The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at what’s coming up for Onrus. This is a reef setup, and it’s inconsistent, so when it fires, it’s a treat, but you’ve gotta be patient. We’ve got a cracking run of surf starting this Friday, the 17th of July, and it’s going to be a wild ride.
The water temp is sitting at 58.6°, which is about 1.3° cooler than normal for this time of year, so nothing too wild, just a bit of a chill in the water.
This Friday morning, the 17th, we’re kicking off with a solid 6.2ft SW swell with a period of 11 seconds. The wind is glassy from the NNW at 3 mph, so it’s clean as a whistle. The combined energy is moderate at 819, and it’s going to be a beauty. Friday afternoon holds at 5.6ft, still glassy, still SW. This is a standout for the early part of the forecast – clean, solid, and the reef will be handling it well.
Saturday the 18th is a bit smaller, with 4.6ft SW swell, but the wind is offshore from the WNW at 6 mph in the morning, turning cross-off in the afternoon. It’s clean, fun, and the energy is still moderate (589-726). Sunday the 19th sees a bump up to 5.6ft, with a longer period of 12 seconds from the WSW. The morning is offshore and clean, with moderate energy (968). This is another standout – long period groundswell, perfect for this reef. Just be aware, the afternoon gets a bit cross-shore and messy, so get in early.
Monday the 20th is a bit smaller again, 4.9ft SW, with 11-second period and cross-off winds. It’s clean and fun, but nothing special. Then Tuesday the 21st, we get a real treat. The morning is 5.2ft SW with a 14-second period, cross-off wind, and clean. The afternoon, though, is the pick of the whole run: 7.2ft SW, 14-second period, glassy conditions. The combined energy jumps to 1873, which is strong. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – long, powerful lines on the reef. This is a true standout.
Wednesday the 22nd gets bigger. Morning is 8.2ft WSW with a 13-second period, offshore wind from the NW at 16 mph, and clean. The energy is 2230 – strong. This is getting into expert territory. The afternoon pushes 9.8ft, and the report says it’s too big for this break. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are similar – massive 9.8ft to 13.1ft SW swells, with periods up to 18 seconds, and glassy conditions. The energy is extreme (10580 on Thursday afternoon). This is for experienced surfers only, and even then, it might be a handful. The wind is good, but the size is gnarly.
After that, things get messy. Saturday the 25th has a 9.8ft SW swell, but the wind is howling from the ESE at 25-28 mph, cross-on and messy. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Sunday the 26th is still big (9.8ft), but the wind is cross, and the energy is still strong. It’s not great for surfing.
We then have a bit of a lull in the quality for a few days. Monday the 27th has a 7.9ft SW swell with a 15-second period, but the wind is cross-shore, making it messy. The afternoon glass offs with a 7.2ft, 14-second swell, and it’s back to excellent for experienced surfers. Tuesday the 28th is smaller, 5.2ft, glassy in the morning, but the afternoon has onshore wind, so it’s marginal.
Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th are a mixed bag. Wednesday is small (3.6ft) and onshore, so forget it. Thursday the 30th is huge again – 13.1ft from the W with a 12-second period, glassy in the afternoon, but it’s too big for the break. Friday the 31st of July is even bigger, 14.8ft W, with a 13-second period, but again, too big for most.
Finally, on Saturday the 1st of August, we get a good one. The morning is 8.2ft SSW with a 12-second period, offshore wind from the NNW at 9 mph, and clean. The energy is strong at 3018. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and a solid way to end the forecast window. The afternoon is 7.9ft from the S, with a 12-second period, and offshore wind, but it’s a bit stronger.
So, your best bets are this Friday the 17th, Saturday the 18th, and Sunday the 19th for clean, fun surf. The absolute standout is Tuesday the 21st afternoon – that glassy, 7.2ft, 14-second swell on the reef will be magic. The second week is a bit of a roll of the dice, with a lot of big, powerful swells that are best left
