Alright, I’m looking at the charts for Paignton and, honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about at all for the next sixteen days. It’s going to be a tough run for anyone chasing waves.
The whole period starts flat and stays that way for a long, long time. From Friday the 3rd right through to the morning of Wednesday the 8th of July, there’s simply no swell energy registering. That’s about a five-day gap with absolutely no surf on offer. The water temp is reading 64°, which is about 5° warmer than the long-term average. That’s way warmer than usual for the time of year—weird but true.
There’s a faint pulse trying to show up on the 8th, but it’s pretty much nothing. Wednesday morning the 8th sees a tiny 0.7 feet of swell from the NNE, with a short period of 3 seconds. That’s just wind slop. The combined energy is a measly 1 (weak energy), and with an easterly onshore wind chopping it up, it’s not worth getting wet for.
Thursday the 9th is just as weak—0.7 feet to 1 feet from the ENE and E, still with a 3-second period and onshore wind. Energy stays in the 1 to 3 range. Dead.
Then we get a little bump from Friday the 10th into the weekend. On Friday the 10th, we see 4 feet from the E with a period of 6 seconds and about 80 units of energy, but it’s got a solid 12 mph onshore wind from the ENE. It’s messy.
Saturday the 11th morning sees the best of this meager run: 4 feet from the E at 6 seconds, with combined energy hitting 109 (moderate energy). It’s cross-onshore from the ENE though, so it’s going to be choppy. This is about the only wave size that a beginner could handle—still not great for anyone. The closest thing to a standout, if I had to pick, would be the morning of Saturday the 11th, but the wind just ruins any real quality.
Sunday the 12th stays around 4 feet to 4 feet from the E, again with a 6-second period, but the wind remains cross-onshore from the SE or ENE, keeping things choppy. Energy reaches 162 on Sunday afternoon, but with that onshore flow, you’re looking at bumpy, unsurfable conditions.
The following week is more of the same—small, weak, onshore wind. Monday the 13th has 4 feet from the E, but it’s onshore and messy. By Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th, the wind kicks up to 19 mph from the ENE, and the swell drops to under 3 feet. That’s a kite-surfing breeze, not a surfing breeze.
Thursday the 16th offers a bit of clean-looking surf from the E at 4 feet, with a 6-second period and cross-offshore wind from the WSW. That’s the best looking day for a paddle if you’re desperate, but the energy is still only 112, and the period is short. It’s not going to be the wave of the month.
After that, it drops back to nothing Friday the 17th and flat again Saturday the 18th.
Honestly, this area is seeing a blank run that’s pretty normal when there’s no swell in the water. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing worth your time. Keep your gear dry.
