Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G'day, Rusty here, and I've gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Tolcarne is a tough one to write. We are looking at a pretty grim stretch ahead with very little on offer for the next couple of weeks. The water temp is sitting at 61°F which is about average for this time of year, so the ocean doesn't feel weird, just flat.
We've got a long, quiet run starting now and it's not until Monday, July 21st that we see any real sign of life, and even then, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Before that, the surf is honestly poor or non-existent. Most days we're looking at tiny inconsistent waves under 3ft, often with lousy cross-onshore breezes making things choppy and messy. You'll get the odd day like Sunday, July 12th where the wind cleans up a bit in the afternoon with a light cross-offshore, but the swell is practically nothing at 0.3ft with a 21-second period, so that's no use for riding. The energy in the water is just weak with values often in the double digits (23 - 146), meaning it's barely worth paddling out.
Now, that brings us to the one and only real standout, and it's on Monday, July 21st. The morning session shows a jump in size with the swell coming in at a solid 7ft from the NW with a period of just 7 seconds. That's a short-period swell, so it'll be a bit lumpy and fat, not the cleanest lines. The combined energy is a strong 352, so there's plenty of push. However, the wind is a light cross-on from the north, so there'll be a few ripples on the surface. At that size, 7ft is getting into the big stuff – it's gonna be a handful for beginners, and the wind is not super clean. It's really only going to be for the experienced crew who don't mind a bit of chop.
The crowds at Tolcarne are often around, and on a day that finally has some proper swell like this, expect it to be busy with everyone trying to get a piece of that. So that's it. A long wait for a single day that might have some grunt, but it's not going to be a classic. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor forever.
Rusty.
