Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tolcarne over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I’ve got to be straight with you – it’s a pretty slow start. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing much to get excited about, especially through the first week and into the second week. There’s a real gap in quality surf here, with hardly a wave worth paddling out for from Friday the 10th to about Tuesday the 21st of July. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, or it’s just plain flat. A few days you’ll see a waist-high wave, but the conditions are generally poor, with cross-shore breezes and not much energy. The water temperature at Tolcarne is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’s not chilly if you’re just floating around.
Now, the one true standout, and it’s a long way off, but it’s worth circling on the calendar. On Wednesday the 22nd of July, things finally wake up. The morning sees a cleaner picture with a moderate east-southeast breeze, blowing cross-offshore, and the swell jumps up to 5ft to 6ft from the west. The combined energy climbs to around 340 (moderate wave energy), and the period is a workable 7 to 8 seconds. That’s not a classic groundswell, but it’s a solid push of swell that should offer some fun, punchy waves. The afternoon holds similar size and conditions. The wind stays offshore enough to keep things clean. Just be aware that with the swell at 6ft, it’s getting a bit big for beginners, but it’s not yet into expert-only territory. The break is fairly exposed and fairly consistent, so it should handle that west swell well. The optimum direction is west, which matches the swell direction – that’s a good sign. Crowds are often around here, so expect company.
The following couple of days, Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th, have some surfable waves, but the wind starts to mess with things. Thursday morning has a fresh offshore from the southeast (18 mph), which could clean it up, but it’s a strong breeze, and the swell drops to 4ft. The energy is still moderate (259). Friday morning has a gentler breeze and a 4ft west-northwest swell, but it’s a shorter period, so it won’t have the same punch as the 22nd.
Honestly, if you can wait, the 22nd of July is your best bet. Everything before that is a waiting game.
Rusty.
