Alright, this is Rusty checkin' in from the South Devon coast. We've got a bit of a flat spell to start, so don't be in a rush to grab your board just yet.
Looks like we're looking at a proper dry run for the next few days, mate. Through to at least Wednesday the 8th, it's pretty much a no-go. The ocean’s got nothing happening – flat as a pancake with zero wave energy. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th see a tiny pulse creep in, but we're talking about weak, short-period windswell that barely registers. It’s just not worth wettin' a wetsuit for.
The real story here is a long pause. From now until around the 10th of July, there's just nothing to write home about. The first sniff of anything surfable shows up on Friday the 10th. That morning at Paignton, the water temp is a notable 64°F, which is much warmer than normal for the time of year. Even then, the swell is a measly 3ft from the ENE with a period of just 6 seconds, and it's almost flat by the afternoon. The combined energy is a weak (69) on Friday morning. It's glassy, mind you, so it'll be clean, but it's just too small to get excited about.
Saturday the 11th afternoon brings the best of a very average bunch. The swell at Paignton bumps up to 4ft from the east, still a short 6-second period, and it goes completely glassy. The combined energy is still weak (77). It'll be small and clean, okay for a beginner to get wet, but it's hardly a standout.
Beyond that, Sunday the 12th and into the following week sees some more size, with swell heights pushing 5ft on Sunday morning. But look at the wind – it's cross-onshore and choppy, and the quality is poor. The combined energy gets into the moderate range (193) on Sunday morning, but with that wind, the surf will be a messy, choppy mess. This setup, with onshore wind and a beach break, looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The whole window is pretty lean, mate. There's no real standout session. It just seems like a blank run is more the norm for this area right now.
Rusty.
