Alright, mate, let’s see what Noosa – Alexandria Bay is cookin’ for ya.
Honestly, the next 16 days look like a rough patch. There’s nothing worth paddling for until well into the second week. Most of the first week is just onshore junk, messy cross-chop, and tiny dribbles of energy. The water temp is 70°, which is about 1° cooler than usual for this time of year – pretty average.
The first time there’s a sniff of something surfable is Friday morning, July 3rd. A little 3ft swell out of the ESE, with a 10-second period. Combined energy is weak (116). The wind is light and cross-off from the NW, so it’d be clean and glassy, but that swell is just too small to get pumped about. The afternoon turns to junk.
The rest of that first week and into the second is a grind of onshore winds (S, SSE, SE) blowing at 12 to 19 mph, with choppy, lumpy conditions. Swell bumps up to 6ft and 8ft on Sunday and Monday, but it’s all short-period windswell (6-8 seconds) and cross-onshore. The energy numbers go up (275 to 862), but it’s ugly. That size, with that wind, is just a mess.
We finally see a little more promise on Wednesday morning, July 8th. Swell hits 7ft from the SE, period jumps to 12 seconds – that’s groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a hefty 1304. The catch: it’s cross-shore wind from the S at 16 mph, so there’s a lumpy cross-chop. Still not a standout. Thursday morning, July 9th, is similar: 6ft SE swell, 10-second period, cross-shore wind – energy at 1019, but again, the quality isn’t there.
After that, it all fades away. From Friday, July 10th, onwards we’re looking at tiny waves, dropping below 3ft, with periods all over the place. By the time we get to the 15th and 16th, it’s nearly flat – 0.3ft to 1ft, glassy but useless.
The only real highlight in the entire run is the last few days, but it’s for the wrong reasons. On Friday, July 17th, the swell is only 1.0ft, but the period is 14 seconds, and the wind goes offshore from the WSW at 12 mph. It’ll be clean, but you’d need a log and a prayer. Saturday, July 18th has similar tiny groundswell and strong cross-off winds, but it’s just not enough water.
Honestly, there’s not one single standout session here. Everything that has size has bad wind, and when the wind is good, the swell is non-existent. If you’re a kiter or a windsurfer, that Sunday/Monday with the 6ft to 8ft onshore junk might be your playground, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a tough outlook.
Keep an eye on it, though – the longer-period swells at the end of the run show there’s some energy out there. It won’t stay this poor forever, and forecasts can flip.
