The Lowdown

Hey folks, Rusty here, and I’ve got to level with you. We’re staring down a long, flat spell along this coast. The whole 16-day forecast, from August 14th through the 29th, is a total bust—16 straight days of poor surf conditions. Don’t get your hopes up for a single ride.

The only spot in the charts is Port Austin. It’s an inconsistent, exposed break that needs a decent NW swell, but there’s nothing on the way. Water temp is sitting at 74°, a touch warmer than average for this time of year, but that doesn’t matter with no waves.

Looking at the specifics, Friday morning August 14th kicks off with zero wave energy (combined energy 0) and a 12 mph north wind blowing straight onshore—ugly. The only blip on the radar is a tiny 1ft swell from the NW with a super short 2-second period and a combined energy of just 1 on Sunday afternoon the 16th, but it’s got a light cross-onshore breeze that’ll leave it choppy and weak. We do see some clean, offshore wind days, like Tuesday morning August 18th with a 12 mph SW breeze, or Sunday morning August 23rd with a 9 mph SSW offshore—but without any swell, a glassy ocean is just a flat lake.

With this little wave energy and a beach-style setup, it’s more interesting for kiteboarding than paddle surfing, but even the wind isn’t strong enough to get excited about.

The energy readings are all in the weak range. There are no standouts, no hidden gems. The near-term forecast is rock-solid flat, and the long range looks just as bad. This is just one of those normal dry runs for the area. Forecasts can always shift, but for now, keep the wax at home.

Rusty.
