Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Paignton’s got cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough outlook. We’re looking at a proper dry spell for the first six days, from now through to the 8th of July. There’s just no surf to speak of. The ocean’s flat, so don’t bother waxing up just yet. It’s a real bummer, but it happens.
Now, things start to flicker back to life on Thursday the 9th. But honestly, it’s not much to write home about. We’re talkin’ tiny little windswell – 2 ft from the NE, with a short, weak 4-second period. The wind is onshore out of the ENE, making for messy conditions. Total wave energy is a paltry 7, which is basically nothing. It’s poor surf, plain and simple.
Friday the 10th sees a bit of a pulse. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the E, with a 6-second period. Wave energy climbs to 109 (moderate), but the wind is still onshore from the ENE, so it’s gonna be bumpy and uninviting. The afternoon drops to 3 ft, still choppy.
Saturday the 11th isn't much better. Another 4 ft E swell, 6-second period, energy at 123. But again, cross-onshore winds from the ENE in the morning and SSE in the afternoon will keep things choppy. It’s *surfable*, but not clean.
Honestly, through the rest of the period into the 18th, it’s a story of small, weak swells, wrong wind directions, and poor wave quality. We see a peak on the 11th, but the conditions just don’t line up.
If I had to pick the single best window, it’s the morning of Saturday the 11th of July. The swell is the biggest we’ll see at 4 ft from the east, and the wave energy is at its highest (123). It’s still a short-period E swell though, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and sectiony. The wind will be a cross-onshore, so it won’t be glassy, but it’s the most push we get all fortnight. It's a beginner-friendly size, too. Just don’t expect perfection.
For the rest of it, we’ve got days with 2 ft slop and onshore winds. The water temperature is currently 64°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze waiting for a set.
So, there’s your lot. A flat start, a mediocre middle, and a flat finish. The 11th is your best bet, but keep the expectations in check.
Rusty.
