The Lowdown

Alright, crew, let's be real: the next couple weeks are looking bleak for a surf. It's a flat spell, and it's gonna test your patience.

Right now, the water's a balmy 76°, which is running over 5° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's a big deal—super unusual—and it makes the thought of a session all the more frustrating when there's nothing to ride.

We're looking at a real dry spell. From Wednesday the 5th through at least Saturday the 9th, there's just nothing on offer. A few tiny ripples might show on Sunday the 9th, maybe a 0.7ft blip from the WNW with a 4-second period, but that's barely a bump. The combined swell energy is a weak 1, so you're staring at a flat ocean. There's a glassy window on Friday morning, but with no swell, it doesn't matter.

The drought continues. We see a tiny pulse on Wednesday the 12th, with maybe 1ft from the NW at 5 seconds, and the energy ticks up to a still-puny 6. This is not rideable surf. The following days are a repeat of nothing. Light winds and flat seas, but the swell just never shows up.

The only faint glimmer of hope is way out there, on Thursday the 20th of August. The forecast shows a small 1ft NW swell with a 6-second period, and the combined energy climbs to a whopping 8. Still, that's not exactly something to write home about, and it's over a week away, so take it with a grain of salt. Conditions are predicted to be poor, and with northerly winds, it's not looking like a clean wave.

Honestly, there are no good surf options in this entire 16-day window. This is one of those blank runs that just happens. The spot, La Bougie, is a sheltered reef that's inconsistent at the best of times, and with no swell and a NW wind blowing, it's not breaking at all. If the wind stays as forecast, this might be a better stretch for a kite than a surfboard.

Keep the board in the car, but don't hold your breath. Forecasts can change, and this much flatness tends not to last forever.

Rusty, out.
