The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin' for Onrus over the next couple of weeks.
The first solid chance to get wet doesn't show up until Tuesday morning the 18th of August. Onrus is a reef break, and it's inconsistent, so it’s not the kind of spot that’s always pumping. The water’s hanging around 58°F which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
Tuesday morning the 18th sees a 8ft SW swell, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The wind is light and offshore from the SSE, so it’ll be clean, but the wave comment suggests it’s borderline. The combined energy reading is a strong 2725, so there’s plenty of power in the water. The afternoon cleans up to a bigger 10ft SW swell with light SE onshore wind, but for a spot like Onrus, 10ft is getting too thick for comfort unless you’re an expert. The water’s still chilly.
Wednesday the 19th drops back to a 8ft SW swell in the morning with a cross-shore wind, nothing special. The afternoon, though, is a standout. A 8ft SW swell, light WSW cross-offshore wind, and the call is excellent for experienced surfers. The energy is a solid 1451, and it’ll be clean. This is the real pick of the first week.
Thursday the 20th gets a bit too big again with a 10ft SW swell in the morning, and the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not ideal. The afternoon is a 8ft SW swell with the same cross-onshore issue. The next few days, Friday the 21st through the weekend, are mostly blown out or too big, with onshore winds and big swell. Saturday the 22nd has a fresh 35 km/h offshore wind from the WNW, but the swell is 7ft with a short, weak period of 7 seconds. That’s more of a wind swell, and the energy is only 626. It’s not worth the hassle.
Now, Monday the 24th of August is a real gem. Morning brings a 5ft WSW swell with glassy conditions, light SE wind. The energy is 851, and the call is for very good surf. That’s a morning to get out of bed for. The afternoon is smaller at 4ft, so make the most of the morning.
The following week gets a bit messy. Tuesday the 25th has a 8ft SW swell but with onshore winds and the call is poor. Wednesday the 26th has a 5ft WSW swell in the morning, nothing special, but Wednesday afternoon sees a 5ft WSW swell with glassy conditions again. That’s another clean, fun session for the late afternoon.
The end of the run is where it gets interesting but uncertain. Sunday the 30th of August has a morning call with a 8ft SW swell, a very long period of 19 seconds, and light NNW cross-offshore winds. The combined energy is a massive 4557. The call is excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a monster groundswell, and on a reef, it’ll be lined up and powerful. But with that period, it’s for experts only. The afternoon stays big at 10ft SW.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September keep the big swell alive with strong offshore winds, but the swell sizes are over 8ft and 10ft, so it’s still expert territory. The energy readings are huge (up to 5287 on the 2nd of September). The best bets in the second week are the glassy sessions on Wednesday the 26th afternoon and the really promising, but massive, Sunday the 30th morning. If you’re a solid surfer, the 30th is the one to circle, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the charts.
Best on offer: Wednesday afternoon the 19th for the clean, excellent conditions, and the glassy Monday morning the 24th for a fun, manageable size. For the big dogs, Sunday morning the 30th is a potential bomb.
Rusty.
