The Lowdown
Alright, folks, it’s Rusty here. I’ve been staring at the charts for Honeymoon Island and I gotta tell you, it’s looking like a whole lot of nothing for a good long while. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but for most of it, you’d be better off leaving the board in the car.
Right from the get-go, Friday the 21st, the surf is just about non-existent. We’re talking knee-high slop at best, like 0.7ft of windswell with a super short 4-second period. The combined energy is weak, only reading 2. It’s just poor surf conditions. The water temp is sitting at 89°F, which is a huge 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s the first thing you’ll notice when you get in – it’s like bathwater out there.
The whole weekend and into next week doesn’t get any better. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are the same story – tiny, weak swells with no push. The energy is pitiful, 2 and 1 respectively. We get a little glassy moment early Monday morning, but with no swell at all. It’s flat. The pattern just keeps repeating: small, weak, and disorganized. A bit of a breeze here, a glassy dawn there, but nothing that will get your heart rate up. The combined wave energy values are all in the low single digits – basically, the ocean is taking a nap.
This dry spell stretches on for the better part of a week and a half. There’s a couple of days where it’s clean due to offshore or cross-offshore winds, but with the swell being zero or close to it, it’s pointless. It’s only towards the very end, on Tuesday the 1st of September, that we get a whisper of a wave – 0.3ft from the south with a 5-second period and a gentle offshore wind. But that’s not surf, that’s a ripple.
To be honest, the whole setup looks like it's going to be better for a spot of kite surfing than paddle surfing. With the lack of any decent swell and the afternoon breezes, there’s just nothing to ride. This is a spot that rarely breaks anyway, and it’s holding true to its name. A blank stretch like this is pretty normal for the area, so don't go getting too down about it. Forecasts change, so keep your eyes peeled, but for now, find something else to do. This is Rusty, signing off.
