The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the next couple of weeks.
It’s a slow start. We’ve got a few days of tiny, weak swell and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds, so don’t bother paddling out just yet. The water is sitting at 76°, which is running much warmer than usual for this time of year – a good 5° above the norm, so you’ll be in the water in boardies or a shorty.
Things start to change around Thursday, the 27th. The swell picks up, but it’s still marginal with questionable conditions. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (207) on Thursday morning, with a 4ft swell from the WNW, but the wind is a cross-off, so it’s clean. It’s still not a standout, though.
The real window opens up on Saturday, the 29th. That’s your best bet. Early morning at La Concha we’ve got a solid 7ft swell from the WNW, a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is glassy. The combined energy is up to 868, which is strong. That’s proper groundswell energy, and with glassy conditions, it’s going to be clean. It’s a reef break, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely. Heads up, though – at 7ft, this is getting into expert territory. It’s not for beginners. Also, this spot is inconsistent, and it gets crowded often, so if you’re heading out, get there early.
Sunday, the 30th also has a clean morning – 4ft from the NW, glassy, and with a 9-second period. The combined energy is 262, so it’s moderate. That’s a nice, less intimidating option for the stronger intermediate crew.
Then we get a bit of a lull again. The first week of September is mostly flat or small, with poor conditions. Don’t get your hopes up for much action until Monday, the 7th of September. That afternoon, the swell pumps up to 12ft from the WNW, with a combined energy of 1892 – that’s very strong. But the wind is onshore, so it’s going to be a messy, powerful beast. Only for the most experienced, and even then, it’s not going to be clean. The setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than a proper paddle session.
So, to sum it up: the standout is the morning of Saturday, the 29th of August – big, clean, and powerful. Sunday, the 30th morning is a solid second option. The rest of the period is mostly small, blown out, or flat.
Rusty.
