Table - best surf conditions forecast for Paignton over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a pretty grim stretch for Paignton. The forecast is full of “poor surf conditions” and scores of zero for a solid week and a half. We’re looking at a long, dry gap from now until Thursday the 16th of July. The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, and the energy is just pathetic. On Saturday the 11th, there’s a little bump of 3ft to 4ft from the east with a short period of 6 seconds, but it’s all chopped up. Then Sunday the 12th brings a bit more size, 5ft to 6ft from the east, but the energy is still weak (263) and the wind is a fresh cross-on at 19 mph, making it lumpy. By Monday the 13th, the swell hits 8ft from the east with a period of 8 seconds and energy up to 588, but it’s a strong breeze onshore, so it’s just a messy, blown-out wall. Not a single day in that first week is worth paddling out.
The only glimmer of hope in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Thursday the 16th of July. We get a small clean wave with the wind coming cross-offshore from the NNW at just 9 mph. The swell is 3ft from the east with a 7 second period, and energy is low at 75. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and honestly, that’s the best we’ve got. For a beginner spot that’s inconsistent and sometimes crowded, you might get a few fun little walls if you’re desperate.
After that, it’s back to nothing. A few days of clean, tiny waves under 3ft, but they’re barely breaking. There’s a glassy morning on Thursday the 23rd of July with 1ft from the northeast, but it’s just too small. On Friday the 24th of July, the wind goes offshore from the west at 6 mph, but there’s no swell at all.
The water temperature anomaly is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit surprises there.
If you’re desperate for a surf, the only real standout, and I use that term loosely, is the morning of Thursday the 16th of July. Otherwise, this blank run is just typical for the area – it’s a quiet spell, and forecasts can change. For now, the kites might have more fun on those windy, choppy days than we will.
Rusty.
