The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the Mackay region over the next couple of weeks.

Well, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch for surfers. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty bleak, and there's no real standout session to get excited about. We’ve got a long run of days with nothing worth paddling out for, from now all the way through to the end of the period. The only spot we’ve got intel on is North Wall Mackay Harbour Beach, and even that’s a struggle.

The swell is tiny, mostly hanging around 0.7 ft to 3 ft, and the wind is a real problem. For most of this run, we’re looking at onshore or cross-onshore breezes, often howling along at 15 to 25 mph, which is gonna turn any little bump into a mess. The combined swell energy is weak, generally under 100, and often in the low double digits – nothing that’s going to get your heart racing.

There are a couple of brief moments where the wind does go light or glassy, like on the morning of Wednesday the 12th of August with a NNW breeze at just 3 mph. But the swell is only 0.7 ft from the ENE with a period of 8 seconds – that’s barely a ripple. Then again on the morning of Monday the 24th of August, we get a glassy NNW wind again, but again it’s on a tiny 2 ft E swell with a period of just 4 seconds.

The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Honestly, for this entire 16-day stretch, there’s nothing that qualifies as a “good” surf option. The break is a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, and it’s fairly exposed to the SE swell, but the conditions just aren't cooperating. The onshore wind and lack of size mean this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

Keep the board in the car, check the forecast again later, and don’t get your hopes up. This is one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for the area when the winds don’t line up.

Rusty.
