The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the Ogunquit Rivermouth stretch.
Right now, we’re looking at a pretty flat run. There’s a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. From Friday the 7th through to Sunday the 16th of August, it’s a real dud. The swell is tiny, barely a ripple, and the energy numbers are low – we’re talking single digits and low teens for the combined energy of all swells directed here. For a spot that’s a river mouth, we need a bit of push to get things going, and it’s just not there.
There is a little bit of hope, but it’s a long way off. On Monday the 17th of August, we finally see a pulse. The morning looks the best of the whole 16-day window. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits a moderate 222, with a 5 ft swell from the SE. That’s a solid, chest to head high kind of day for the bigger sets. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s a windswell, not a long-period groundswell. The wind is offshore from the NW at 12 mph, which is a major positive. That offshore flow will clean up the river mouth nicely, making for some punchy, lined-up waves. The water temperature is 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 1.8 degrees cooler, so you’ll want a good suit.
After that Monday morning, the surf drops off again quickly. By Monday afternoon, the swell is back down to 3.6 ft, and the energy drops to 94. The rest of the week into the 22nd looks like more small, weak surf with inconsistent energy.
So, the standout here is the Monday morning of the 17th. It’s the only real window where the numbers line up. The Rivermouth can be a fun wave when it gets this SE swell and offshore wind, but don’t expect it to last. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but this is a brief spike. For the rest of the 16 days, you’re better off doing something else. The river mouth setup is exposed to the swell, but with the short period, it’ll be a bit sectiony. Still, clean 5 ft with offshore wind is a damn sight better than what we’ve got for the previous week and a half.
