The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – this outlook for the next couple of weeks is a tough one to write. We’ve got a real quiet patch ahead, so let’s talk about what’s on offer.
The forecast for Tolcarne is a pretty dry spell. We start with no surf to speak of right now, and that blank run stretches all the way through until the end of August. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’s a bit more comfortable for a paddle.
The first real glimmer of something rideable pops up on the afternoon of Wednesday the 26th of August. We’ve got a small 3ft swell from the west, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a weak 203. The wind is a light cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but the conditions are pretty ordinary. It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it.
The best of the bunch, and I mean the only real standout, looks like the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. The swell is still small at 3ft from the west, period of 10 seconds, and combined energy of 177. What makes this one special is the wind: it’s glassy. Dead flat, clean water. For a beginner-friendly break like Tolcarne, that’s as good as it gets for the size on offer. The waves will be small and weak, but it’ll be a beautiful morning for a longboard or a foamie.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. We get a bit of a bump in size on the 29th of August with a 7ft west swell, but the wind is a messy cross-on, so it’s choppy and not worth the hassle. That’s too big for beginners anyway, and the wind ruins it for the rest of us.
Looking further out, there’s a spike on the 3rd of September with a 7ft west swell, but the wind is a screaming 31 mph cross-off from the southwest. That’s a near gale, creating a massive clean-up set. It’s clean, but it’ll be wild and for experts only. And on the 4th of September, we see a 5ft swell from the north-northwest, but the wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be pretty.
So, bottom line: if you’re keen, the Thursday morning of the 27th of August is your best bet for a clean, glassy session on small waves. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for anything substantial.
Rusty.
