The Lowdown

Hey, Rusty here. Look, I've been staring at the charts for the Noosa region, specifically Alexandria Bay, and I've got to be straight with you—the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and ugly for a paddle. It’s a real quiet spell, so don't be rushing to grab your board just yet.

Let's start with this Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. You've got a small, weak 3ft easterly swell rolling in, but it's only 7 seconds apart—short period, no grunt. The wind is light cross-off from the SSW at 3 mph, which is actually a nice clean vibe, and the combined energy is a paltry 114 (weak energy). It's surfable but very ordinary, and the water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about. The afternoon turns into a mess with a 9 mph cross-shore breeze, so forget it.

Sunday the 23rd is a write-off. We're looking at a tiny 0.3ft swell in the morning. That's not even a ripple. Afternoon picks up to a pathetic 3ft, but it's cross-onshore and choppy. No good.

From Monday the 24th right through to Saturday the 29th of August, it's a long, grim stretch. We've got onshore winds, rain, and waves that barely reach 3ft to 4ft, with energy readings stuck in the low hundreds or even single digits. The swell direction is mostly east, which isn't ideal for the exposed S-facing breaks at Alexandria Bay. The 30th of August brings a bit more size—6ft by the afternoon—but it's from the ESE with a short 6-second period and a moderate cross-onshore wind at 12 mph. The combined energy jumps to 322 (moderate), but the quality is poor, and it’s going to be choppy mess.

The start of September isn't much better. The 31st of August and 1st of September have some size, up to 6ft, but the wind is howling onshore from the ENE at 9-15 mph, and the energy is moderate at best (339-427). Rain mixed in too. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-friendly one. On the 2nd of September, the southerly wind picks up to 22 mph, making it lumpy and horrible.

Interestingly, on Thursday the 3rd of September morning, the swell drops right off to 1ft, so that's another no-go. The afternoon comes back with a 6ft easterly swell, but it's onshore and messy.

The only faint glimmer in this entire 16-day window is on Friday the 4th of September. Early morning, we've got a 4ft easterly swell with a 9-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the NNW at 12 mph. The combined energy is 215 (moderate), and the wave comment says "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions." It's still not a standout, but it's the best we've got. The afternoon goes to crap with a northerly cross-shore. Saturday the 5th has a tiny 0.7ft swell with offshore wind, but it's too small to ride.

So, basically, there are no true standouts here. The whole 16-day run is a gap of poor conditions. The first recommendation isn't until that very ordinary Saturday morning the 22nd, and after that it's a string of bad days. The only break to talk about is Alexandria Bay, and it's just not happening. For this part of the world, this kind of blank run is a bit more normal when the easterly swell train doesn't line up with the right winds. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because things can change, but right now, I'd save your energy.

Rusty.
