The Lowdown
G’day crew, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Hobson County Park.
To be honest – and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next couple of weeks look pretty grim for a paddle. That first mention of anything rideable doesn’t come until Friday the 28th of August, and even then it’s described as “marginal.” The week ahead is a write-off with tiny swell, poor conditions, and not a single wave worth paddling for. The 16-day window is full of gaps; you’re looking at basically a full week (20th to 27th August) of nothing but poor surf and a score of zero. After that, we get a few marginal days, but nothing that screams quality.
The only real standout comes much later – on Thursday morning the 3rd of September. The swell direction is WNW, right in the sweet spot for this reef break, and it’s showing about 3 ft. The wind is glassy – dead still, with that “slight air” feel. That’s a massive positive. The wave energy is moderate at 273 (combined energy), and while the period is 10 seconds, it’s lined up from a good direction. This is your one clear window. The water temp is sitting at 69°F, which is a full 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year – very unusual, so a spring wetsuit or just a rashie might be all you need. The swell only just tips over 5 ft in the afternoon when it jumps to about 5 ft, but that’s short-period (6 seconds) and paired with a light onshore breeze, so stick to that glassy morning session. This spot is consistent and fairly exposed, but it’s an advanced break, so it’ll be hollow and powerful, especially on that WNW swell. Crowds are “sometimes” a thing here, so you might have a few locals out but nothing crazy.
Beyond that, Friday the 4th of September morning has about 3 ft from the west at 10 seconds, with light onshore wind and moderate energy (341). It’s still only marginal, so not a standout, but if you miss Thursday, it’s your next best shot in a very quiet period.
For the rest of the window – lots of small, weak, poor surf. The energy stays low for days, with many readings under 100. Honestly, if you’re looking for a wave this fortnight, your one real bet is that glassy Thursday morning on the 3rd of September. Make the most of it.
Rusty.
