Table - best surf conditions forecast for La Concha over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab a coffee, mate. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a rough start. For the first fortnight, we're looking at a proper dry spell. La Concha is a reef setup, inconsistent at the best of times, and it's not doing us any favours. The water is sitting at 77° – that's much warmer than normal for this time of year, by about 9°, which is a proper anomaly. But the swell is tiny, the energy is weak (numbers like 85, 97, 69 – all under 100), and the comments are all "poor surf conditions." The best we get is a glassy morning on Friday the 10th and another on Tuesday the 14th, but with swell heights barely pushing 2ft or 2ft, it's just not enough to get excited about. There's a stretch from July 9th right through to the 22nd where there's nothing worth paddling out for.
The first real sign of life comes on Monday the 20th. The swell starts to build. By the afternoon we see 4ft from the WNW with a period of 7 seconds, and the energy jumps to 256 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it's still a bit lumpy, but there's a pulse coming. Wednesday the 22nd afternoon sees that swell hit 5ft from the NW with a period of 7 seconds, and the energy is now 263 – it's starting to get some push. Still, the wind is cross-onshore, so it's not clean.
Now, the standout. Thursday the 23rd of July. That morning is the best we've got in the whole outlook. The swell is 4ft from the NW, period of 8 seconds, and the energy is a solid 167 (moderate). But the magic is the wind: it's glassy. Dead flat. That reef at La Concha will be clean as a whistle. The comments finally say "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – and for here, that's a win. It's not going to be pumping, but for a break that's usually inconsistent, a glassy morning with a knee-to-waist high set is a rare treat. The waves will be a little short-period, but on a reef, it'll hold shape better than a beach. Be aware, crowds are often an issue here, so get in early.
The next day, Friday the 24th, the swell jumps to 6ft to 6ft from the NW, with energy hitting 439 and 467 (strong). That's a significant step up. But the period is still short at 8 seconds, and the wind is cross-onshore, with a moderate breeze on the afternoon. That much short-period swell with onshore wind is going to be messy and choppy. That's more of a kite surfing day than a paddle surfing day, to be honest. It's only for the experts.
So, the call: Forget the first two weeks. The only real window is Thursday the 23rd of July morning. Get on it. It's a glassy, small-wave reef session that's a rare gem for this spot.
