The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a grim outlook for 13th Street. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions with no real standouts to get excited about.
The water temperature is sitting at 84°, which is just about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few days, starting Wednesday the 5th of August, are tiny. We’re talking 0.4ft to 0.5ft of ESE swell with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak, around 19, and it’s just poor surf. It doesn’t get any better through Thursday or Friday. By Friday the 7th, we see a bump to 1.0ft and even 1ft by the afternoon, with the combined energy hitting 306, which is moderate. But the wind is onshore or cross-onshore from the ESE, making it choppy and messy. The wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions.”
The weekend and the following week are more of the same. The swell stays small, mostly under 1.0ft, with short periods and a persistent onshore or cross-onshore wind component. The energy is low, often in the double digits, and the surf is consistently rated as poor. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Monday the 18th of August where the wind goes light and cross-offshore from the WNW, with a 0.4ft, 9-second period ESE swell. The combined energy is 55, and the comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s about as close as we get to a recommendation, and it’s still a weak option.
The truth is, there’s nothing here worth paddling out for. The swell is too small, the wind is almost always wrong, and the quality is terrible. For a spot that’s “very consistent” and “fairly exposed,” this is a proper flat spell. For kite surfers, the onshore winds and small, choppy waves might look more interesting than for paddle surfing. But for a surfer? Save your energy.
This is a flat run, and it’s going to stay that way. Check back in a week or two – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
