The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the same outlook, but in feet and miles per hour for those who think that way.
We’re looking at a long, quiet stretch at Tolcarne. From now through the end of July and into early August, it’s basically a surf desert. The swell is tiny, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore almost every day, and the wave energy is weak. Not much to get the heart rate up.
The first real sign of life is on Saturday, July 25th. Swell bumps up to about 6ft from the WNW, with moderate energy (213). The period is short though – only 6-7 seconds – so it’s a lumpy windswell. The problem is the wind is onshore from the NNW all day, which will ruin any chance of clean waves. The water temp is about normal for this time of year.
Sunday, July 26th is similar: 5ft to 4ft from the WNW with a bit more period (7 seconds) and moderate energy (218 to 150), but the wind is still onshore. For a beginner-friendly spot like Tolcarne, a 5ft swell with onshore wind is just messy and not fun for anyone.
After that, it fades fast. By the end of the month and into August, we’re back to tiny, weak swells. There’s a small moment on Wednesday, July 29th with a longer period (9-10 seconds) and moderate energy (118), but the swell is only 2ft to 2ft, and the wind is still cross-onshore. Not worth the drive.
The best bet, if you’re desperate, is Saturday, July 25th – the biggest swell (6ft), but it’s choppy and blown out. For a beginner spot, that’s too big and rough. The rest of the 16 days is a washout. Forecasts can change, so don’t give up entirely, but right now it’s a solid no-go.
Rusty.
