Table - best surf conditions forecast for Rabbit/Manana Island over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Well, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Rabbit/Manana Island is a tough one. We’ve got a solid run of consistent swell on the way, but the wind just won’t play ball. We’re looking at a full 16-day stretch, but the first decent surf recommendation doesn’t pop up until Friday the 10th of July, and honestly, it’s a bit of a bleak picture right through.
The overall pattern is a persistent east-northeast to easterly swell, with a short, 7 to 8-second period. That’s a real windswell, not much grunt behind it. The real killer here is the wind, ripping from the east-northeast at 18 to 25 mph, keeping the ocean cross-onshore or directly cross-shore the whole time. That’s just messy, lumpy, choppy conditions. There’s no standout session; every single period in the forecast is marked as poor surf.
There’s a decent amount of energy in the water, with energy levels reaching as high as 596 (moderate to strong) on Sunday the 12th of July, with a swell height hitting 7 ft. But with that wind, it’ll be a washing machine. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Even into the second week, from the 17th of July onward, the swell sticks around in the 3 ft to 5 ft range, but the wind isn’t letting up. We get a slight drop in wind speed to a moderate 16 mph on the afternoon of Friday the 17th, but it’s still a cross-shore chop.
Honestly, for this exposed spot (best with a north-northeast swell direction), all that short-period easterly swell and constant strong breeze makes it look better suited for a kite than a paddle. This spot is fairly consistent, but without a break in the wind, it’s just not going to clean up. Frustrating, I know. Keep an eye out for a change in the forecast.
Rusty.
