The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this forecast for Noosa’s Alexandria Bay is a tough one. We’re looking at a real flat spell for the next 16 days, and the models are showing a whole lot of nothing worth getting excited about. There’s a gap of poor conditions right through the first week, with only a couple of mornings offering tiny, ordinary waves. The water’s a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 68°, about 2° below average, so you’ll want a thicker spring suit.
The only real standout window is Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We’ve got a glassy morning with 4ft of swell from the east, and the combined energy is weak at 146. The wind is dead calm, glassy, making for clean conditions. It’s a small paddle, but for a morning session with a mate, it’s about as good as it gets in this run. The swell direction is a touch east of the optimum south, but the clean conditions make up for it.
After that, we hit a proper lull. From the 23rd right through to the 29th, the swell drops to nothing, under 3ft, with poor winds and cross-onshore chop. The 29th has a tiny 1ft south-southeast groundswell with offshore wind, but it’s barely a ripple.
Then on the 30th of August, we see a spike in the models – 7ft of short-period, sloppy swell from the southeast. That’s cross-onshore, choppy, and poor quality. It’s a messy, blown-out setup that’s more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers. The energy is moderate at 391, but the wind and period are all wrong.
Further out, the 2nd of September brings another pulse, 5ft from the southeast with a long 11-second period, but again cross-onshore and choppy. A bit of energy there (543), but the quality is poor.
So, the call is simple: if you’re desperate, hit Saturday morning the 22nd for that glassy, clean little window. Otherwise, this is a blank run that’s pretty normal for the area at this time of year. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
