The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s ahead for our local stretch.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a tough watch. From now through to the end of August, the wind is just relentless from the ENE, blowing cross-onshore day after day. The swell is small to moderate, but the wind messes up any chance of clean waves. We’re looking at moderate to strong cross-onshore conditions, making everything choppy and lumpy. There’s a real gap here with no surf worth paddling out for right through to the start of September.
The only real standout in this entire run is on Tuesday the 1st of September and into Wednesday the 2nd. We get a big pulse of energy from the east. The combined swell energy jumps massively, hitting 2447 on Tuesday afternoon and then 2489 on Wednesday morning. That’s a very strong push of power. Swell heights are around 8 ft, with a long period of 13 seconds on Tuesday afternoon, easing to 12 seconds through Wednesday. That’s a proper groundswell. Periods that long mean the waves will have real shape and power, but at a beach break like Rabbit/Manana Island, it can break a bit too straight and close out. It’s expert-only territory at that size. The wind is still cross-onshore though, from the NE at 25 mph, so it’s going to be messy and lumpy. The water temp is about average for this time of year. For anyone thinking of a paddle, those two days hold the most energy, but the wind is a real problem. Honestly, with that much wind and solid swell, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, because a blank run like this can change, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
