The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown on Paignton for the next couple of weeks.
I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – it’s a rough stretch. We’ve got a big gap of flatness right from the start all the way through to the end of next week. The first few days are a total bust. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are tiny with waves around 0.7ft to 2ft, short periods of 3 to 5 seconds, and the energy is pathetic (combined energy 1 to 9). The wind is either onshore or cross, so it’s just choppy junk. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd are completely flat. Thursday the 23rd brings a tiny 2ft wave from the east, but it’s a short 4-second period and the wind is onshore, so it’s a no-go.
From Thursday the 24th all the way through to the 28th, it’s flat, flat, flat. The wind blows offshore at times, but there’s no swell to push. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, but that’s small comfort.
Now, if you’re hanging on, there is one tiny glimmer. Wednesday the 29th of July. We’ve got a 2ft bump from the northeast, period still short at 4 seconds, so it’s windswell. But the wind is offshore from the WSW, light in the morning, and it’s clean. The combined energy is weak (18), but for a break that’s inconsistent and only fairly exposed, this is your best shot. Paignton is a beginner spot, and this is the only time you’ll find anything rideable. Crowds are possible, so be ready to share.
After that, it flattens out again through the end of the month and into early August. There’s a tiny 1ft ripple on the 3rd of August from the north-northeast, but with a fresh cross-offshore wind and energy of just 2, it’s not worth paddling for.
Bottom line: this is a lean period for Paignton. The break is inconsistent by nature, and this forecast shows exactly why. The only real window to get a few clean ones is the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. Keep your expectations real low, and you might just have a laugh.
Rusty.
