The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the forecast for the next couple of weeks. I'll be straight with you – it's a bit of a slow burner out there, but there are a couple of serious pulses on the horizon that have got my attention.
The start of this stretch is pretty grim for us. The wind is just constantly chopping things up from the west and northwest, and the swell is small and weak. That combo makes for some messy, bumpy conditions at Watergate Bay. It's the kind of surf you paddle out for and then wonder why you bothered. The water is 66°, which is a touch warmer than usual for the time of year, but that’s about all we have going for us. This poor run stretches from now through the weekend, with hardly a wave worth the paddle. It's looking like a write-off until we get to the middle of next week.
There's a minor blip on the 25th, Tuesday morning, where the wind drops out completely to glassy. But the swell is only 2ft and from the north, so it’s not exactly going to be grinding. A fun one for a log maybe, if you're really keen, but the energy is weak.
Then we get a little more life in the water at the back end of the week. On the 28th, things get more interesting. The swell jumps up to around 7ft from the west, with a 10-second period and some good energy in the water. It's still a bit cross-shore, but this is the first real swell of the window. The size is getting up there, so it might be too much for the beginners, but for the rest of us, this could be worth a look. The following morning, the 29th, has a similar size, but the wind swings onshore again and it gets lumpy.
But hold on, because the real standout is at the very end of the run. We're looking at the 31st of August, Monday. The swell starts building from the west, and by the afternoon, it's a proper solid 10ft of west swell with a long 13-second period. This is a big, powerful groundswell that will have Watergate Bay absolutely working. It’s going to be a proper expert-only show with that size, and because it's a beach break, that long-period swell might be a bit sectiony. But for the chargers, this is the one to circle on the calendar.
Right after that, on the 1st of September, things go off the rails again, with a near-gale blowing from the south-west. That'll chop it right up and make it terrible, so don't sleep on that Monday session.
So there you have it. A whole lot of nothing to start, a taste of action on the 28th, but the big one is the 31st of August. That's the standout of the whole two weeks, no question.
Rusty, signing off.
