The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for us.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: this stretch is a tough one. We’re lookin’ at a solid run of poor surf conditions all through the next two weeks. It’s a flat spell, and there’s no real standout to get excited about. The first 16 days barely offer a whisper of something to paddle for, and that’s a long gap to sit on the sand.
Things kick off on Sunday morning, 23 August. Hobson County Park is barely showin’ any life – you’re lookin’ at a tiny 1.0ft of swell from the SSW, with a long period of 13 seconds. That’s a groundswell, sure, but the wave energy is weak (59). The water is a balmy 70°, and that’s way warmer than normal for the time of year, with a 6° anomaly. Wind’s from the WSW at 6 mph, blowin’ directly onshore, so it’s messy. It’s an advanced reef break, but honestly, there’s nothing here for anyone.
Monday morning, 24 August, stays the same game – 1ft SSW groundswell, 14-second period, still onshore wind. The energy picks up a bit to moderate (132), but the conditions are still poor. No change all through the week. We see a blip on Thursday morning, 27 August, with a tiny windswell – 2ft from the W at 8 seconds – and winds go light onshore. Still poor.
Friday 28 August and Saturday 29 August see the combined energy rise into the strong range – 203 up to 344 – but the swell stays small, 1ft to 2ft, and the onshore winds never let up. It’s all poor quality, with clean lines missing. Even the long-period groundswell in the second week – up to 19 seconds – doesn’t save it. The swell is just too small and the wind’s always on it.
On Thursday morning, 3 September, we get a “marginal” call. The swell is only 1ft from the SSW, but the period jumps to 19 seconds and the energy hits 341. Wind is light offshore from the WSW at 6 mph. That might be the best chance you get – a glassy morning with a long period groundswell. But it’s small, and at Hobson County Park, a reef break, those long-period swells can make for nice lines. Still, I wouldn’t call it a standout – it’s just the best of a bad lot.
The end of the forecast on 7 September Monday afternoon drops to 0.3ft with a 24-second period and 41 energy. That’s barely a ripple.
If you’re desperate, maybe keep an eye on that Thursday morning 3 September. The offshore wind and groundswell energy is there, but the size is not. For the rest of it – I’d leave the board at home.
Rusty.
