The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – looking at the next 16 days for our local reef, it’s a tough watch. The data we’ve got is pretty grim.
Overall, we’re staring down a long, quiet stretch. There’s a big gap of nothing worthwhile right through the first few days. From Thursday the 16th right through to Sunday the 19th, it’s a total write-off. The swell is tiny, the conditions are poor, and there’s just no energy to work with. You’d be better off cleaning the wax off your board than getting wet.
Hobson County Park is the only break on the map, and it’s an advanced-level reef that’s pretty consistent. But with the wave heights barely reaching 3 ft and the swell direction mostly from the SSW or W, it’s not doing this spot any favours. The optimum swell is from the WNW, so everything coming in is off-angle. The combined swell energy is mostly in the low to moderate range, hitting about 157 (moderate energy) on Thursday morning but then dropping into the 50s and low 100s over the weekend. Not enough grunt for a reef break.
The water is sitting at 66°F and a big 4°F warmer than average for this time of year. That’s notable – feels like a warm bath, but it’s not making the surf any better.
Even when the swell tries to bump up a little, it’s still no good. On Monday the 20th, we see a bump to 3 ft from the SSW with combined energy of 335 (moderate to strong), but the wind is light cross-onshore. The data says the surf is only “marginal” at best. That pattern of small, onshore, or cross-onshore wind keeps repeating. You’ll see a few pulses of energy in the second week – like Saturday the 25th with 3 ft and 462 energy, or Sunday the 26th with 2 ft and 475 energy – but the wind is always blowing straight onshore from the WSW. That kills any chance of a clean wave on this reef.
The odd long-period swell pops up, like a 26-second period on the 23rd, but with the height at a pathetic 0.7 ft and energy at just 104 (weak), it’s a nothing burger. The period that long at a beach-break-style reef would make it break too straight anyway.
Honestly, for the entire 16-day window, there isn’t a single standout session. The wind is almost always onshore, the swell is small, and the direction is wrong. Some of those pulses later in the month, like the 475 energy on the 26th, show there’s some deeper water energy moving through, but it’s being completely wasted by the conditions.
For a spot like this, a blank run like this isn’t totally abnormal, but it still stings. The forecasts can always change, but right now, I’d say save your energy.
Stay patient, and check back with me.
Rusty.
