Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the menu for the Onrus region over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of groundswell arriving, but the wind is going to be the main character in this story. The early part of the week is where the magic happens, with some clean, glassy conditions that will have you frothing.
Kicking things off on Monday the 6th of July, the morning looks a little messy with a light cross breeze, but it’s the afternoon that’s the real standout. We’re talking glassy conditions at Onrus (reef) with a clean 7ft swell from the WSW. The swell period is a long 11 seconds, so there’s proper energy behind it. Combined wave energy is in the moderate range (999) but it’s building. Water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about normal for this time of year, so nothing freaky there.
Tuesday the 7th is going to be a ripper. Morning sees a clean 7ft SW swell with a 12-second period, and the wind is light cross-offshore. That’s a recipe for some lined-up waves. The afternoon gets even better – glassy again, with the same 7ft SW swell but the period stretching out to 13 seconds, pushing the combined energy up to 1499. This is a proper groundswell, so it’ll be punchy and well-shaped at the reef. For experienced surfers, this is the pick of the week.
Wednesday the 8th morning holds on with a 7ft SW swell and 13-second period, but the wind swings to a cross-off from the WNW at 15 km/h. It’s still clean, and the energy is kicking up to 2027. However, the afternoon goes south quickly with a cross-on breeze and light rain, making things choppy and marginal.
From Thursday the 9th through to Sunday the 12th, it’s a write-off. Onshore winds from the ESE and E are going to trash the swell. The waves will be 8ft and bigger, but it’s choppy, onshore, and just plain messy. This is a gap of about 4 days where you’re better off doing something else. The combined energy is high, but surf quality is zero.
We get a nice little window again on Monday the 13th of July. The morning brings a 5ft SSW swell with a 12-second period and clean offshore winds from the NW. It’s a smaller wave, but the quality is good. The afternoon holds with a 4ft SSW swell and cross-off wind, so it’s still clean. Energy is dropping (629), but the shape will be there.
Tuesday the 14th is for the die-hards with a clean, offshore wind blowing from the NW at 20-25 km/h. The swell drops to 3ft, so it’s small, but it’s clean and rideable.
After that, we get another small gap, then a pulse of bigger swell arrives on Thursday the 16th of July. The 7ft SW swell returns, but the wind is onshore or cross-on, making it a marginal call. The 17th of July, Friday, looks a bit better with a cross-off wind from the WNW keeping the 7ft SW swell clean, but it’s not a top-tier standout.
The rest of the second week is a mixed bag of onshore slop and small clean days. The best of the later period is the morning of Monday the 20th of July, with a 4ft WSW swell and clean offshore winds from the NW. It’s not a huge swell, but it’ll be clean. Then Tuesday the 21st of July is another glassy surprise: 4ft WSW swell, glassy conditions, and a 12-second period. That’s worth a paddle.
So, overall: the first three days are your best bet. The standouts are Tuesday 7th July afternoon and Wednesday 8th July morning – that’s where the combination of solid SW groundswell, good period, and light to clean winds will give you the best waves. The crowd situation at Onrus is “sometimes,” so you might have a few mates out, but it won’t be a circus. After that, pick your moments in the second week for the cleaner, smaller days.
Rusty.
