Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s look at what’s on offer for Paignton. I’ll give it to you straight – the next 16 days are a tough watch. We’ve got a long stretch of flat or near-flat conditions to kick things off, and even when some swell does show up, the wind is going to be a problem.
The first real sign of life is on Wednesday, July 8th, but it’s a tiny, weak 0.7 ft windswell from the east with a period of just 3 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 1, so barely a ripple. The wind is cross-onshore, making it a messy, choppy affair. Honestly, not worth getting wet for.
Through the rest of that week and into the next, we see a gradual build. By Friday, July 10th, we’re looking at 4 ft to 4 ft east swell, but the period is still short (5-6 seconds), and the onshore easterly wind is going to chop it up. The combined energy stays low, hitting 77 to 104.
The swell gets a bit more serious from Saturday, July 11th onwards, with heights between 5 ft and 6 ft from the east (period 6-7 seconds). The combined energy rises into the moderate range (138 to 377). But here’s the kicker – the wind is relentless from the east-northeast or east, blowing cross-on or directly onshore. This is going to make for lumpy, choppy, and poor-quality surf. It’s a beach break setup, and with that wind, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle-surfing one.
The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
After July 16th, the swell fades away again, and we’re back to flat, clean conditions with no surf. So, the entire 16-day window is a write-off for a proper surf. We’ve got about a week of nothing, then a week of poor, wind-affected swell, then another flat spell. There’s no standout day here, not even a close call. The best you could hope for is a very early morning session on the 11th or 12th if the wind eases off, but the forecast doesn’t suggest that right now.
Keep your eye on the forecasts, though. It tends not to stay this poor for long. For now, it’s a case of waiting for the next proper groundswell with a clean offshore wind.
