Right, grab a coffee, and let’s have a proper look at the next couple of weeks. The only spot on the radar here is Onrus, a reef break that’s exposed to the SW. It’s an inconsistent wave at the best of times, so when the stars align, you take notice. The water is sitting at 59°, which is basically spot-on normal for this time of year, so no nasty surprises on that front.
We kick off on Saturday the 4th of July with a sneaky little window. Morning sees a clean 5ft wave from the WNW with a 9 mph offshore wind from the NNW. There’s a decent amount of grunt with a combined swell energy of 515 (moderate energy), but the period is only 7 seconds – that’s a short-period wind swell, which means it’ll be a bit crumbly and not super deep. It’ll be rideable and clean though.
The real standout of the whole run lands on Saturday afternoon. The swell drops to 2ft, but it swings to the SW, and the period jumps to 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy reading is 670 (moderate energy) with a gentle offshore wind. For a reef break, that combo is gold. The tide will matter, but if you get the timing right, this will be the cleanest, most fun wave of the week. Crowds are possible here, so get out early.
Sunday the 5th is still okay in the morning – 2ft from the SW at 14 seconds, clean with a light cross-off breeze – but the energy drops to 385. By Sunday afternoon, it picks up to 5ft from the W at 8 seconds, and it’s clean again. That’s a fun afternoon session, but nothing epic.
Monday the 6th gets tricky. The swell jumps to 7ft from the WSW with an 11-second period, but the wind is side-shore and is going to mess with the surface. The energy is high at 1108 (strong energy), but the conditions are marginal – that’s more of a kite-surfing setup than paddle surfing at a beach-and-reef mix.
Now, here’s the big one. Tuesday the 7th looks unreal. Glassy offshore wind, 7ft of SW swell, and a 12-second period. The energy is 1168 in the morning and 1323 in the afternoon – that’s powerful, consistent swell. This is wave energy for experienced surfers only, and the glassy conditions will make it clean as a whistle. Onrus at 7ft and glassy? That’s the pick of the whole outlook. Get it while it’s good.
Unfortunately, from Wednesday the 8th through to Saturday the 11th, the wind turns ugly. We’re looking at strong onshore and cross-onshore winds from the E and ESE, blowing 16 to 22 mph, with the swell sitting between 7ft and 8ft from the SSW. The energy readings are through the roof (up to 2335 – very strong energy), but it’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. Honestly, that’s a hard pass for paddle surfing.
A quiet spell hits from Sunday the 12th through to Wednesday the 15th. The swell drops to 2ft – 3ft, but the winds are light and variable, sometimes glassy. It’s clean, but tiny. You’ll need a longboard or a fish, and you’ll be scratching for waves. Thursday and Friday the 16th & 17th are flat to small with poor wind, but then Saturday the 18th brings a new pulse: 5ft to 6ft of SW groundswell (13-14 second period) with clean cross-off winds. The energy is 1032 (strong energy) – that’s a promising-looking setup, but it’s a week and a half away, so treat it as a “watch this space” situation. Sunday the 19th is back to onshore junk.
Honestly, if you’re keen, your best bets are Saturday afternoon the 4th for that clean 15-second glass, and then absolutely lock in Tuesday the 7th for the biggest, cleanest swell of the run. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too far out to get excited about.
