The Lowdown

Alright, grab your board shorts, let’s see what we’ve got. It’s Rusty here, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for the Venice North and South Jetty. I’ll be honest with you, it’s not looking like a classic run. There are no real standouts in this whole 16-day window, so we’re in for a bit of a waiting game.

Right off the bat, there's no surf on offer for Monday afternoon. We’re starting with a flat spell that’s going to last a couple of days. The water temp is sitting at 87°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s something to keep in mind when you’re in the water.

The first bit of rideable swell tries to show up on Tuesday the 18th, but it’s weak and messy. We’re looking at a 1ft swell with a period of 3 seconds. The wind is cross-onshore from the WNW at 12 mph, which is going to chop things up. The combined energy is only at 2, which is weak. It’s not worth getting excited about. The afternoon might see it bump up slightly to 2ft, but the period is still short and the same wind is killing it.

Wednesday the 19th isn't much better. The morning has a 2ft swell from the W, but it's still disorganized with that same cross-onshore wind. The energy is a bit better at 11, but it's still not going to be clean. This trend continues through Thursday and Friday, with the swell dropping back to 0.6-1ft. The wind does ease up a bit on Thursday, but it's still cross-onshore, making things lumpy. The jetty is pretty inconsistent as it is, so these conditions are not working in our favor.

We hit another flat spell over the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd. There’s a tiny 0.6ft blip on the Saturday morning, but it’s gone by the afternoon. Sunday shows a similar story.

The new week kicks off with more of the same. Monday the 24th sees the swell at 1ft with a light breeze, but it’s still not doing anything. The wind turns cross-offshore on Tuesday morning from the ESE at just 3 mph, which makes things clean, but the swell is only 0.6ft with a period of 5 seconds. It’s just not enough power. The energy is a 2, so it’s barely a ripple.

Wednesday the 26th morning has a slight improvement. The swell is 2ft from the S with a 5-second period and that clean cross-offshore wind. Combined energy gets up to 15, which is the most we’ve seen all window, but it's still weak. It’s a chance for a knee-high wave on a longboard, but that's about it.

Thursday the 27th morning is glassy, with the wind going calm from the ENE. The swell is 1ft from the SSE, but the period is short at 4 seconds. The energy is only 8. It will look pretty, but there won't be much push behind it. The afternoon is back to a moderate cross-shore wind, so that clean window closes up.

The rest of the window backslides into poor surf conditions. The swell stays small and weak, and the winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore. On the 29th of August, we get a 1ft SE swell with onshore winds at 12 mph, which is just a mess. The final days of August and the start of September are looking flat again, with a few tiny, poor quality bumps that just won't do anything for us.

So, here's the deal. This is a blank run. We’ve got a couple of moments with clean wind, but the swell is simply not there. The jetty is an inconsistent spot, and this forecast is a prime example of that. It tends not to stay poor for long around here, and forecasts can change, so keep an eye out. For the next 16 days, if you're desperate, the longboard and a lot of patience are your best friends, but I wouldn't book the day off work.

This is Rusty, signing off.
