Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Alright, listen up. We’ve got a classic tale of two weeks ahead here at Onrus. This reef break gets exposed to that SW swell, and it looks like it’s gonna start pumping right out of the gate this Tuesday, July 7th. We’re talking about a solid 7ft SW groundswell with a 12-second period. That’s proper ocean energy (1188), and with glassy, offshore winds from the north in the morning, you’re looking at some absolutely pristine conditions. This is one of the standouts, but it’s no beginner wave. At 7ft, it’s already getting into intermediate territory, and with that long period and exposed reef setup, only experienced surfers are gonna be handling this beast. The water temp anomaly is about average for July, so just your usual winter wetsuit.
That Tuesday afternoon stays clean with a cross-off wind, and that swell sticks around, even picking up a touch on Wednesday morning with a 13-second period and 7ft. The energy jumps up to 2082, which is solid. But that’s where the good times end for a while. From Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, things go south. A strong onshore wind kicks in from the SSE, blowing right into the face of the 7ft swell. Thursday is a complete write-off with 8ft and onshore howling, and Friday through Sunday is all cross-onshore chop with energy winding down. It’s a rough patch, but the consistency of the swell direction means the reef will still be taking the hit.
Then there's a lull. Monday July 13th and Tuesday July 14th offer small waves around 2ft to 3ft. Clean, glassy conditions make it surfable for a mellow session, and the energy is down around 207-299, but nothing to get excited about.
Here’s where it gets interesting again. Look at Saturday July 18th. We get a return of a chunky 8ft SW groundswell, period 12 seconds, and the wind goes glassy again from the NW. The energy is right back up to 1598. This is your other true standout. Same set-up as the start: clean, powerful, and for the experienced crew only. That glassy Saturday is followed by another great Sunday morning, July 19th, with an 8ft SSW swell and light offshore winds, energy at 1680. The session Sunday afternoon drops a bit to 5ft but stays clean. The side-off conditions persist into Monday July 20th with waist-high leftovers, nice and clean.
There’s a bit of a gap through the middle of the second week. The 21st sees some strong wind and messy conditions, but then Wednesday July 22nd throws a curveball. A 7ft swell, but this time from the west, with a short period of just 7 seconds. The energy is still decent (671), and it’s clean with light winds, but that short period makes for a weaker, less powerful wave on the reef. It’s surfable, but not the same quality as the big SW groundswells.
Overall, the best bets are Tuesday July 7th and Saturday July 18th. Both are big, clean, and powerful SW swells with glassy to light offshore winds. If you’re up for the size, those are the days. The rest of the window is either too small, blown out, or just average.
Rusty out.
