The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you, the outlook for Rabbit/Manana Island is a bit of a rough patch for a while. The onshore winds have a firm grip on things and aren't letting go easily.
For the next ten days or so, from Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of August, it’s pretty grim. The wind is hammering in from the ENE and NE at 18 to 28 mph, with a lot of cross and cross-on conditions. There's swell on the table, mostly between 5 ft and 7 ft, but it's coming with a short, weak 6 to 8-second period and combined energy figures mostly in the 200-700 range (moderate to strong energy), but it’s all ruined by the wind. The wave comment says "poor surf conditions" nearly every day, and that's exactly what it looks like – lumpy, choppy, messy.
Things stay poor right into the first few days of September. On Tuesday the 1st, we finally see a shift in wind direction to NNE at 15 mph, going onshore, but the swell is still messy with a 5 ft ENE swell and a 10-second period, giving moderate energy (470). It's still not great.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning has a light N wind at 6 mph blowing onshore, with a 5 ft NE swell at 9 seconds (energy at 307 – moderate). But the standout is the afternoon. Glassy conditions with zero wind, and a 5 ft swell from the ENE at 8 seconds. The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions" and it's got a score that finally makes you look twice. It's not a massive swell, but that clean, glassy surface will make all the difference. This is the best on offer across the whole 16-day window.
Thursday the 3rd sees the wind swing back around to the east at 6 mph in the morning, giving some cross-shore action with a 6 ft ENE swell (7 seconds, energy 331). It's marginal though, and by the afternoon it's back to cross-onshore choppiness. The end of the outlook into the first week of September stays poor or marginal, with more ENE winds and messy cross-shore conditions.
So, if you're desperate for a paddle, keep your eyes on Wednesday afternoon the 2nd of September. That glassy session is your one true stand-out in an otherwise windy fortnight.
