Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you, this 16-day run at Hobson County Park is a tough one for surfers. This is a reef break for advanced crew, but honestly, there’s nothing worth paddling out for in the first week. The energy is weak, under 300 in the combined swell energy bracket. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year – so at least you won’t be freezing waiting for a wave.
We kick off Monday 6th July with tiny 1 ft swell from the SSW, period is a long 16 seconds, but the wind is onshore and the call is ‘poor surf conditions.’ That sums up the next several days. Tuesday to Thursday the swell bumps up to 2 ft, but the wind stays onshore, and the combined energy hits a peak of 361 – still moderate, but the quality is just not there. Nobody’s getting excited about that.
Friday 10th through to Sunday 12th, the swell drops back to 1 ft to 2 ft, with cross-onshore winds and small wind ripples. The period drops from 16 to 14 seconds, energy fades to around 118 to 178, and the wave comment stays ‘poor surf conditions.’ It’s a blank run of flat, messy days.
Then we get a tiny glimpse of hope on Monday 13th July. The morning turns glassy – wind is 5 km/h from the SW, swell is still only 2 ft, but for a moment the water is clean. The call upgrades to ‘surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.’ Even so, at this size and with a 13-second period, it’s barely rideable. The afternoon goes back onshore.
The next standout is Wednesday 15th July afternoon. Another glassy patch with the wind dropping to 5 km/h from the SW, swell a mere 1.0 ft from the SW with a 16-second period. Combined energy is 76 – weak. The wave comment is again ‘surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.’ It’s a fleeting moment of clean water on a tiny dribble.
From Thursday 16th July onward, it’s more of the same: 1.0 ft to 2 ft swell, all onshore or cross-onshore winds, poor quality. The period does get long – up to 18 seconds from the SW and W – but that long-period groundswell on a reef can be tricky, and without any real swell height, it’s not doing anything. Energy values struggle to break 150.
To be honest, the only real window to even think about wetting a line is the mornings of Monday 13th and Wednesday 15th July when the wind goes glassy. But the waves are tiny and weak. If you’re an expert wanting to scratch around on a longboard, maybe. Otherwise, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer on a windy day than a paddle surfer. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, it’s a lean run.
