The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s on the cards for Onrus over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a decent run of surf coming up, starting this Friday the 17th of July and it looks like the waves will be hanging around for a while. The water temp is sitting at 58.8°, which is only slightly cooler than average for this time of year, so nothing too wild.
First up, Friday the 17th kicks things off with a solid 6.2 ft swell out of the southwest. The period of 11 seconds means it’s a nice groundswell, with good energy behind it – moderate energy at that, around 819. The wind is glassy, so expect clean, groomed lines at Onrus. Friday afternoon drops a touch to 5.6 ft, but still glassy and clean. This is a great start.
Saturday the 18th is a bit smaller, with 4.6 ft swell from the southwest, but with offshore wind in the morning, it’ll be clean and fun. The combined energy is in the moderate range. A solid day for a paddle.
Sunday the 19th morning sees a bigger pulse: 5.6 ft swell from the west-southwest, 12-second period and moderate offshore wind. The energy is building to 968 – a strong, punchy wave. The afternoon gets a touch bigger at 5.9 ft but goes cross-shore, so it might get a little bumpy. Still, the morning is a standout for this first weekend.
Monday the 20th is another glassy morning with 5.2 ft southwest swell, clean and inviting. Classic weekday session if you can sneak out.
Tuesday the 21st morning is special. We’ve got 5.2 ft swell from the southwest, but the period jumps to 14 seconds – that’s long-period groundswell with proper push. Energy is 963. Glassy wind. The waves will be lined up nicely, but remember, long period swells like this can sometimes straighten out at beach breaks; at Onrus, a reef setup, this is where it shines. The afternoon gets bigger at 7.2 ft but the wind turns cross-onshore, so it loses some polish.
Now, Wednesday the 22nd – things get serious. Morning brings 9.8 ft swell from the west-southwest with a 14-second period. The combined energy is huge at 5650. Offshore wind of 20 km/h means it’s clean, but this is expert territory. Only experienced surfers should even think about it. The afternoon is similar, 11.5 ft with 30 km/h cross-offshore wind. Too big for most.
Thursday the 23rd morning drops back to a manageable 5.9 ft from the south-southwest, offshore wind, and energy still high at 1680. This is a good window for strong intermediates. Thursday afternoon sees a 5.9 ft southwest swell with a massive 18-second period – very long period groundswell – and clean cross-offshore wind. The energy is 3584. This could be epic, but that long period means it might be a bit walled up and better for a point or reef like Onrus.
Friday the 24th – morning is a monster: 13.1 ft southwest swell, 16-second period, glassy wind, and energy off the charts at 7783. This is a proper big-wave day, only for the brave. The afternoon is similar at 11.5 ft but with onshore wind, so conditions will be messy.
From Saturday the 25th through the 26th, it’s pretty rough. Saturday afternoon has 30 km/h onshore wind, Sunday has fresh cross-onshore winds all day. The swell is still big, but the quality is poor. This stretch is more for kites than paddles.
Monday the 27th morning brings hope: 6.2 ft from the south-southeast, clean with a light offshore wind, energy at 1599. This is a solid session for experienced surfers. The afternoon, however, jumps to 9.8 ft and goes onshore again.
Tuesday the 28th drops right down to 3.3 ft in the morning, though with a long 13-second period. Glassy afternoon with 2.6 ft. Small, but clean and workable on a longboard.
Wednesday the 29th is better: 3.6 ft to 4.3 ft southwest swell, clean winds, glassy in the afternoon. Small but fun.
Thursday the 30th is similar, with 3.9 ft to 4.3 ft, clean conditions. Nice for a cruise.
Friday the 31st morning brings a 5.6 ft south swell, glassy, with good energy. A solid way to end the month. The afternoon goes smaller.
Finally, into August, Saturday the 1st offers 4.3 ft to 4.6 ft southwest swell, glassy in the afternoon, with a 14-second period. The energy is 1368, and it’s clean – a nice mellow session to start the month.
Overall, the standout window is Tuesday the 21st morning with that long-period groundswell and glassy conditions. If you’re an experienced surfer, Thursday the 23rd afternoon with the 18-second swell is a real gem, but keep in mind those long gaps between sets. The first weekend (17th-19th) is also a solid bet for clean, medium-size waves.
