Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Onrus.
We’ve got a mixed bag of a forecast ahead. The week kicks off with some clean conditions but the swell is a bit all over the place. There’s a real standout coming on the morning of Monday the 6th that I’m stoked about, but we also have to watch out for a period of big, messy, and blown-out surf in the middle of the run, followed by some huge but unsurfable waves right at the end.
The water temp at Onrus is sitting at 59°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no need to worry about a strange cold snap.
Let’s get into it.
The first real window to paddle out opens up on Friday the 3rd. The morning starts with a chunky 6ft swell from the WNW, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit bumpy and disorganised. Not the best shape, but it’s clean with a moderate offshore wind. By Friday afternoon, things get real interesting. The swell jumps to 7ft from the WNW with a slightly better 8-second period. The combined energy hits 1057 (moderate to strong), and the offshore wind stays light at 12 mph. This is proper, powerful surf for experienced surfers only – anything over 8ft is expert territory, and this is getting close. The break is a reef and it’s exposed, so it’ll handle this size. Just be aware it’s inconsistent here, so you might wait a while between sets, but when they come, they’ll be solid.
Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th ease off a bit to a more manageable 5ft from the W, with clean, gentle offshore winds on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. The energy drops down around 572 to 649 (moderate). It’s not as punchy as Friday, but it’s clean and much more user-friendly for intermediates.
Now for the true standout of the first week: Monday morning, the 6th of July. The swell is a solid 7ft from the WSW with a long 11-second period (groundswell). The combined energy is 1131 (strong). But the real magic is the wind: light offshore from the NW at 6 mph. This is going to be clean, lined-up, and powerful. This is a reef break, so that longer period is going to run down the line beautifully. Expect excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is easily the best session on offer in the first week.
The quality drops after that. Tuesday the 7th sees lighter swell but cross-onshore winds start to creep in, making it choppy. We then hit a rough patch from Wednesday the 8th through Saturday the 12th. On Wednesday the 8th, the swell is massive (10ft from SW with a 16-second period – very long period) but the wind is onshore and howling. The energy is astronomical at 4317 (very strong), but it’s poor surf – big, lumpy, and blown out. This pattern of big cross-onshore swell continues through to Saturday, with winds from the East making a mess of things. Honestly, from Wednesday the 8th until Sunday the 12th, it’s a write-off for a proper surf.
We get a little reprieve on Monday the 13th. The swell drops back to 4ft from the SSW with a 12-second period. The kicker? Glassy conditions – zero wind. The energy is a moderate 609, and for a reef break, that glassy surface and waist-to-chest high swell will be a dream for a longboard or a funboard. It’s clean as a whistle.
After that, the second week is a letdown. The swell fades hard on the 14th and 15th, dropping to 2ft to 3ft, with just small, weak waves. Then, from the afternoon of the 15th through the 17th, the swell absolutely detonates, with 10ft to 13ft swell from the WSW and SW, and strong offshore winds. But the data is very clear: it’s too big for this break. The energy is massive (over 4000), but the reef just won’t hold that size well, and it will be dangerous and unsurfable. A total pass for paddle surfing.
So, to wrap it up: Friday afternoon, the 3rd, is the big, powerful session for experts. Monday morning, the 6th, is the absolute standout – best conditions, solid swell, glassy offshore winds. If you miss those, the glassy morning on the 13th is your best bet for a clean but smaller wave. The rest is either too messy or too big.
Rusty.
