The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – looking at the forecast for Rabbit/Manana Island over the next couple of weeks, it’s a tough stretch. The whole run is tagged as poor surf conditions, and there’s no standout session to get excited about. The wind is a persistent problem, mostly blowing out of the ENE to NE, cross-onshore or cross, and that’s keeping everything chopped up and lumpy. Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
The first week, from Tuesday 14 July through to around Monday 20 July, we see swell heights between 3 ft and 6 ft, but it’s mostly short-period windswell at 6 to 8 seconds. The combined wave energy starts out moderate (447) on Tuesday morning, but drops off and stays in the 150 to 400 range – nothing juicy. Winds are a moderate to fresh breeze, meaning it’s messy out there. A surfer might find a wave here or there, but it’s really more suited for a kite session if you’re keen. The break is exposed to the NNE, and the swell is coming from the NE to ENE, so it’s onshore, and the cross-chop is relentless.
Heading into the second week, from Tuesday 21 July onward, the pattern doesn’t really change. The swell stays in the 3 ft to 6 ft range, with the wind still a fresh cross-onshore. The period does push up a bit on 24 July with a 17-second groundswell from the east, but with that cross-onshore wind (NE 18 mph), it’s still poor surf. Combined energy climbs into the 500-600 range (strong), but the wind ruins it. There’s a gap where nothing improves; it’s just a long run of average-to-poor conditions right through to Wednesday 29 July.
Honestly, there’s no best option here. If I had to pick the least awful time, the morning of 24 July might be the most interesting with that long-period east swell (3 ft, 17 seconds), but the cross-onshore wind means it’s lumpy. That long period is better suited for a reef or point, but Rabbit/Manana is an exposed spot and it’s just not coming together. This is a blank run, but forecasts can always change – it tends not to stay this poor forever.
Rusty.
