The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s get into it.
First up, we’ve got Psiu, a beach and point setup. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing weird happening there. The first few days are a write-off – Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th are mostly blown out with onshore winds and messy conditions. You’ll see some small swell around 3ft to 4ft from the ESE, but it’s not worth paddling out for with that wind.
Saturday the 12th morning is where it starts to look interesting. Early doors, we’ve got a light WNW offshore breeze at 3 mph, clean conditions, and a chest-high 4ft swell out of the ESE at 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is moderate at best (276), but that morning glass means Psiu will be smooth and fun for a beginner-plus crew. This is the pick of the first week. The afternoon gets sketchy again with onshore chop.
Sunday the 13th through Monday the 14th is more of the same – cleanable mornings are let down by onshore wind and lumpy surf. The swell stays around 4ft to 4ft, but the quality is poor.
Tuesday the 15th morning offers a small window: 3ft ESE swell, clean with a light NE breeze, but it’s weak energy (128) and only surfable. Not a standout, just a session to wet the suit.
The 16th and 17th see some size pick up – Thursday the 17th morning has a 5ft ESE swell, but the period is only 8 seconds, and the cross-onshore wind ruins it. That same day has a notable spike in combined energy (771), but with poor conditions, it’s a no-go for paddle surfing.
A long stretch of mediocre conditions follows until Wednesday the 23rd morning. That’s our real standout of the 16-day window. Early on the 23rd, we get NNE light air, clean glass, and a 3ft SE swell at 9 seconds. Combined energy is moderate (261), but it’s clean, with good shape potential for a point break. The swell direction aligns with the optimum S direction for Psiu. This is the one to pencil in for a quiet, uncrowded dawn session. Keep in mind, Psiu can draw a crowd sometimes, so get there early.
From the 24th onward, it’s back to onshore slop. The 25th has a short-period 4ft E swell at 6 seconds and lumpy conditions – not worth it.
Bottom line: the first few days are a bust. Saturday 12th morning is your best early call. For the long range, circle Wednesday 23rd morning – that’s the cleanest, most promising window for a real session.
Rusty.
