The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – this stretch ain’t firing like it should. The swell coming through Jardim Atlantico is mostly short-period windswell, and the wind is a constant battle. There are a few fleeting windows of clean glass, but they’re short-lived and the surf quality just isn’t there for the most part. We’ve got a long run of poor conditions from the start, with a real gap in quality surf. The first real chance of anything decent won’t arrive until Monday morning, July 20th, and even then, it’s touch and go.
Let’s look at the days. Starting Saturday, July 18th, it’s a write-off. Cloudy, cross-on SE wind at 9 mph, and a messy 5 ft easterly swell with a short 8-second period. The combined energy is weak (235), and the water is a warm 78 °F, which is about average for this time of year. Sunday, July 19th, is more of the same – rain showers and cross-on wind, with the swell bumping up to 5 ft but still poor.
The first real hope comes Monday morning, July 20th. The wind drops to glassy, calm conditions, and we’ve got a 4 ft E swell, still short period at 8 seconds. The wave energy is moderate (219). It’s a beginner-friendly size, but with that short period, the waves will be a bit soft and crumbly. Still, with glassy conditions, it’s the best the surf will be for a while. Monday afternoon the wind swings onshore, so get in early.
Tuesday morning, July 21st, is glassy again. The swell is 5 ft from the E, still 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate (297). A clean, user-friendly wave for the groms and longboarders. By afternoon the wind goes onshore again. Wednesday morning, July 22nd, repeats the same pattern – glassy morning, 5 ft E swell, moderate energy (304). This is the pick of the first week. The water is still that warm 78 °F.
After that, the forecast turns sour. From Thursday, July 23rd, through to Tuesday, July 29th, we’re stuck with poor surf and onshore or cross-onshore winds. The swell drops from 4 ft down to a tiny 2 ft, and the short period just kills any hope of a decent wave. The combined energy bottoms out at a weak 44 on the 30th. There’s a solid 8-day gap with no real recommendations.
We get a little flicker of hope on Thursday, July 30th afternoon, with a jump in swell to 4 ft, but it’s a short 6-second period and onshore wind. Not worth it. Friday, July 31st morning is glassy and the swell is 4 ft, but it’s still short-period windswell, and the comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The energy is low (165).
Then we get a potential standout. Saturday morning, August 1st. The wind goes light and cross-offshore from the NNW at 6 mph, switching to a clean offshore. The swell is 4 ft from the E, period 7 seconds, but the combined energy jumps to 291, and the wave comment says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the best on offer for the whole 16-day run. It’s clean, it’s shoulder-high, and the wind is right. Get out there early. Sunday, August 2nd, sees a bigger swell push in at 5 ft, then 6 ft in the afternoon, with a moderate-to-strong energy reading of 675, but the wind is cross-on and onshore, so it’ll be a mess. That’s a kite-surfing setup more than a paddler’s wave.
So, if you’re keen, pencil in Saturday morning, August 1st, for the best session. The near-term glassy mornings are okay for a longboard, but don’t expect any barrels.
Rusty.
