The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Hobson County Park (reef break). Straight up, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a run of small, weak swells and the wave quality is rated as poor right through. The water’s sitting at 69°F right now, which is a huge 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year—very unusual.
Saturday the 22nd of August kicks off with a tiny 1ft swell from the SSW, period 13 seconds, but the combined energy is only 53 (weak). The wind is light offshore from the WSW, so conditions are clean, but there’s just not enough push. By the afternoon, it’s a 2ft W swell with moderate energy (124), but still poor surf. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are much the same—small 1ft to 1ft SSW swells, light offshore winds, but the wave quality doesn’t improve. Energy stays weak to moderate at best.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th see a bit more period in the SSW swell (16 to 18 seconds), with moderate energy up to 146 on Wednesday afternoon, but the swell height stays at 1ft. The wind remains light offshore, so it’s clean, but the waves are just too small to get excited about. Thursday the 27th is the weakest of the lot—a 2ft W swell with only 45 energy in the morning, dropping to 35 in the afternoon. The wind goes near calm, but the swell is tiny.
Friday the 28th has a 1ft SSW swell with a very long 19-second period and moderate energy (234), but the wind turns cross-onshore, creating small wind ripples. Still poor surf. Saturday the 29th of August is the first day that gets a “marginal” call. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the SSW with a 17-second period and strong energy (352). The wind is light offshore, so it’ll be clean, but at this reef break, a long-period swell like that can sometimes run a bit too straight. It’s still very small, so don’t expect much. After that, Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st are back to poor surf with small SSW swells.
Tuesday the 1st of September has a 2ft W swell with 9-second period and moderate energy (192), but the wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not clean. Wednesday the 2nd of September shows a 3ft WNW swell with 8-second period and moderate energy (200), but short period like that means weak, chopped-up waves. The wind is light offshore, so it’ll be clean but weak.
Thursday the 3rd of September has a 1ft SSW swell with a very long 20-second period and strong energy (323). Light offshore wind, clean, but again very small. The standout moment, if you can call it that, is Friday the 4th of September. The swell hits 3ft from the SSW with a 19-second period and very strong energy (757) in the afternoon. The wind is light onshore, so it’s not glassy, and the wave quality is only marginal. For a reef break, that long period could be a bit too straight, but it’s the biggest energy spike in the whole run. Still, it’s not for beginners—it’s an advanced break and the swell is small but the energy is high.
Saturday the 5th of September sees a 3ft SSW swell with 18-second period and strong energy (512), but it’s cloudy and the wind is light offshore in the morning, turning to a gentle breeze in the afternoon. Still poor surf quality. Sunday the 6th of September winds down with a 2ft SSW swell dropping to 1ft, weak energy (96) in the afternoon.
Overall, there’s no real standout session here. The best bet is Friday the 4th of September with that 3ft SSW swell and very strong energy, but don’t expect perfection. The rest of the run is mostly tiny, weak, or poor quality. Keep an eye on the forecasts—things can change.
Rusty.
