The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about Noosa’s Alexandria Bay in feet and Fahrenheit.
The first week or so is a real bummer – a long stretch of flat or junk surf from the 23rd of August through the 30th. The swell is tiny, the energy is weak (like 8 to 59), and the wind is mostly cross or onshore, messing up any chance of clean waves. The water is about 68°, which is a bit cooler than usual for this time of year.
The morning of Wednesday the 28th of August offers a brief reprieve. The wind goes glassy from the southwest, and we get a 3ft east swell with a 7-second period. The energy is moderate at 134. It’s nothing special – surfable but ordinary – but it’s clean, and that’s something.
The real standout, and the only day I’d get excited about, is the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. Clear skies, a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW, and a clean 4ft east swell running at 10 seconds. The energy reaches 240 (moderate), and the forecast says good surf conditions. That’s your window. It’s consistent, exposed to the south, and crowds are only sometimes a problem, so you might snag a few clean ones.
After that, it drops off fast. The 2nd of September sees the swell shrink to 1ft and energy crash to 21. The rest of the first week of September is weak and messy, and the second week of the outlook is barely worth mentioning.
So, there’s one session to aim for: the 1st of September, morning. If you’re patient, it’ll pay off. Everything else is a waiting game.
Rusty.
