The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the outlook for Tolcarne.
Straight up, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet, with a long stretch of nothing much to write home about. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at about 64°, so that’s a nice little bonus if you’re just going for a dip.
The first real pulse of swell we see is on Saturday, July 25th, with a jump in wave height. Saturday morning shows a 6 ft swell from the west-northwest, but it’s a short period windswell at just 7 seconds. The onshore wind is blowing at 12 mph from the north-northwest, and the combined energy hits 366 – that’s a decent amount of juice. The problem is, with that short period and onshore wind, it’s going to be a messy, lumpy affair. This is more of a kite session than a paddle session at a beach break like this. That afternoon, it droops a bit to 5 ft, still with the same issues.
Saturday the 25th is the only real standout for size, but it’s not clean. If you’re a beginner, those 6 ft waves are too big for you, and the onshore wind will make it a battle. For the experts, it’s there, but it’s not pretty.
The rest of the 16-day window is a real desert. From now until the 25th, we’ve got a solid week of tiny, weak surf with poor wind conditions, mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The swell heights barely tickle 3 ft, and the period is short, with combined energy values mostly in the 30s, 60s, or 70s – that’s weak. There’s no real standout quality in there.
After the 25th, the swell drops back down into the 3 ft or less range, with periods still short and winds remaining onshore or cross-onshore. The surf is pretty much flat or poor through to the 2nd of August.
So, the honest truth is, if you’re looking to paddle out and have a clean, fun session, there’s nothing on the menu that’s a proper standout. The best bet is the 25th for the biggest swell, but you’ll have to fight the wind. Sometimes you just have to sit this one out, mate. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a long wait.
Rusty.
