Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let's be real about what we're looking at for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a bit of a grim stretch ahead for Melbourne Beach. We've got a 16-day window, and the first recommendation doesn't kick in until Thursday the 9th of July, so there's a bit of a dead run before we even start. Even then, it's nothing to write home about.
The core problem is we're stuck with tiny, weak east-southeast windswell for the entire period. The wave energy is pathetically low, never even cracking three digits – we’re talking readings between 12 and 70 on the energy scale. That’s barely a ripple. The swell direction is coming from the ESE, which is fine for the break, but the size is miniscule.
Thursday morning, the 9th of July, is the first time we see anything described as "surfable," and that's a generous word for it. Swell is a paltry 2ft from the ESE with a short period of 9 seconds. It's light and cross-offshore, so it'll look clean, but you'll be fighting for scraps. The water temp is sitting at a warm 84°, which is a touch above average for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze waiting for a set.
From there, it's a long, flat slog. Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th have glassy mornings with tiny 1.5ft swell, but that's about the only positive. It’s textbook longboarding or beginner conditions, but even then, it’s weak.
We get a slight bump in size on Wednesday the 15th of July afternoon, with the swell hitting 3ft, but the period drops to a shocking 4 seconds. That’s not surf, that’s wind chop. It’ll be a mess.
The whole forecast is a repeating cycle of clean, tiny mornings getting ruined by onshore winds and storm threats in the afternoons. Consistency is a problem – the break is only "fairly consistent" at the best of times, and with this lack of energy, it's going to feel like a lake. This kind of blank run is unfortunately normal for the area when there's no proper groundswell.
If you’re desperate for a paddle, aim for a glassy morning. Otherwise, save your energy.
