The Lowdown
Alright, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for our little slice of coast.
To be real with you, this 16-day window is a tough one. For the best part of two weeks, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. The swell stays tiny – barely a ripple most days – and with onshore winds and storms in the mix, it’s not shaping up for anything rideable. Once we get past the first week, there’s a glimmer of something, but it’s small and far away.
Let’s break it down.
From Thursday, August 20th, right through to Sunday, August 30th, it’s a flat spell. There’s a long gap of about 10 days where I wouldn't bother paddling out. The odd bump shows up, but it’s all short-period, weak windswell – period of just 4 to 5 seconds – and the wind is all wrong. Mostly cross-onshore from the WNW, sometimes blowing 12 mph, making it choppy and messy. You’re looking at swell heights of barely 0.7 ft to 2 ft, with combined energies in the single digits (1 to 15), so there’s just no power.
The only spot we’ve got to talk about is Honeymoon Island, a sandbar that rarely breaks. That right there tells you the bar needs a proper pulse to work, and this ain’t it. The water temp is sitting at 89°, which is a full 4° warmer than normal – that's pretty toasty and notable.
Now, there’s a quiet shift come Monday, August 31st, and into early September. By Thursday, September 4th, we finally see some tiny, cleaner possible waves. The early morning on Friday the 4th is the best the outlook gets: a 1 ft S swell, period of 4 seconds, but paired with a gentle offshore from the East at 9 mph. That offshore wind means clean faces, and the combined energy climbs a bit to 8. It’s still knee-high, but if you are desperate, that’s your window.
Bottom line: this is a serious dry spell. There’s no standout. Honeymoon Island is inconsistent and rarely breaks anyway, so this blank run is pretty normal for the area. As always, forecasts can change, but for now, wax the board for a week or two and wait.
Rusty.
