Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, let’s get into it. Onrus is the only break chiming in here, and it’s a reef setup that needs the right direction. The swell window is SW, and it’s exposed, so when it lines up, it can fire. Water temp is sitting at 59.4°F, which is about average for this time of year – nothing unusual there.
First decent window hits Monday afternoon, July 6th. Glassy conditions, light W wind, swell 6.9 ft from WSW at 11 seconds. That’s got some grunt – combined energy reading 1080 – solid moderate to strong. This is a proper swell, but at 6.9 ft, it’s pushing into intermediate and above territory. For a reef break, that’s a good size, but beginners will find it a handful. The period is 11 seconds, so it’s groundswell, decent shape. The wind is glassy, which is rare and beautiful. Onrus can get crowded sometimes, so be ready to share, but this is a standout session for the experienced crew.
Tuesday morning, July 7th, keeps the goodness: glassy again, NNW wind near flat, swell 6.9 ft from SW, period 12 seconds, energy 1188 – even better. Tuesday afternoon switches to a light cross-off WSW wind at 3 mph, still clean, period bumps to 13 seconds, energy 1499. That’s a really nice run.
Wednesday morning, July 8th, holds: 6.9 ft SW swell, 12 seconds, WNW wind 9 mph cross-off, still clean, energy 2082 – strong. That’s three solid sessions in a row. Then Wednesday afternoon the wind swings SSE at 12 mph, onshore, cloudy, and the quality drops hard. That onshore wind kills it, and the energy spikes to 2218 but it’s messy. Thursday through Saturday get progressively worse – strong cross-onshore winds, lumpy, choppy. Thursday morning has 8.2 ft SW swell at 14 seconds, but ESE 12 mph cross-on ruins it – energy 2300 but not worth it. Friday and Saturday are worse, with rain and fresh onshore winds. That stretch is a write-off for surfing.
Sunday morning, July 12th, the swell drops to 4.9 ft from S at 11 seconds, but still cross-on E wind 12 mph, choppy. No good.
Then Monday July 13th brings a change: morning glassy again, N wind 3 mph, swell drops to 2.6 ft from SSW at 10 seconds – small, but clean. Energy only 242, weak. This is more of a longboard or small-wave fun session, but it’s glassy. Tuesday July 14th sees a bit of a bump: 3.0 ft SSW swell, 13 seconds, NW offshore wind 6 mph, energy 440 – still small but clean and offshore. That’s a nice little session for a log or a fish.
Wednesday July 15th is tiny – 1.3 ft SW swell, 16 seconds very long period, offshore NW wind 9 mph, energy 176. That’s marginal but clean. The long period means it’ll be straight and weak at this reef, but if you’ve got a longboard, you might catch something.
Thursday July 16th is promising: morning 4.9 ft WSW swell at 14 seconds, NW offshore 9 mph, energy 895 – borderline good. Afternoon picks up to 5.9 ft SW at 13 seconds, cross-off WNW wind 12 mph, energy 1110 – still clean. This is a decent option for intermediates.
Friday July 17th goes south again – rain, cross-on wind, chop. Saturday July 18th is pure poor with onshore SE 15 mph and building swell up to 9.8 ft – but the wind is onshore, so it’s just big and ugly.
Now, here’s the big one: Sunday July 19th. Morning glassy, NE wind 3 mph, 11.5 ft SW swell at 13 seconds – that’s huge. Energy reading 4912 – very strong. However, the finder notes this is too big for Onrus. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, a reef break at 11.5 ft with that much energy is going to be a beast. Afternoon has rain showers and cross wind, still 11.5 ft. This is not for the faint-hearted, but if you’re a charger, it’s there.
Monday July 20th and Tuesday July 21st continue with big swell – 8.2 ft to 9.8 ft – but winds are onshore or cross-on, making it messy and blown out. Tuesday afternoon July 21st goes glassy again, NE 3 mph, 9.8 ft SW swell at 15 seconds very long period, energy 4668 – again, too big for Onrus. That’s a raw, heavy session for experts only, and the long period will make it wall up on the reef.
Overall, the best standouts are the Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning block (July 6th to 8th) – glassy, clean, 6.
