The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the outlook for Rabbit/Manana Island. Straight up, this is a tough stretch. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The next few weeks are a real mixed bag, and mostly not in a good one. We’ve got a long run of poor surf conditions starting right now. The first surfable day that’s even worth talking about is a long way off, so let’s walk through it.
The first real standout is on the 1st of September. The morning has a solid 12 ft swell coming from the ENE, with a period of 10 seconds. The wind is gentle and cross-onshore, but the real issue here is that this break is just going to be too big for most. The combined energy is massive at 2611, so that’s a powerful, heavy ocean. This is strictly for experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a handful. The wind is light, but the sheer size and the short period make it a messy, powerful beast.
The afternoon of the 1st is similar, with an 12 ft ENE swell, but the wind drops to a light breeze. The energy is still huge at 1967. Same story: too big for this break, but if you’re a seasoned charger and you’re looking for a massive, challenging day, this is the window.
After that, the swell drops back down, but the wind stays onshore and lumpy, with the surf conditions described as poor for the next several days. There’s a brief moment on the 2nd of September morning where the swell drops to 8 ft and the wind is a gentle cross-shore, but the forecast says it’s only marginal. The period is short at 9 seconds, so it won’t have much shape.
The long and short of it is: for the next 16 days, there’s only one window that’s even worth a serious look, and that’s the 1st of September. It’s big, it’s powerful, and it’s not for the faint-hearted. If you’re a beginner or intermediate, you’re better off sitting this one out. The consistent wind and onshore conditions for the rest of the period mean the chop and lump will be a real problem.
Hang in there, folks. The ocean will turn around eventually.
