The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the next two weeks at Honeymoon Island are a right-off if you're looking for proper surf. We’ve got a long blank stretch ahead.
Looking at the whole 16-day window, there is just nothing on the cards. The first entry kicks off Sunday afternoon the 19th of July, but straight away it's a mess: a weak 4ft southerly swell with a short, choppy 5-second period, and a fresh 19 mph cross-off wind from the SSE. The combined energy is a low 74 – weak. To make matters worse, the water temp is sitting at 89°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – that's a notable anomaly, so expect it to feel like a bath.
Monday the 20th offers a touch more size at 5ft from the SSW, but the period is still a poor 6 seconds and the wind swings to a nasty cross-shore at 22 mph, leaving the surface lumpy. That energy bumps up just a little into three digits (114-119), but it’s all poor quality. Tuesday the 21st drops back to 4ft, and the wind stays cross or cross-on with a fresh breeze – still no good.
From Wednesday the 22nd onward, things just dwindle. Swell heights keep falling – 3ft, then 2ft, then down to 1.0ft by the 26th. Periods are pitiful (4 to 7 seconds), and the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, with a moderate to fresh breeze. The energy numbers sink into single or low double digits. There’s a tiny pulse around the 30th and 31st of July, bringing 3ft waves from the west, but again, the period is short (5-6 seconds) and the wind is cross-on with a fresh breeze, making for lumpy, choppy conditions.
By the start of August, the 1st sees a slight bump to 5ft from the WSW, but again – poor period (5 seconds), fresh cross-on wind, and only a score of 117 in energy. The same story holds for the 2nd, and by the 3rd of August we’re back to tiny, weak 2ft slop. This break is a sandbar setup that rarely breaks, and for this run, it just isn’t happening. There are zero standout days. A blank run like this is not unusual for the area given the conditions. If you’ve got a kite, the cross-onshore winds might offer a bit of interest, but for a paddle surfer, it’s time to find another hobby for a while.
Rusty.
