The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Onrus over the next couple of weeks. Onrus is a reef break that’s rated for intermediate surfers, and it’s inconsistent, so it needs a bit of a lucky swell to line up. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about 1° cooler than usual for this time of year – basically average, nothing to write home about.
First real swing of the bat comes on Wednesday, 15 July. The morning swell is already looking promising: 4 ft from the SW with a long 17-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, full of energy, and combined energy is a strong 1088. And the wind is offshore light – WNW at 6 mph. Glorious, clean conditions for experienced surfers. The afternoon pushes the swell up to 7 ft, still from the SW, period 16 seconds, and the energy jumps to 2514. Winds stay light and cross-off, so the shape should hold well. This is the standout window of the entire forecast.
Thursday, 16 July, keeps the run going. Morning glassy conditions with glass NW wind and 8 ft SW swell at 13 seconds. Energy is 2002, and it’s glassy – that’s a dream for a reef break. The reef will really focus that long-period energy. Afternoon is still clean with 7 ft SW swell. This is right up there with Wednesday as the best on offer.
Now, Friday, 17 July, the wind swings cross-on from the east, and the swell drops a touch. Conditions take a real hit – it’s a write-off for the good stuff.
Saturday, 18 July, bounces back nicely. Morning offshore wind, WNW at 6 mph, with 4 ft S swell at 11 seconds. Energy is moderate (618). Afternoon is clean cross-off. Nice, but not a standout.
Sunday, 19 July, morning is a beauty – glassy calm, 6 ft WSW swell at 12 seconds, energy 1065. That’s excellent for experienced surfers again. The afternoon though gets a bit messy with cross-shore wind and bigger, lumpy 8 ft swell.
Monday, 20 July, is onshore and choppy. Not worth it.
Then Tuesday, 21 July, morning glass again with a solid 8 ft SSW swell at 14 seconds and energy 2232. This is a real quality window – clean, glassy, and the swell is lined up. The afternoon is clean cross-off with 8 ft SW swell and 2684 energy. Excellent.
Now, from Wednesday, 22 July, things get too big. 12 ft SW swell with offshore wind, but it’s too much for this break – only for experts, and even then, it’s pushing the limits. Energy is massive at 5122. The next few days are all like that – swell over 10 ft, with some days hitting 16 ft. The break can’t handle it. That’s a gap of no good surf from the 22nd through to the 27th.
Eventually, on Monday, 27 July, the swell drops back to 6 ft from the WSW, with offshore wind at 6 mph and energy 1082. That’s back to excellent for experienced surfers again. The afternoon sees stronger wind but still clean cross-off.
After that, another big pulse hits on the 28th and 29th – 10-13 ft glassy conditions, but again too big for Onrus.
So, the absolute best of the lot – the standouts – are Wednesday 15 July through Thursday 16 July, and Tuesday 21 July. Clean, near-perfect conditions for a reef break. The rest of the window is either blown out, too small, or way too big. Still, for a spot that’s normally inconsistent, this is a solid run.
