The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Hobson County Park.
Honestly, I’ve gotta level with you – this stretch looks like a real struggle. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with no proper surf on offer. The first solid recommendation doesn’t pop up until Friday the 28th of August, and even then it’s only a marginal call. So we’ve got a big gap of flat or pretty poor conditions right from the start. The water is sitting at 69°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least a dip won’t be a shock to the system.
The wind is mostly light and from the WSW, keeping things clean, but there just isn’t any push. The first couple of days are tiny, with swell around 1ft from the SSW. That long period of 13 seconds is a tease – it’s proper groundswell potential, but the energy is weak, with combined energy values stuck below 100 (55). It’s just not enough to get the reef at Hobson County Park working.
We get a slight bump Saturday the 23rd afternoon with the combined energy climbing to 146, but it’s still a paltry 1ft. The same goes for the start of the week – Monday the 24th morning shows 1ft and 155 energy, but it’s still poor surf. Tuesday the 25th afternoon sees a brief spike to 4ft, but it’s a short period 6 second wind swell from the W, and the quality is just not there. It’s labelled as poor surf conditions.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is Friday the 28th of August morning. The combined energy jumps to 365, and the swell holds a 19 second period from the SSW. That’s a very long period groundswell, which is rare. But here’s the catch – the height is only 1ft. That long period will make it super straight and walled up at a beach or reef, but for a reef break like Hobson, it could offer a few proper lines if the tide lines up. The wind is light and offshore, so it’ll be glassy. But it’s a marginal call, and the crowds are sometimes around, so you might have some company. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but keep your expectations low.
Saturday the 29th morning is similar with 2ft and 320 energy, 17 second period, and clean offshore SW wind. Again, very marginal but probably the second best window.
The rest of the run into the first week of September is more of the same – small, weak, and mostly poor. The second week looks even more patchy, with a few spikes in energy but still no real size or quality. For a spot that’s consistent, this is a rough patch. It’s more of a swimming and sunbaking kind of forecast.
Stay patient, the ocean changes.
Rusty.
