The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you.
Honestly, this is a tough stretch for Venice North and South Jetty. I’m looking at the next 16 days, and to be blunt, there’s just no real surf on offer. The whole run is filled with poor surf conditions, and the combined wave energy barely gets past a whisper. We’re talking about a stretch of flat, tiny, or messy junk. The first recommendation for any kind of wave doesn’t even show up until the 14th of July, and even then it’s weak.
The water is sitting at a very warm 89°F for the start of the period, which is more than 5°F above the long-term average for this time of year. That’s very unusual, but it’s about the only notable thing happening.
Okay, let’s walk through it. Monday the 13th is a total write-off. Tuesday the 14th brings a tiny 1.0ft swell from the southeast in the morning, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. The combined energy is a pathetic 1. That’s barely a ripple. Wednesday the 15th morning has a clean 0.7ft cross-offshore wind, but again, it’s basically flat. The 20th of July sees the biggest swell of the whole period – a 2ft from the west with a combined energy of 42. For a beach/jetty setup, that’s still weak, and it’s cross-onshore and choppy. There’s a small window on the 20th morning with a 2ft wave and a slight onshore wind, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
The rest of the dates from the 22nd through to the 28th of July just spin their wheels. The swell stays tiny, often under 2ft, with periods under 6 seconds. The wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, keeping it messy. The combined energy never gets above 10. This is about as flat as it gets.
To be honest, with surf this small and weak, and the wind generally messy, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s just nothing for a surfer to work with here. The spot is inconsistent at the best of times, and this run is a classic blank period for the area. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
