft from the same direction, with energy hitting 4738 (strong to very strong wave energy). It’s still clean, but it’s a serious step up.

Now, Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are a bit of a write-off. The wind swings around, the swell drops, and it’s a messy cross-shore situation. The energy is down to 1568 and then 583, but it’s not clean. Hang tight.

The real magic starts to show itself on Friday morning, July 24th. The swell is 7ft from the south, period of 10 seconds, and the wind is a light offshore from the south at 6 mph. The waves are clean, and the energy is 1058 (moderate wave energy). This is excellent for experienced surfers who know what they’re doing. The optimum swell direction is ESE, but the south direction is still working well here.

We get a few days of smaller, glassy conditions on the weekend and into the start of the next week. July 26th Sunday morning has a 3ft SSE swell with a 12-second period and glassy conditions – combined energy of 250 (weak wave energy). It’s clean, but small.

The best of the entire run, without a doubt, is Tuesday morning, July 28th. The swell is 7ft from the south, period of 11 seconds, with a light cross-off wind from the SSW at 6 mph. The energy is 1536 (moderate wave energy), and conditions are clean. This is the one to circle on the calendar for experienced surfers.

We get another solid pulse on Wednesday morning, July 29th, with a 7ft SSE swell and a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and the energy is 2214 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NNW, so it’s not perfect, but the power is there. This long period swell will be lining up nicely at this reef and point set-up, but it might be a bit too straight for the beach sections.

Looking further ahead into the first week of August, there’s a promising morning on Monday, August 3rd. The swell is 5ft from the SSE with a long 14-second period, and it’s glassy. The energy is 883 (moderate wave energy). It’s a good-looking morning, but it’s a long way out, so don’t hold your breath just yet.

For the standouts, it’s the Friday morning, July 24th and Tuesday morning, July 28th that are the top picks. Both have solid swell, clean winds, and are in that sweet spot for experienced surfers. The 28th has the edge for consistency and the quality of the swell.

There’s a few days of small surf in between, but nothing stays flat for long around here. The forecast can change, so keep your eyes peeled.

Rusty.
