The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for Onrus over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a real mixed bag coming up, but the good news is there’s some serious swell on the horizon. The first few days are a bit of a warm-up, but from Sunday morning, things start to get interesting. The water temp is sitting right on 59.9°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Saturday, 18 July kicks things off with a clean 4.6ft SW swell at 9 seconds. The wind is a light offshore from the WNW, so the surface will be tidy. The wave energy is moderate (585), and while it’s not massive, it’s a fun size for an intermediate. The inconsistent nature of the reef means you’ll have to be patient, but it’s a solid start.
Sunday, 19 July is where it starts to build. The morning brings a solid 6.2ft WSW swell, with a long 12-second period, giving it some real grunt (combined energy 1135). The wind is a moderate offshore from the WNW, so it’ll be clean and powerful. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon sees it jump to 8.2ft, but the wind goes cross-offshore, so it’s still ridable, just a bit more tricky.
Monday, 20 July is a real gem. The morning is glassy, with a light northerly wind and a clean 5.6ft SW swell. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s a nice, workable wave. The combined energy is moderate (540), but the glassy conditions make it a standout for a morning session. Afternoon goes cross-shore and the swell drops a touch, so stick to the morning.
Tuesday, 21 July is the absolute standout of the entire forecast. The morning is glassy again, with a 6.6ft SW swell that has a very long 14-second period. The combined energy is strong (1540), and those long-period lines will be wrapping around the reef beautifully. The wind is light, glassy, perfect. This is the one to circle. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-offshore wind, but the morning is the magic window.
Wednesday, 22 July – this is where it gets big. The swell hits 9.8ft from the WSW, and while the wind is offshore, the forecast says it’s simply too big for this break. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it’s pushing it. The combined energy is massive (2347), so unless you’re a local charger, give it a miss.
Thursday, 23 July – the swell is still huge, 9.8ft with a very long 17-second period, and the energy is off the charts (6077). The wind is a cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. It’s a no-go for paddling; this looks more like a day for the kite surfers.
Friday, 24 July – still massive, 9.8ft with a 14-second period. The morning is glassy, but the size is still too much for a practical paddle session. The afternoon goes onshore, so it’s a washout.
Saturday, 25 July – the swell drops to 8.2ft, but the wind is a cross-onshore, making it choppy and unappealing. Not worth the drive.
Sunday, 26 July – things settle down. The morning brings a 6.2ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is strong (2038), and the wind is a light cross-offshore, so it’s clean. The afternoon is glassy with a 6.6ft SSW swell, also with a very long 15-second period. This is another excellent window for experienced surfers, with those long-period lines offering plenty of power.
Monday, 27 July – nice and clean. The morning is a 6.9ft SW swell with a 13-second period, and the wind is light cross-offshore. The afternoon is a solid 5.6ft with offshore winds. Both are excellent for experienced surfers.
Tuesday, 28 July – a 7.2ft swell in the morning with a cross-offshore wind, clean and powerful. The afternoon gets a bit windier and the rain comes in, but the morning is the pick.
Wednesday, 29 July – the swell picks up again to 8.2ft, with a strong offshore wind. It’s clean and powerful, but the size is again for experienced crew only. The afternoon is 9.8ft, too big for the break.
Thursday, 30 July –
