Table - best surf conditions forecast for Onrus over the next 16 days.

Alright, let’s get into it. It’s Rusty here lookin’ at what’s on the cards.

So the forecast starts on Friday the 10th of July, and right from the get-go we’ve got swell running, but conditions are pretty grim. For Onrus, a reef break that faces the SW, we’re looking at a solid 8ft SSW swell with a period of 13 seconds for Friday morning, but it’s coming in with a cross-on E wind at 12 mph, making things choppy. Combined swell energy is high at (2230). The water temp is running about average for this time of year, nothing unusual. Honestly, it’s a bit of a messy start and the scores are low for Friday and Saturday – tough going for paddle surfing.

Saturday the 11th stays similar: 7ft SSW swell, but still cross-on from the east, and the wind bumps up a notch to 15-19 mph, making for lumpy conditions. Not the day to write home about.

We get a slow drop off through Sunday and Monday, with the swell easing from 5ft down to 4ft, but the wind stays up from the east or southeast, keeping things choppy and poor for surf. The energy drops from (702) down to (296). Nothing doing.

Tuesday the 14th of July sees a real shift. The swell drops right back to 2ft to 2ft, small, but the wind turns light offshore from the WNW, and late in the day we even get glassy conditions. The energy is weak at (164-183) but the cleanliness is a big positive. Surfable but tiny.

Now on Wednesday the 15th of July, we get a standout window. Morning brings a clean, 3ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell, best for a reef break like this. Wind is light cross-off from the WNW. Energy moderate at (605). Then Wednesday afternoon gets even better: the swell jumps to 5ft from the SW, period 15 seconds, with glassy to light offshore conditions. Energy climbs to (1553). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The long period will really wrap around this reef, giving proper shaped waves. This is the pick of the run so far.

Thursday the 16th of July holds on with a solid 8ft SW swell in the morning, though cross-shore wind, but by afternoon we go glassy with a 7ft SW swell – again excellent for those who know the break. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, so keep that in mind.

Friday the 17th early is still OK with clean 5ft waves, but the arvo turns onshore and messy again.

Then it gets wild. Saturday the 18th sees a big pulse: 13ft WSW swell by arvo with howling east winds at 22 mph. Very strong energy (5242) but totally blown out, choppy, and messy – that’s more of a kitesurfing situation than a paddle session, especially as a beach-and-reef setup.

Sunday the 19th keeps serious size with 10ft SW swell and glassy conditions in the afternoon, and offshore wind in the morning, but honestly the forecast says it’s too big for this break, even for experts. Energy is huge (2624-2110). Only the bravest would even look at it.

Monday the 20th settles back to a more manageable 6ft SW swell with offshore wind in the morning – clean and surfable, good for intermediate to advanced.

The rest of the run into the second week (21st to 25th July) has some small windows of clean surf with offshore or cross-off winds, but the swell is mostly small (2ft to 4ft) until it goes huge again. On the 22nd we get moderate offshore winds and clean 4ft SW swell – fun if you’re not greedy. But on the 23rd, Thursday, a massive 15ft W swell at 13 seconds rolls in, energy through the roof (10039). Too big. Then on the 24th, it gets even bigger with a 23ft to 25ft WSW swell – no good for surfing here, this is seriously heavy.

The standout by far is Wednesday 15th July afternoon at Onrus: 5ft SW swell with a 15-second period, glassy to light offshore wind. That’s the one to circle. Thursday 16th afternoon is a close second with 7ft SW and glassy conditions. For the second week, the 22nd offers a small but clean window with moderate offshore winds, but it’s nothing compared to the first week’s gems.

Stay sharp out there.

Rusty.
