The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve had a proper look at the charts for Praia do Ypuã (Ipua). Let me tell you, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for any decent paddle surfing. There’s a massive gap of almost no worthwhile surf, with only a few fleeting moments that might wet your toes, but nothing that’s going to get the heart pumping.
The energy is mostly weak, with combined swell energy values often sitting below 200 – that’s a lot of fizzle for a solid surf session. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The few bright spots are tiny. On the morning of the 27th of July, you’ve got a clean 2ft of swell from the S with a 12-second period, but the combined energy is only 157. It’s surfable, but you’d be scratching for a ride. The afternoon of the 28th of July goes glassy with a 2ft S swell, same period, but again, it’s barely a ripple. The 29th of July morning is similar, glassy and 2ft, but it’s all just very ordinary. The 30th of July morning has a glassy 3ft E swell, but the period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit gutless.
The only time the swell gets a bit of oomph is on the 1st of August, with a 7ft NE swell, but the period is a shocking 6 seconds. That’s just wind-chop, not a groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 521, which is moderate, but with that short period and a cross-off wind, it’s going to be a messy, lumpy mess. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
The 4th of August brings a 7ft SE swell with a 10-second period, giving a combined energy of 978 – that’s the strongest energy in the whole run. The wind is a light cross-shore, so it could be marginally surfable, but for an intermediate break, that’s getting big (over 5ft) and might be a handful for beginners. It’s a standout, but only because everything else is so poor.
So, the only real standout if you’re desperate is the morning of the 4th of August. It’s a long way off, but if the winds hold, that 7ft SE swell (10s period) might offer the best, most powerful waves of the whole period. For the rest of it, don’t bother – the consistency is poor, and the conditions are mostly ordinary. Pray for a better forecast.
Rusty.
