The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at what we’ve got coming up for the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it is a quiet stretch of weather and the surf is tiny and messy for most of it. We’re looking at a long, flat spell that runs from today all the way through to the last day of July. That’s over a week of barely a ripple worth paddling for. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.7 to 2 ft and from the ESE or E, and the period is short – between 4 and 9 seconds – so there is no real power or shape to work with. Most days have cross-shore or cross-onshore winds that will keep the surface ragged rather than smooth. There are a few brief windows where the wind shifts lighter or more offshore, but the wave height is simply too small to make anything of it.
The only real standout, and I mean the only one, falls on Thursday the 30th of July. That morning at Melbourne Beach (Florida) the swell lifts just a touch to 3 ft from the S. The period is very short at 4 seconds, so it’ll be a bit soft and wobble, but the big win here is glassy conditions: zero wind. The water temp is around 85°F, which is about average for the time of year. The combined swell energy hits 55 (moderate), so there’s enough there to push a few small, crumbly waves through. It’s not going to be a world-class session, but compared to the rest of the forecast, this is the pick of the bunch. That tiny morning window is your best bet.
After that, we slip straight back into the same old pattern of knee-high dribble and onshore chop right through to the first of August. There are some glassy mornings around the 31st and 1st of August, but with wave heights sitting at 1 ft, you’d need a longboard and a lot of patience.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, the 30th of July morning is the only slot worth wetting a wetsuit. Otherwise, it’s a good time to clean your gear and wait for the next system.
