Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the run for the next couple of weeks.
Mate, I’m not gonna lie to you – this is a grim stretch for Paignton. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for decent surf. There’s nothing that comes close to a recommendation. The first few days start with some swell on the 13th of July, but it’s useless. The wind is a mess, blowing cross-onshore from the NE at 25 mph, and the swell is short-period, wind-affected stuff. It’s just messy and blown out.
The water is abnormally warm right now, 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s well above average, but it won’t help the waves.
We get a bit of energy through the 14th and 15th, but it’s weak, with combined swell energy never breaking 300 (272 on Tuesday morning, dropping right off). The swell direction is all over the place, never lining up with the optimum east. The period is short, under 8 seconds, so it’s all windswell with no shape.
From the 16th onward, it’s just a slow fade into nothing. By the 18th, we’re down to 2 ft junk. From the 22nd of July through the 25th, the swell flatlines – zero surf. The offshore winds and glassy conditions on the 24th are a tease for a flat ocean. It’s not until the 26th that a bit of energy pops up, but it’s accompanied by a near gale from the east at 31 mph. That’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle surfing.
There is no standout. There is no best day. The consistent lack of surf here is a bit normal for this area in the summer – it’s an inconsistent spot, and this run is a classic blank spell. Forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
