The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks at Hobson County Park.
To be honest, the whole 16-day outlook is pretty flat. Most of the time the surf is poor, with tiny waves and weak energy. There are a few windows with clean offshore wind, but the swell is just too small to get any real ride going.
The first chance comes Monday the 17th of August, but it’s no good. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th have small 2 to 2ft SSW swells with clean light winds, but the energy is only moderate. It’s a morning glass-off for a longboard, but don’t expect much.
Thursday the 20th through Monday the 25th of August is all tiny, with waves around 1 to 2ft. Wind is often offshore, which keeps the surface smooth, but there’s just no power. On the 25th, a 3ft W swell shows up but with a short period, so it won’t have any push.
The end of the month shows a little more life. Saturday the 29th of August morning has a 3ft SSW swell with a very long 18-second period, and energy jumps up strong. The wind is light and cross-onshore, which is a bummer because it messes the face. It’s a reef break, so the long period will hold it up, but it won’t be perfect.
Sunday the 30th of August keeps the 3ft SSW groundswell with light offshore wind in the afternoon, and strong energy. The long period means long waits between sets, and it’s for experienced surfers only. Crowds are possible.
Water temp is 70°F, which is about 6°F above normal. Very unusual for this time of year – it feels like warm summer water, but the waves just aren’t cooperating.
Honestly, there is no true standout in this forecast. The biggest energy lands on the 29th and 30th of August, but the wind keeps it from being a home run. If you’re a patient expert looking for long-period reef waves, you could get a few. For everyone else, I’d find something else to do.
Rusty.
