The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, this is Rusty checkin' in with a look at Rabbit/Manana Island. Let's be straight with you: the next two weeks look like a real challenge. Water temps are sittin' around 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no shock there, but the surf conditions? Gonna be a frustrating run.
The entire 16-day window is a bust for good surf. From August 20th all the way through to the morning of September 3rd, every single session is callin' it "poor surf conditions." That's a solid two weeks of pretty much nothing to get excited about. The wind is relentless from the ENE, mostly cross-onshore to onshore, and it's gonna make a mess of things. We'll see a few pulses of swell, like a moderate energy event around the 23rd with combined energy in the 367, but it's paired with a strong breeze that'll have it choppy and lumpy. Not worth paddlin' out for.
The swell picks up a bit towards the end of the month, with some strong energy readings popping up. On the 28th, we see a long-period groundswell of 16 seconds from the east, with combined energy hitting 678, but the fresh cross-shore wind will have it all cross-chopped. Then August 31st and September 1st bring some serious power – combined energy over 1,500 and swell heights around 7ft to 8ft from the ENE. That's expert territory, but with a fresh cross-onshore breeze, it'll be a messy, lumpy paddle. For the average surfer, it's a no-go.
Now, there's a tiny glimmer right at the very end of the forecast. On September 3rd, Thursday afternoon, we finally get a shift. The wind swings to the SSW, blowin' gentle offshore, and the ENE swell is 4ft with an 8-second period. Combined energy is moderate at 295, and it's expected to be clean. That's a real "if you can get in the water, do it" moment. It's a long way out, so take it with a grain of salt, but it's the one standout. The next morning, September 4th, Friday, also looks promising with a light ESE cross-offshore breeze and a 6ft swell pushing combined energy to 423, but the wind shifts back onshore by the afternoon, so it's a short window.
Overall, this is a tough stretch. If you're a die-hard, keep an eye on that September 3rd afternoon for a brief, clean session. Otherwise, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing with all this cross-onshore wind. Fingers crossed the forecasts change, but for now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
