The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s look at the same chart, but in feet and miles per hour.
The 16-day forecast for Tolcarne is a real mixed bag, and mostly a bummer. The first surfable day isn't until the 19th of August, so you’ve got a gap before that.
On Wednesday morning, the 19th, we’ve got a 4ft swell from the WNW, but it’s coming with a cross-on breeze at 16 mph. The energy is weak (258) and the wave comment is poor. Choppy and no good.
Thursday the 20th sees a bump in size – 7ft in the morning from the W, with a moderate energy jump (767). But the wind is still a fresh cross-on from the WNW at 19 mph, making it lumpy and messy. This is more for kite surfers than paddlers.
The pattern stays the same through the weekend. Friday the 21st drops back to 3ft, Saturday the 22nd to 4ft, and the wind is always cross-on. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, at 66°F.
We hit a flat spell from Sunday the 23rd into Monday the 24th. Swell drops to 0.7ft and 1.0ft. The wind turns light and cross-off on Monday, giving us clean conditions, but there’s no wave energy (27 and 21). It’s flat.
The next real pulse comes on Wednesday the 26th of August. The morning swell jumps to 7ft (W) with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate (487). But again, the cross-on wind from the WNW at 12 mph spoils it. It’s choppy.
Thursday the 28th of August afternoon is the only real standout. The swell is 5ft from the WSW, period is a short 7 seconds, and the wind finally swings offshore from the SSE at 16 mph. The wave comment is “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The wind is clean, the energy is moderate (218), and if you’re a beginner, 5ft is the top end. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
After that, it’s a long dry spell. The 31st of August sees a big 8ft swell from the W with very strong energy (1277), but the wind is a fresh cross-on at 22 mph. That’s expert-only and blown out.
The very last day, September 2nd, has a morning session with 7ft from the WNW, a cross-off wind from the SSW at 16 mph, and clean conditions. The wave comment is still just “marginal.”
So, the only real window is the afternoon of the 28th of August. It’s not a classic, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see. The rest is flat or onshore junk.
Rusty.
