The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve been staring at the charts for Noosa – Alexandria Bay, and if you’re hanging out for a wave, you’re going to be doing a lot of waiting. This stretch is mostly a write-off for the next couple of weeks. There’s a big gap of nothing worth paddling out for right up until the very end of the period.
The water temp is sitting at 68°F, which is about a couple of degrees cooler than what we usually get this time of year. Not a shocker, but you’ll still want a spring suit.
The first sniff of anything interesting doesn’t come until Monday the 31st of August. That morning, a clean, cross-off breeze from the southwest will be blowing. The swell will be a solid 6ft, coming out of the east, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy will be pumping at 303 – that’s moderate to strong energy. It’s a better option than everything else around it, but that short period means it’s gonna be a bit dumpy and fat, not a real wall to work with. It’s right at the edge of being too big for beginners, so if you’re new, give it a miss. The wind stays pretty clean through Tuesday morning the 1st of September as well, with a 6ft east swell and a moderate 16 mph cross-off breeze from the southwest. The wave energy gets up to 410, which is strong, but the forecast is only calling it marginal because the period is still just 8 seconds. It’s not the quality groundswell you’d hope for.
Honestly, if you can make it down for that Monday morning – say the 31st – that’s your only real standout. It’s not classic Noosa, but it’s the best you’re going to get in this run. The early part of the second week is all junk – choppy, cross-onshore, and messy. By the 4th and 5th of September, the swell has dropped to nothing. A big blank run for an area that usually has a few more pulses.
Stay patient. The ocean will turn it on again.
Rusty.
