The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s looking flat and grim. The whole first week and a half is a write-off. We’re talking a solid 12 days of practically nothing worth paddling out for. The water temperature at Tolcarne is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only small mercy.
We’ve got a long stretch of onshore northerlies and weak, choppy conditions. The swell is tiny, with periods bouncing around 5 to 8 seconds, and combined energy barely cracking 100 (34 to 94). It’s just messy, small, and frustrating. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July where the wind goes glassy, and the swell is 3ft from the west, but the combined energy is only 120 – it’s just surfable, not good. The wind is offshore, but it's a tiny swell with a short period, so it’s not going to offer much.
Then things start to get a bit more interesting, but it’s all the way out on Wednesday the 29th of July. The swell starts to show some real energy, with combined energy hitting 192 on the morning (5ft from the west, 7 seconds) and even 229 on the afternoon (5ft, 8 seconds). That’s moderate wave energy starting to build, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the west, making it lumpy and choppy. It’s a tricky one, and for a beginner, 5ft is getting a bit much.
The best chance in the whole run looks like it lands on the morning of Monday the 27th of July. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the west-northwest, with a 6-second period, and the combined energy is 167 – that’s respectable. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the north at just 6 mph, which is about as good as it’s going to get. It’s not perfect, but it’s the cleanest wave we’ll see all week. After that, it’s back to the chop and the onshores.
So, the honest truth? There’s no standout session here. If you’re desperate, that Monday morning is your best bet, but don’t expect miracles. It’s a lean run.
Rusty.
