Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local reef.
Alright, Onrus. It’s an exposed reef break that needs a good SW swell to really fire, and the pattern over the next couple of weeks is a bit of a mixed bag. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is a touch cooler than average for this time of year, but nothing wild. Right now, on Friday afternoon, we’ve got some clouds and a moderate offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph. The swell is 8ft from the WNW with a short 8-second period. That’s a lot of water moving with moderate-strong energy (1388), but the short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy and walled-up – this is for experienced surfers only. The wind is clean, but the quality is only so-so for the average punter.
Saturday morning looks much cleaner. The swell has dropped to 2ft from the SW, but check this out – the period is a long 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy (440). The wind is a light NNW breeze, keeping it cross-off and tidy. It’ll be small but lined-up and perfect for a longboard or a fish. The standout here is Sunday morning: we’ve got 2ft SW swell, a 14-second period, and a light NW offshore wind. Glassy, clean, and that long period will wrap nicely around the reef. It won’t be big, but the wave shape will be beautiful. That’s your best bet early on.
Monday the 6th sees a jump in size to 7ft from the WSW with a 12-second period (1238 energy), but the wind turns cross-shore from the ENE, so it’s not clean. Tuesday is similar – good-sized swell but cross-on winds kill the vibe. Wednesday morning the 8th is a real standout: glassy, 7ft SW swell, 13-second period, and energy right up at 2569. That is a powerful, clean swell for the reef. If you’re an experienced surfer, that’s the session to circle. It’s the best on offer in this whole run.
Then things get ugly. From Wednesday afternoon through to Saturday the 11th, the wind cranks from the E and ESE at 16 mph, churning up that strong SW swell. The surf will be big and powerful (energy over 2000), but it’s a mess – cross-onshore and choppy. Not for paddling. Maybe worth a look for the kite crew.
We get a break Sunday the 12th with a cleaner cross-off breeze and smaller 3ft S swell (513 energy). It’s a nice reset. Monday the 13th has a fresh 19 mph offshore from the NNW, but it’s tiny – only 2ft. Too small to bother with.
Now, the long-range outlook for the second week: Wednesday the 15th through Thursday the 16th, the swell jumps to a massive 10ft from the SW with 14-second periods and energy over 3000. That is a big, powerful groundswell, but the file says it’s too big for this break. Even with offshore and glassy winds, it’ll be a washing machine. Leave that one to the tow crews.
Friday the 17th brings it back to a more manageable 8ft SW swell with a clean cross-off breeze – good for experienced surfers again. And Saturday morning the 18th looks glassy with a 5ft WSW swell, 12-second period (1154 energy). That’s a solid, clean finisher to the run.
So the two real standouts? Wednesday morning the 8th for the big, clean, powerful swell, and Sunday the 12th for a smaller, cleaner, more relaxed session. Don’t sleep on Saturday morning the 18th either. Onrus is inconsistent, so when it lines up, you get in.
Rusty.
