The Lowdown

Alright, I’ve been staring at the charts for St Jean de Luz – La Bougie, and I gotta be straight with you: it’s looking like a ghost town out there for the next couple of weeks. This is one of those stretches where the ocean just pulls the plug.

Let’s start with the water. Right now, on the 5th of August, La Bougie is sitting at 76° – that’s a solid five and a half degrees warmer than what we’d normally see this time of year. We’re talking bathwater, really unusual. But as nice as that sounds for a swim, the surf is a total no-show.

From Wednesday the 5th through to the end of the 16-day window on the 20th of August, the combined energy of all swells directed here stays at zero for almost the entire run. The only tiny flickers of life come on the morning of Sunday the 9th, where we get a 0.7 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 4 seconds and energy reading of just 2. That’s barely a ripple. Then again on the morning of Wednesday the 12th, a 1 ft swell from the WNW with a 6-second period and energy of 13. Still nothing you’d paddle out for.

Wind-wise, there are a couple of glassy mornings – Friday the 7th and Sunday the 9th, and again on Monday the 17th – but with zero to tiny swell, it’s a flat, pretty lake. A few days have cross-onshore wind, especially around the 13th to 16th, with WNW winds up to 12 mph, but that’s just choppy water with no wave to ride.

La Bougie is a reef break that’s inconsistent and rarely breaks, and this forecast confirms it. It’s very sheltered and needs a specific NW swell direction to work, but we’re getting nothing even close. There’s just no surf on offer here. Not a single day worth paddling out. For a spot that’s already a bit of a tease, this 16-day outlook is a total write-off.

Best advice? Put the board away, enjoy the warm water for a swim, and wait for the next system to roll in. Forecasts can change, but right now, it is dead.
