The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the Tolcarne forecast.
I’ll be honest with you, the next couple of weeks are a tough watch for Tolcarne. The first solid week really is a write-off for any decent surf. We’ve got a long, dry spell from now until the end of August where the conditions are just poor. The swell is tiny and the wind is all over the shop, mostly cross or onshore. There’s no real wave energy to speak of, with combined energy values barely cracking 100 (179). Most days are sitting in the low double digits or just over 100, that’s weak stuff. The water temperature is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least a wetsuit is comfortable.
We finally get a bit of life on the 27th of August. The Thursday morning session sees a 3ft swell from the west, with a light cross-offshore breeze, and a combined energy of 148. It’s surfable, but the conditions are still very ordinary. By the 1st of September, the Tuesday afternoon has a 5ft swell from the west-southwest with a 6-second period, but the wind is light and cross-off, making it clean. The combined energy here is 177.
Now, the real standout – and I mean the *only* standout – is on Wednesday, 2nd of September. Look, this is a big one. The forecast is showing a 10ft to 12ft swell from the west, with a solid 9 to 10-second period. The combined energy is monstrous at 1397 and 2309. The wind is clean, cross-off from the east-southeast, so the conditions will be glassy. But here’s the catch: this swell is too big for Tolcarne. It’s a beginner break, and over 8ft it’s only for experts. Unless you’re a local charger who knows the sandbanks, this is a day to watch from the cliff. It’s a rare and powerful groundswell, but it’s not a friendly wave for the average punter.
After that, the 3rd to the 5th of September sees a drop in size but a return to messy cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions. The swell is there, but the quality is poor. The combined energy is still high, but honestly, it’s a frustrating setup for Tolcarne.
To sum it up: the next 16 days are a lean period for Tolcarne. If you’re a beginner or intermediate, the 27th of August morning is your best bet for a small, clean wave. For the experts, the 2nd of September is a massive, powerful swell, but it’s a serious mission. Otherwise, it’s a pretty blank run. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
