The Lowdown
Alright, this is a tough one to call. Right now, and for the next two weeks, the consistent ENE breeze is gonna be a real issue for the breaks around here. The wind stays cross to cross-onshore, and it’s looking like a messy, lumpy ocean for the most part. The swell is there, but it’s not working with the wind. The water temp is sitting right around 79°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a hood.
Let’s start with Rabbit/Manana Island. It’s exposed to the NNE, and the swell that’s coming in is from the ENE and E, which isn’t ideal. The swell heights are floating between 4 ft and 6 ft, but the wind is a killer. On Tuesday, July 14th, we’ve got a 4 ft NE swell with a short 7-second period and a cross-on wind. That’s choppy stuff. The combined energy is moderate at 219, but it’s not going to be a fun paddle. The wind picks up even more as the week goes on, becoming a fresh breeze at 18-22 mph, which is going to kill the surface.
The first real window of opportunity might be around Sunday, July 19th, when the swell bumps up to 5 ft from the E, but again, the wind is cross-onshore. The energy climbs to 362, which is starting to get into that moderate range, but the conditions are still saying “poor surf.” You’re looking at a fresh cross-shore chop that’s hard to read.
The end of the month, July 25th to 27th, shows a rise in energy, hitting 508 and then 655, but it’s still the same story: a cross-on breeze and a lumpy ocean. The swell period jumps to 14-15 seconds on July 27th, which is a long period groundswell, but the direction is still from the E, which isn’t the optimum NNE for this spot. That long period might make it break a bit straight at this beach setup, and the wind is still cross-onshore.
Honestly, there’s no standout day here. The wind just doesn’t swing offshore, and the swell direction is never ideal. The consistent cross-onshore breeze means the waves are going to be choppy and blown out. If you’re a beginner, the swell isn’t too big, but the conditions are rough. For experts, it’s just not going to be a clean session. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now, with that steady wind.
Keep an eye on it, but I’d be looking elsewhere for the next two weeks.
